How to Let Google Know I am a new Site Owner and to Remove or De-value all backlinks?
-
I am looking to buy a new domain for a brand.
Problem is the domain has was registered in 1996 and has around 6k backlinks (according to ahrefs) that I need removed as the old content will have no relevance to my new site.
Should I just disavow all of them? Is there anything "special" I can do to let Google know that it will be new site owner/content and to remove/discount the current links?
-
A three letter, brandable EMD-- Sounds like the kind of thing someone would want to keep and use or sell for a bunch of money. But then when you add the "6K junk links" it sound like the kind of thing someone would just want to sell and hope to get a bunch of money. Playing games with the registrar isn't going to help help you in the matter. Did you try offering them half price? It still may not be worth it.

Hey Thanks for the responses.
The site in question does not have any manual penalty. It just has a bunch of junk links that I need to get rid of before I start building an authority site.
I would like to avoid using this domain name but it is a 3 letter EMD thats brandable.
What if I transferred the domain to a new owner that does not have the whois blocked? Thereby maybe letting google know that there is a new owner. Anyone have experience with this?

I think that it is imposible to know every back link you have to disavow. I had a site that i tried to disavow everything and always keep appearing new links that i did not found.
although if the domain have a manual action, and you want to focus on other words, maybe it won't heart you.

Do you know if there is a manual action against the site? If so, in some cases, you can show Google evidence that you are the new owner and they will lift the action. If they don't lift the action then you have to go through the full process of cleaning up the backlink profile (trying to remove as many bad links as possible and then disavowing the remaining unnatural links) and then filing for reconsideration. This is usually what happens.
If there is no manual action on the site then disavowing the bad links will probably do the trick. The problem is that there are so many unknowns surrounding the disavow tool.
If this is a site that is going to be important to you, and if the domain currently has an unnatural links problem then I wouldn't risk trying to clean it up. I'd probably buy a different domain name.
With all of that being said, are the links to the site actually bad ones? If they are primarily self made, low quality links then everything I said above still applies. If it's just that the links are not relevant to your content then I wouldn't worry about that and I'd just go ahead and create my new site.

You have to watch out for that, Richard. Here is video from Matt Cutts on the issue. Basically, you're putting yourself in deep water by purchasing such a domain. As Matt says, it can be "a little bit difficult" (that's Matt-speak for "next to impossible") to pull the domain out of a penalty because of it's back links. There is often good reason to pass on buying such a domain and you really need to do your homework before you make the decision to buy.

My sites "pages indexed by Google" have gone up more than qten-fold.
Prior to doing a little work cleaning up broken links and keyword stuffing Google only indexed 23/333 pages. I realize it may not be because of the work but now we have around 300/333. My question is is this a big deal? cheers,

Why is Google Webmaster Tools showing 404 Page Not Found Errors for web pages that don't have anything to do with my site?
I am currently working on a small site with approx 50 web pages. In the crawl error section in WMT Google has highlighted over 10,000 page not found errors for pages that have nothing to do with my site. Anyone come across this before?

Redirecting HTTP to HTTPS - How long does it take Google to re-index the site?
hello Moz We know that this year, Moz changed its domain to moz.com from www.seomoz.org
Technical SEO | | joony
however, when you type "site:seomoz.org" you still can find old urls indexed on Google (on page 7 and above) We also changed our site from http://www.example.com to https://www.example.com
And Google is indexing both sites even though we did proper 301 redirection via htaccess. How long would it take Google to refresh the index? We just don't worry about it? Say we redirected our entire site. What is going to happen to those websites that copied and pasted our content? We have already DMCAed their webpages, but making our site https would mean that their website is now more original than our site? Thus, Google assumes that we have copied their site? (Google is very slow on responding to our DMCA complaint) Thank you in advance for your reply.0 -
Google ranking my site abroad, how to stop?
Hi Mozzers, I have a UK based ecommerce site, that sells only to the UK. Over the last month Google has started ranking my site on foreign flavours of Google, so I keep getting traffic coming to my site from Europe, America and the far east that we could never sell to, and as a result bounce is going up and engagement is going down. They are definitely coming to the site from google searches that relate to my product type, but in regions I do not service. Is there a way to stop google doing this? I have the target set to UK in WMT, but is there anything else I can do? I worried about my UK ranking being damaged by an increasing overall bounce rate. Thanks

Site dropped after I removed spammy KW-stuffed section from homepage
An SEO newbie. I took a sabbatical from my site for 10 months for personal reasons & I'm now coming back to it for the first time and facing a number of issues that I'd appreciate some advice on. 1) In the past week, my rankings for my main keywords have suddenly plummeted from ~#7 - #8 to about #25. The only thing I've done in that time is sign up for Google Webmaster Tools and clean up a spammy-looking keyword-stuffed section at the foot of my homepage. (It read: Red keyword | blue keyword | green keyword | yellow keyword ... 20 times). I've kept the links (to internal pages of my site) but removed keywords. I've no social presence whatsoever. No Twitter, Facebook, Digg, G+, Google Places, nothing -- but I can't imagine this is behind the sudden drop. 2) Last year my rankings start to fall in late April. But for the first two months or so the drop was only from #1 to #2 - #3. I put it down to Penguin as my backlink profile is not ideal. About 5 years ago some SEO got me a mass of sitewide blog footer links with exact-match anchors -- some of which still remain. (Some domains have 750-plus links pointing back to my site). I've a sitewide banner (2,500 pages) on a site with a related theme to mine. I've loads of links from article directory sites (from when I knew no better). * Question: In Google Webmaster Tools I have not (yet?) received an unnatural links warning. Should I still clean up the links with the Link Disavow tool?

Site not ranking in Google but comes up #1 in Yahoo and Bing
Hi everyone, I've been working on SEO for this site for about 2 years and for some reason the site has just tanked in google. However it shows up #1 in yahoo and bing for the same search. http://www.nfsmn.com Phrase: "commercial foundation repair mn" If anyone can shed some light on the issue I would really appreciate it. They do have a sister-site: american-waterworks.com that may be causing issues as they link a lot of content to amww but not the other way around. Thanks Eric

Should a 301 from a penalised domain to a new domain be removed?
A business traded on a domain let's say example.COM which was heavily penalised due to non-removable spammy back links. Their previous SEO advised them to set up on example.CO.UK but redirected example.COM to example.CO.UK. Example.CO.UK ranks very poorly, presumably due to being 'tarred with the same brush' i.e. attributed with the ills of example.COM. Will it do any good to remove the redirect or is example.CO.UK now doomed as well?

Best way to redirect 3 sites to 1 new one.
Hi All We currently have 3 old sites that have tones of content. Due to brand/business consolidation we have merge all 3 to produce 1 website. The new site contains all the old content from the old 3. So, I know I need to 301 redirect all the old content from the previous sites to the equivelent content on the new sites but am confused how you do this with 3 domains? One of the domains is being replaced with the new site. So I have: www.domain1.co.uk www.domain2.co.uk www.domain3.co.uk All the content for all the sites have been imported into a new site and any duplicate content issues havce been resolved. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks
