Eshop - Prevent Duplicate Product Titles... A Strategy
-
Hi Mozzers !
I'm running a small online vintage bag and jewellery store (www.vintageheirloom.com). Items are unique and need to be written up individually. Whilst the details condition, age etc are unique many of the items name's aren't.
For instance, we have over a year had several bags that we've named: Vintage Celine classic box bag
Naturally Moz has pulled up these as duplicates, same product title.
I could append a unique database id number at the end of each title but it looks strange for the customer.
I could add a few details like condition, age & price e.g. Vintage Celine classic box bag - B+ 80s 90s £425 but I don't think this would be entirely unique either.
Has anyone a good strategy for creating unique product titles that looks ok and informative to the customer?
Thanks for looking.
Kevin

Hi CleverPHD,
Many thanks for your considered response. I'll definitely add the unique product id at the end, it'll prevent dups as you say. Also I agree a bit more detail in the product title will help with long tail searches.
I'm working on a new site (Wordpress), and will also consider more product categories so again thanks for reminding me :-).
Hope your business is going well.
Thanks

I think you are on the right track. You just need to be more descriptive in your Title tags (and meta descriptions). If the page ranks, then a better description in the Title will help the user know what to click on and potentially can increase your CTR. I went to your website and on the Celine Bags page http://www.vintageheirloom.com/vintage-celine/bags you do list things on a bag like the pattern or year or color, etc. Those are things that can help make the title tags unique, just keep on expanding on those ideas.
You may want to consider this. As Google only shows 70 characters, setup your title tag so that it is descriptive but then just to make sure that the title is unique add something like Item #74747 at the very end and use the item id from your system. This can also help the user if they are emailing or calling you to have the item number and eliminate any confusion about what product they are asking about, plus it will always make the title tag unique. Also, if it is after 70 characters, then it will (generally) not show in the SERPs. We have used this in the same way in the meta descriptions to make them unique as well. I help run a site with over 5,000 items that we have used this approach with much success in keeping our titles and descriptions helpful and unique! It looks like you are doing this with the URL already so would not be a big step to put into the other slots.
Just to be clear, I would make the title tag more descriptive to help make it more unique, but then just as a fail safe add the ID number on at the end. It seems that you do not have a huge inventory of these bags and so expanded details on the product in the title tags may be enough - you will have to experiment.
Something else to consider, but it looks like you do not have enough inventory to justify it, if you had a ton of "box bags" I would potentially set that up as a cat or subcat. This way you have a page that will be dedicated to that KW to help with ranking. The transitory nature of your products will make it hard to have a product page that will rank as it seems they are changing. Just something else to consider.
Cheers!

Product URL
Hey Mozzers, Nice quick and simple one for you. Which of these 2 options is better for SEO and userbility and why domain.co.uk/productname.html
On-Page Optimization | | ATP
domain.co.uk/shop/category/product.html The top one stops stops any funky problems with magento making 2 paths to the same product but the second option feels more natural and helpful to the user. I feel both a valid but I would like some opinions please0 -
Page title contents
In my page title, I have my product name. Is it beneficial to also include another keyword like: Buy wedding dress online Australia: e..g. (page title) amelie wedding dress | buy wedding dress online Australia. Or is it better just using: Amelie wedding dress

Duplicate page titles and Content in Woocommerce
Hi Guys, I'm new to Moz and really liking it so far!
On-Page Optimization | | jeeyer
I run a eCommerce site on Wordpress + WooCommerce and ofcourse use Yoast for SEO optimalisation I've got a question about my first Crawl report which showed over 600 issues! 😐 I've read that this is something that happens more often (http://moz.com/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success). Most of them are categorized under:
1. Duplicate Page Titles or;
2. Duplicate Page Content. Duplicate Page Titles:
These are almost only: product category pages and product tags. Is this problem beeing solved by giving them the right SEO SERP? I see that a lot of categories don't have a proper SEO SERP set up in yoast! Do I need to add this to clear this issue, or do I need to change the actual Title? And how about the Product tags? Another point (bit more off-topic) I've read here: http://moz.com/community/q/yoast-seo-plugin-to-index-or-not-to-index-categories that it's advised to noindex/follow Categories and Tags but isn't that a wierd idea to do for a eCommerce site?! Duplicate Page Content:
Same goes here almost only Product Categories and product tags that are displayed as duplicate Page content! When I check the results I can click on a blue button for example "+ 17 duplicates" and that shows me (in this case 17 URLS) but they are not related to the fist in any way so not sure where to start here? Thanks for taking the time to help out!

Duplicate page content
Hi Crawl errors is showing 2 pages of duplicate content for my clients WordPress site: /news/ & /category/featured/ Yoast is installed so how best to resolve this ? i see that both pages are canonicalised to themselves so presume just need to change the canonical tag on /category/featured/ to reference /news/ ?(since news is the page with higher authority and the main page for showing this info) or is there other way in Yoast or WP to deal with this & prevent from happening again ? Cheers Dan

Duplicate Content?
Hi All, I have a new client site, a static site with navigation across the top, and down the left side. Two of the menus from the top navigation are replicated in the navigation structure on the left hand side. They have the exact same url structure, they are in fact the same exact page, listed on the site in two areas. My question is - is this a case of duplicate content, or, as they urls are the exact same, will they be seen as a single page? A canonical tag on one would be replicated on the other by the CMS - so do I leave it, or try to get them to re-structure removing one of the links? (I doubt they will do this as its a brand new site they just has developed). Many thanks!

Mass Duplicate Content
Hi guys Now that the full crawl is complete I've found the following: http://www.trespass.co.uk/mens-onslow-02022 http://www.trespass.co.uk/mens-moora-01816 http://www.trespass.co.uk/site/writeReview?ProductID=1816 http://www.trespass.co.uk/site/writeReview?ProductID=2022 The first 2 duplicate content is easily fixed by writing better product descriptions for each product (a lot of hours needed) but still an easy fix. The last 2 are review pages for each product which are all the same except for the main h1 text. My thinking is to add no index and no follow to all of these review pages? The site will be changing to magento very soon and theres still a lot of work to do. If anyone has any other suggestions or can spot any other issues, its appreciated. Kind regards Robert
