SEO structure question: Better to add similar (but distinct) content to multiple unique pages or make one unique page?
-
Not sure which approach would be more SEO ranking friendly?
As we are a music store, we do instrument repairs on all instruments. Currently, I don't have much of any content about our repairs on our website... so I'm considering a couple different approaches of adding this content: Let's take Trumpet Repair for example:
1. I can auto write to the HTML body (say, at the end of the body) of our 20 Trumpets (each having their own page) we have for sale on our site, the verbiage of all repairs, services, rates, and other repair related detail. In my mind, the effect of this may be that: This added information does uniquely pertain to Trumpets only (excludes all other instrument repair info), which Google likes... but it would be duplicate Trumpet repair information over 20 pages.... which Google may not like?
2. Or I could auto write the repair details to the Trumpet's Category Page - either in the Body, Header, or Footer. This definitely reduces the redundancy of the repeating Trumpet repair info per Trumpet page, but it also reduces each Trumpet pages content depth... so I'm not sure which out weighs the other?
3. Write it to both category page & individual pages? Possibly valuable because the information is anchoring all around itself and supporting... or is that super duplication?
4. Of course, create a category dedicated to repairs then add a subcategory for each instrument and have the repair info there be completely unique to that page...- then in the body of each 20 Trumpets, tag an internal link to Trumpet Repair?
Any suggestions greatly appreciated? Thanks, Kevin

You're most welcome Kevin! I like Kurt's response too and it makes sense. Best of luck and let me know if you ever need anything else or have other questions!

Right on! Thanks Kurt! That would just feel right to do it like that... sometimes gets confusing on what out-weighs what for prioritizing SEO, but I really think you nailed it on the head! Thanks again!

Awesome! Thanks!! Great link too! I think you and Kurt are on the same page here with simplicity and keeping it unique. Thanks again Ashkan!

I'd go with creating a repairs section and having different pages for the various types of instrument repair you offer. I'd recommend this for two reasons.
- By having unique pages for the various types of instrument repair as well as a category page for instrument repair, you are able to target keywords specific to instrument repair. You can only effectively target so many keywords on a page, so, having different pages for sales and repairs allows you to target more keywords.
- Users looking at a sales page are probably wanting to buy an instrument, not get an instrument repaired. So, the repairs information is most likely irrelevant for them at the time and will only serve to confuse things during the buying process. I generally think pages need to be kept as simple as possible, regarding content topics. Too many topics and you confuse people and make it harder for them to find what they want. So, keeping each topic to it's own page is usually better for the user experience.

You are asking a great question. My suggestion would be to forget about SEO and write the content in the way that would make sense to you as a professional and also in a way that you really think your end consumer would like. SEO is basically a method for Google to try to figure out what people would like the most and rank those sites that seem like they would be more appealing to the people who are searching for similar terms. So I highly suggest you totally ignore what SEO tactic you should use for your content and focus on how to make your content better for your visitors.
Let me address one technical thing though; what you are asking some refer to as Siloing. Bruce Clay has a well written article about this that you can find: http://www.bruceclay.com/seo/silo.htm . This will help you understand how you should restructure your content in a way that is easiest to understand for both the consumer as well as the search engine. I would probably be able to help you more if I knew what your website's structure looked like but I hope this gives you some general guidelines. Good luck to you!Ashkan Sobhe

Help with structure for optimizing Photography Website SEO
Hey guys , I am building a photography website and currently I have it setup the following way for my image galleries : https://ricfrancophotography.com/portfolio/norway-landscape-photography/#!gallery6618-6577 This provides me with an individual link for each of the images in my photography gallery but as a gallery these have obviously no content and I figured the best way would be to add the images I want to work my SEO for to individual blog posts . So here is what I did so far : - Added a link to the caption of each image inside the lightbox that is linking to the individual blog post - In order to not break the navigation I made the post with the content for each image open in a modal popup (it changes the link in the top bar but once closed it goes back to the gallery) . - I made the image inside the post link back to the fullsize image in the lightbox gallery when clicked instead of linking to the .jpg in wp-content/uploads. Now, I have some questions regarding whether this is a good practice in terms of SEO and if the fact of having duplicate images or this structure is going to hurt my SEO any way . Although both images are in different urls they ultimately link to each other this way : Blog Image --> Gallery Image url --> wp-content/uploads/file.jpg Is there a better approach for this ? Thanks

Content Strategy/Duplicate Content Issue, rel=canonical question
Hi Mozzers: We have a client who regularly pays to have high-quality content produced for their company blog. When I say 'high quality' I mean 1000 - 2000 word posts written to a technical audience by a lawyer. We recently found out that, prior to the content going on their blog, they're shipping it off to two syndication sites, both of which slap rel=canonical on them. By the time the content makes it to the blog, it has probably appeared in two other places. What are some thoughts about how 'awful' a practice this is? Of course, I'm arguing to them that the ranking of the content on their blog is bound to be suffering and that, at least, they should post to their own site first and, if at all, only post to other sites several weeks out. Does anyone have deeper thinking about this?

ANSWER SEEN 'WITHIN THE QUESTION' BRACKET So you ask, why is the sky blue?
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | RedFrog
Well, the answer is not so simple; In the day-time, when it's clear and cloudless,
the sky is blue because molecules in the air scatter blue light from the sun more than they scatter red light.
When we look towards the sun at sunset, we see red and orange colours because the blue light has been scattered out and away from the line of sight. How does having multiple pages on similar topics affect SEO?
Hey everyone, On our site we have multiple pages that have similar content. As an example, we have a section on Cars (in general) and then specific pages for Used Cars, European Cars, Remodeled Cars etc. Much of the content is similar on these page and the only difference is some content and the additional term in the URL (for example car.com/remodeled-cars and /european-cars). In the past few months, we've noticed a dip in our organic ranking and started doing research. Also, we noticed that Google, in SERPs, shows the general page (cars.com/cars) and not the specific page (/european-cars), even if the specific page has more content. Can having multiple pages with similar content hurt SEO? If so, what is the best way to remedy this? We can consolidate some of the pages and make the difference between them a little clearer, but does it make that much of a difference for rankings? Thanks in advance!

Does having a page that ends with ? cause duplicate content?
I am working on a site that has lots of dynamic parameters. So lets say we have www.example.com/page?parameter=1 When the page has no parameters you can still end up at www.example.com/page? Should I redirect this to www.example.com/page/ ? Im not sure if Google ignores this, or if these pages need to be dealt with. Thanks

Deleting Pages in One Fell Swoop
We're about to delete a bunch of unnecessary pages, largely responsible for our duplicate content woes. These are low traffic pages, and they were NEVER a good user experience. I just want to check and make sure I'll be setting up the proper way to account for their absence: 1. Set up 301's for all of them so they point to related pages 2. Remove them from the Sitemap 3. Also remove any internal links that previously pointed at them. Is there anything else I'm missing here? Or any additional moves I can make that I'm not thinking about? Thanks!

My site has multiple H1's, one in the logo image and one as a header. Is there any official stance from the search engines on this?
In doing some research on this issue, I came across this blog post which seems to suggest it certainly will be a trigger to search engines. http://www.seounique.com/blog/multiple-h1-tags-triggers-google-penalty/ Could be a false positive on his specific case, but I was wondering what the community thought. Thanks in advance!
