How does the Google Treat 301 Redirects?
-
Hi,
My website was one of many that dropped in rankings this last Friday, The company that i outsourced my SEO 4 months ago did a bad job. Now i'm doing everything my self to recover, so i was thinking getting a new hosting, duplicate the website with a same content (i have original quality content) and 301 my old domain to new one? How long can it last with Google? Can penalties be passed via 301 redirects ?
Looking forward to your help.

You need to think about whether your site has been hit with a manual penalty or an algorithm penalty. If you have had no messages in WMT then it is probably an algorithm penalty. Panda is now part of all algorithm changes so you may have been hit by that.
One of our testing sites got hit by Penguin in May and we decided to test out if a 301 to a new website would work...it didnt!! It took just over 5 weeks for Google to catch up and the site lost all its rankings again. I was actually surprised it took that long to be honest, Google's algorithm is too smart for that so I would advise trying to fix any problems before you give up and start a new website.
Penalties will last as long as you have the problem. The issue here is, if it is an algorithm change then it is harder to figure out what is wrong. Whilst a manual penalty is worse, at least you know what to do in order to fix the problem. You need to look at any duplicate content issues you may have and if that is all ok then look deep into your backlink profile because it must be 1 or the other. If you show us your URL then maybe one of us could take a quick look and give you some more info.

Hi,
Everything Sharia says is correct in terms of being sure you know what you are dealing with. Assuming that your drop in rankings/traffic is related to the reported penguin update last weekend and again assuming that the bad job your seo firm did was related to building loads of crappy links to your site then I would suggest taking a deep breath and start looking for more information on penguin/penguin recovery. There is lots of info on this on the qa and the blogs, for example:
http://moz.com/blog/the-difference-between-penguin-and-an-unnatural-links-penalty-and-some-info-on-panda-too
http://moz.com/ugc/what-a-penguin-recovery-looks-likeA short answer to your question is that there seem to be mixed thoughts on using 301s to try and 'get out' of a penguin related drop in rankings. Personally I think the balance of opinion points towards 301s being either a very short term tactic or else just passing the problem on to the new page/domain. So I would not jump into the 301 to a new domain route without thinking things through (a lot!). A couple more relevant posts:

Do you have more information about what went wrong? I think the first step would be an in depth analysis to try and discover why your ratings went down. Did they just fall for the first time last Friday; did you get any penalty notifications; was it four months ago they started falling? Why do you say your SEO company did a bad job - how?
There are many reasons a site can fall in the SERPs, and they aren't all penalty related. And, it is possible to recover from some penalties. I've seen sites fall after algorithm changes even when a site has been doing everything correctly. Sometimes volatility is temporary. Google Local hit a couple of our clients pretty hard just because they no longer ranked across the county, a big disappointment since we'd successfully put a lot of quality work into getting them to the top.
Anyway, if you give more information, it will be easier for the heads here to give you good answers.

Is this thumbtack.com pop-up modal allowed by Google?
When you click on a Thumbtack organic result, there's a pop-up modal on the landing page. Is this allowed by Google? E.g. Go to these SERPS and click on the first Thumbtack result. The landing page has this modal appear. Is this likely to hurt their rankings?

Black hat : raising CTR to have better rank in Google
We all know that Google uses click-through-rate (CTR) as one of it is ranking factor. I came up with an idea in my mind. I would like to see if someone saw this idea before or tried it. If you search in Google for the term "SEO" for example. You will see the moz.com website in rank 3. And if you checked the source code you will see that result 3 is linking to this url: https://www.google.com.sa/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=3&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CDMQFjAC&url=https%3A%2F%2Fmoz.com%2Fbeginners-guide-to-seo&ei=F-pPVaDZBoSp7Abo_IDYAg&usg=AFQjCNEwiTCgNNNWInUJNibqiJCnlqcYtw That url will redirect you to seomoz.com Ok, what if we use linkbucks.com or any other cheap targeted traffic network and have a campaign that sends traffic to the url that I show you. Will that count as traffic from Google so it will increase the CTR from Google?

Should I redirect old pages
I have taken over SEO on a site. The old people built thousands of pages with duplicate content. I am converting site to wordpress and was wondering if I should take the time to 301 redirect all 10,000 or so pages with duplicate content. The 10,000 pages all have links back to different to different pages as well as to the homepage. Should I just let them go to a 404 page not found.

Google Penguin for non-English queries?
Does anybody know if non-English queries were also 'hit' by the Google Penguin update? All Penguin horror stories out there are from sites focusing on English queries, and in some (Dutch) industries I'm monitoring, some sites with spammy backlink profiles are still ranking.

Using Redirects To Avoid Penalties
A quick question, born out of frustration! If a webpage has been penalised for unnatural links, what would be the effects of moving that page to a new URL and setting up a 301 redirect from the old penalised page to the new page? Will Google treat the new page as ‘non-penalised’ and restore your rankings? It really shouldn’t work, but I’m convinced (although not certain) that our clients competitor has done this, with great effect! I suppose you could also achieve this using canonicalisation too! Many thanks in advance, Lee.

Google Penguin w/ Meta Keywords
It's getting really hard filtering through the Penguin articles flying around right now so excuse me if this has been addressed: I know that Google no longer uses the meta keywords as indicators (VERY old news). But I'm just wondering if they are starting to look at them as a bigger spam indicator since Penguin is looking at over-optimization. If yes, has anyone read good article indicating so? The reason I ask is because I have two websites, one is authoritative and the other… not so much. Recently my authoritative website has taken a dip in rankings, a significant dip. The non-authoritative one has increased in rankings… by a lot. Now, the authoritative website pages that use meta-keywords seem to be the ones that are having issues… so it really has me wondering. Both websites compete with each other and are fairly similar in their offerings. I should also mention that the meta-keywords were implemented a long time ago… before I took over the account. Also important to note, I never purchase links and never practice any spammy techniques. I am as white hat as it gets which has me really puzzled as to why one site dropped drastically.

Opportunity for Redirect?
Hi there! I've got a site selling outdoor jackets and remembered about a friend's old business website (that also sold outdoor jackets) which is now dormant. He's kindly agreed to let me host a splash page on his old domain, or to use the domain to redirect. I wasn't sure if Google looked negatively at redirects, so I suggested the page host option? What do you think? I guess what it would mean is for us to supply our name server details to him, and then ask him to put these into his DNS settings. If we were to host a page in this way, would we add a page of relevant content, a simple link? Would this pull the link juice through? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Matt

Has anyone seen this kind of google cache spam before?
Has anyone seen this kind of 'hack'? When looking at a site recently I found the Google cache version (from 28 Oct) strewn with mentions of all sorts of dodgy looking pharma products but the site itself looked fine. The site itself is www.istc.org.uk Looking in the source of the pages you can see the home pages contains: Browsing as googlebot showed me an empty page (though msnbot etc. returned a 'normal' non-pharma page). As a mildly amusing aside - when I tried to tell the istc about this, the person answering the phone clearly didn't believe me and couldn't get me off the line fast enough! Needless to say they haven't fixed it a week after being told.
