What should I track to see if my GAW choices are good?
-
I was asked today what 3 Google Ad Words measurements I would track to determine of the key words and key phrases chosen for an Ad Words Campaign were working.
What would YOU measure?
Thank you!
-
The three numbers would be:
- Conversion value - whether this be the value passed from eCommerce tracking or assigned values for completed actions that have been nominated. Without tracking a value or assigning any value it becomes difficult to effectively measure performance at a keyword level. Every account must have measures of success.
- Conv. value / cost - are you receiving more than what you are paying per click. Once you assign a value for margin you should be able to adjust CPC easily based on the return you are getting back
- CTR - what % of the market are you winning, once your keywords have passed the profitability test the main goal should be to increase CTR and subsequently improve quality score which will decrease CPC's.
Following these rules should ensure most profitable keywords are focused on to increase ROI and campaign performance.

Context is important to answer this fully as there are plenty of variables to change the answer, but here is what I'd say:
- Conversions — are they keywords driving conversions or simply spending money?
- Cost per Conversion — one keyword may drive a lot of conversions, but at a very high price while other keywords drive smaller volume at lower cost. Perhaps the mass of smaller, cheaper keywords are more valuable than the large volume expensive keyword. If that's the case, consider pausing the expensive one. This ties conversion rate into the mix because these lower cost keyword are going to likely have a higher conversion rate.
- CTR — Is that keyword relevant to actual search queries? If not, it's probably not doing anything for you except spending money and you should probably kill it. If the CTR is high, but you're not seeing conversions, look into GA and your landing page/s to find out why.
I don't say CPC here because that is subjective and fluid. There may keyword with incredibly high CPCs, but they are valuable in conversions. If you see return, to some extent, CPCs don't matter. If you can lower CPCs without negatively impacting conversion volume or rate, then you're good to go.

Hi Patricia,
I would agree with the suggestions above. One point to note however is that the conversions should be tracked all the way to a sale not just the first point of conversion. For example, if you're dealing with a franchisor, the first conversion point can be a lead filled out via a landing page. The 2nd conversion point is that lead actually ending up buying a franchise. A lot of companies make the mistake of not tracking the 2nd conversion point and this leads to misallocation of funds. You might have a keyword generating lots of leads at a very effective CPL however not leading to real conversions (sales). On the other hand, you may have a keyword converting at a relatively expensive CPL however leads to real conversions (sales).
Cheers,
SEO5..

Number of impressions, number of clicks, cost per click, number of conversions, conversion values.
You can use to see what are your best converting keywords that make you the most money. You may have a kw with less clicks bringing in more money than a kw with more clicks.

Adwords Conversions - Trying to track button clicks that fire when Bootstrap modal contact form clicked/opened
Hi there, I'm trying to implement google adwords conversions on a particular client's website. They have used bootstrap as the framework for their site and mainly open up contact forms within a bootstrap modal, after a button is clicked. See here: http://www.gtwstorage.co.uk/ I thought I had successfully implemented the adwords conversion tracking however it has been a week now, and my conversions still say they are "unverified". I wonder if anyone else has encountered this before and knows what I might be doing wrong. Thank you in advance, Darren

How to find a good PPC firm
Hi guys, I'm completely new to PPC. I want to hire a firm to help drive PPC traffic to credit card landing pages. Our starting budget is limited ($2,000/month for everything) but can grow to about $5,000 if we see results. My questions are: Where can I find a list of good PPC firms that fits my vertical (credit cards) and budget? What are the key questions I should ask a PPC firm before I hire them? Is there a "Beginner's Guide to PPC" type of whitepaper, ebook, article, or course I can take to educate myself? Thanks in advance!

How Do I Track AdCenter Keyword Data in Google Analytics?
Like everyone else, I am looking for new ways to gather as much keyword data as I can in the wake of the dreaded (not provided) epidemic. This question focuses on keyword data from Paid Search. We all know this is very simple with AdWords because the data is right there in Google Analytics. MSN adCenter, however, is a different story as these parameters need to be added to the end of each destination URL. Here are the parameters I'm using: utm_source=Bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_term={QueryString}&utm_content={AdID}&utm_campaign=Leads Everything is working well with the exception of {QueryString} which is returning nothing. I would really like to solve this issue because I do not have the time to add specific parameters for each keyword in all of my campaigns. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Good Adwords resources/ Guides
I'm going to be taking over the PPC for my company. A 3rd party currently does it but I have done a review and they have not been doing a great job ( I spotted a few very basic mistakes), so we want to switch it to in house I have experience with PPC, and I'm confident on the basic of it, but I was looking for a good (recent) PPC resource or guide so I can make sure I'm doing it right, basicly a ppcmoz 😉 For example current the campaigns are set to accelerated, but I have been told that is very wasteful, but the 3rd party explanation is:"We set the campaigns to be accelerated to avoid missing out on potential sales. These can be set to standard if you wish however there is a higher chance that sales could be missed." Which is correct?

Social Media black hat methods - can google see this?
My site was hit by a Penguin or Panda, for some bad linking in 2012. Ever since then I have been 100% completely white hat, being careful who I pick to my marketing. Once burnt.... Recently, with all the hype of social media being the thing to help you boast rankings, it got me wondering about how Google really can monitor this. I saw this the other day on Elance... I need 5000 Facebook fans. They must be real looking and be coming from US IPs, Preferable real looking US accounts. If people are just going to get false Facebook fans, tweets etc.... then it is no better than all the bad linking. Perhaps Google will come out with Puma penalty (well we have pandas and penguins)

FB PPC Conversion Tracking Script
Hi guys, Is there any way to install a FB conversion script for their PPC (in the same way as the shopping directories use)? I know this was possible about 1.5-2 years ago via a feature they have released in Beta at that time, but this seem to no longer be a choice. There is nothing in the FB help, I found no such option in their settings and the FB support does not answer (what;s new here 🙂 ) We can always try alternatives - as Google Analytics or Prosper202 ... but this time we would prefer FB scripts if possible. Thanks in advance T

Is there any correlation between the on-page factors being complete in moz and having a good quality score in Adwords?
I've been optimizing the website for a few keywords we're targeting and I'm looking to improve the quality score for my Adwords landing pages. My on-page scoring is great, but my scores in Adwords are low. Ideas?
