International SEO and Server Hosting
-
I am quite new to international SEO. I have a customer who wants to use the same website content on various domains targeting different countries. Such as;
xxxx.hk - same content targeting Hong Kong
xxxx.co.uk - same content targeting UK
xxxx.de - same content targeting Germany
I found that it could be possible with the Google suggested hreflang without any duplicate content problem. Is that true? Could someone explain this for me.
Another question; if above is true do we need to make other adjustments as well. Such as;
-
Any adjustments in Google Webmaster Tools (for each domain)
-
Server location, does that really make a difference? Can we host each of the domains on the same server or should we seperate them and host each one on the country it is targeting ?
Thanks in advance!

Hi Lynn,
Thank you so much for the detailed explanation and reference links. Much appreciated

Hi Mert,
Hreflang is the way to go to avoid duplicate content issues. Check out this post for a good rundown on international setup considerations and this post for a recent guide to hreflang generation (and it has a tool to help you create the needed tags!).
In regards the other things, yes you should declare in GWT which domain is aimed at which region (although the tld ,hk, .de etc is declaring this pretty obviously anyway) and as for the server location for me this is not so important if it creates too much overhead in terms of multiple hosting packages etc. The server location issue can also be influenced by such things as how fast your site loads in the different areas (if it is slow, maybe a local server or a cdn setup is in order) but in terms of how google views your sites for geo specific searches, the top level domain and hreflang implementation are more important than server location for me.

Standalone Hosting Plan vs Multisite Hosting Plan for SEO?
I am looking to migrate my current site to Siteground so I was having a chat with the operator who is telling me that if I was to sign up a new hosting plan I would get additional SEO benefits.. can anyone confirm or deny this? Also while on the question, do certain domain/hosting providers offer better SEO/SERP rankings and if they do can anyone recommend any in Australia in Particular? The domain is a .com.au website Transcript: me: i have a website that is registered at crazydomains and Wordpress files hosted on my friends server... what would I need to do to have the domain/hosting transfered to SG?

Siteground Operator:.: Let me take a look at the website and I will provide you with a solution 🙂
me: thx
Siteground Operator:.: In this case you have two choices, you can either host it on your current plan or create a new one just for it
Siteground Operator:.: Getting a new plan will be a better choice in terms of SEO and performance
Siteground Operator:.: But you can run it on your current GrowBig as well
me: why will taht give it better SEO?
Siteground Operator:.: Because it will have its own cPanel and it will be a primary domain for it, instead of having it setup as an addon
me: How does Google know what the primary or secondary domain on my hosting plan?
Siteground Operator:.: It doest, as your file location will be primarydomain.com/addonslot
Siteground Operator:.: Compared to primarydomain.com if you put it in its own hosting plan
me: So im struggling to understand how this affects my SEO?
Siteground Operator:.: SERP is based on a couple of things, one of which is domain authority (DO). This tends to be a lot harder to build up with addon domains compared to domains hosted in their own plans.
Siteground Operator:.: Additionally, you will have 2 sites under a single IP address which is not the optimal solution you want to get
me: What would need to be done as far as transfering the WP installation/files/databse etc
Siteground Operator:.: As its stored on a local host you will have to upload a backup copy of your files and db on our server and we will configure it for you.

SEO before Replatforming - Good Idea?
Hello, We are in the midst of a major replatforming of our current website, the process will take roughly six to nine more months to complete. We are completing revamping our site - the new site will be on the same domain, but almost everything is changing - from the category structure, hierarchy, architecture, different regions on separate URLs will not be on the same with a currency converter, URLs - you name it, we're changing it. There has been internal discussions for some time on whether we should hire an outside firm to help us with our SEO. I have a lot of experience in SEO but my role has changed recently and we have had trouble filling my previous role. We are not looking for help with the replatforming project, we have a great plan in place to preserve link equity, tags, etc. We are looking for general SEO help as if replatforming wasn't on the table. My question is, is this smart to do before replatforming? In my opinion, it's not. Our new site will have completely different URLs and will be so dramatically different. We could have someone do some keyword research, but we have already done the bulk of it. We have thought about and researched keywords for every new page we are creating. But from a technical SEO perspective, I don't see the point in getting someone. In addition, we just had a major SEO audit done last year and we completed the tasks from that audit on the current site; however, most of the changes were technical, not content based. Thoughts?

Frames and SEO
In the old days frames were a problem because they could end up being orphaned pages that get indexed and appear in the SERPS but had to navigation so they were useless. Are frames still a problem with Google and if so what are the suggested solutions?

SEO Company that bills on results?
After having bad experiences with a few seo and ppc companies, I would like to find a company that operates on the premise that they should get paid for producing results instead just for signing a contract. I'm not thinking that any payment is contingent results but that a large portion of the billing is. I also know that it can take several months to get to an seo goal so I'm not taking a "you have one month to fix our site or we don't pay" approach. Is there a company out there that has enough confidence in their white-hat processes that they actually back their services with some sort of guarantee?

Mobile SEO
Hey, In the following article, Google recommended using a 301 redirect but doesn't specify why. http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.co.uk/2011/02/making-websites-mobile-friendly.html I assume this is to pass over link equity to the relevant mobile/desktop variation. Can anyone confirm this? Also is there any other reason? Again assuming this would keep the correct URLs in the correct index? Anything else anyone can chip in would be great. Thanks
