Building a new website post penalty and redirects
-
A website I'm working on is clearly algorithmically penalised.
I've spent a lot of time mass disavowing spammy links, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
We have been planning to build a new website anyway since we are rebranding.
1. Is it possible to tell which pages are most likely to have a penalty applied?
2. If the website as a whole has a penalty, will redirecting certain pages to the new website carry the penalty?
3. Our website is structured as sales pages and blog content. It is the sales pages that have the spammy links, yet most of the blog content does not rank either. Would it be a good strategy to only redirect all the blog posts (which have natural links pointing to them) to the new website and not the sales pages?
4. The homepage has a mix of spam and very good editorial links. If I have disavowed links and domains, can I safely redirect this page?

Daniel - No worries…
If there hasn't been a manual action (just a big drop in rankings), disavow is a great tool to use.
I think on the darker side of SEO, there has certainly been competitors in highly competitive spaces who have tried to create spammy links pointing to competitors as a means to win at this often zero-sum game. So my hunch is that is why Google realizes that sometimes links show up beyond your control.
Best practice, though, is to contact the other website and ask for links to be removed. But sometimes this can fall on deaf ears… Thus, Google's disavow tool…
If it was my site, I'd try to get some of the bad links removed.
And then really focus on a high-quality end user experience… including site load time, engaging content, etc...
Hope this helps guide the decision…

Hi Jeff, thanks for your response.
There has been no manual action, just an algorithmic penalty evidenced by the fact that posts do not rank for ab almost exact match for the name and sales pages that used to be page 1 arent in the top 50.
I have literally disavowed any link that is not an organic link or a link from a partner website.
Is disavowing (for a anlgo penalty) enough, or do we need to contact websites and have the link removed?

Have you had a manual action taken against the site? The place to look for this is in Google Webmaster Tools, and this describes it in more detail: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/35843?hl=en
If you have, you'll want to clean up everything and ask Google to reconsider the site. This process can take weeks.
Google can either take action against your entire site, or just parts of it, according to their blog here:
http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2013/08/manual-actions-viewer.html
You might just want to start over, though, and do things with a clean slate.
Because repeat offenders, according to Google's Distinguished Engineer Matt Cutts, will face ever more challenging hurdles if additional manual actions occur.
If you haven't had a manual action against your site, you might want to do as much cleanup as possible, and monitor the performance. Try focusing on the end customer experience. What do they need to know? What enriches their lives? (Instead of what's great for the company's revenue.)
To answer the question about redirecting the blog posts - yes, that probably makes sense to do using 301 redirects, especially if that content is solid and has great inbound natural links.
Hope this helps!

Redirecting Canonical Hostnames
Hi, I want to rewrite all the url pages of "site.com" to "www.site.com". I read the moz redirection article and i concluded that this would be the best approach. RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www.seomoz.org [NC]
Technical SEO | | bigrat95
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.seomoz.org/$1 [L,R=301]. But i recieved this error: Internal Server Error The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator, webmaster@localhost and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error. More information about this error may be available in the server error log. I tried this rewrite too... RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www. [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [L,R=301] It worked but it just rewriting my domain** "site.com"** and not all the subs "site.com/fr/example.php" to "www.site.com" Why it doesn't work properly, it seem to be easy... Could it be a hosting problem? Is there another way to do it? <address> </address> <address> </address> <address> </address> <address> </address>0 -

Website not ranking but the blog is!
I am hoping someone might be able to help me, I am doing some work on a website. A new version of the site was recently launched and since then rankings have plummeted and the new blog pages are ranking better! When the new version of the site went live, the domain changed to the non-www version, plus an incorrect robots.txt file and we have never really been able to fully recover (both of these things were beyond my control!). The robots.txt file was corrected and some of the external links links changed to the non-www but there is a 301 redirect in place so changing to the non-www shouldn't have been the reason to drop the site out completely. Before the launch of the new website, the site was ranking on the front page of Google for a lot of relevant keywords such as outdoor blinds, outdoor blinds Perth, cafe blinds, patio blinds, etc. The quality of the links is pretty bad and I am attempting to remove them before doing a disavow of all the really bad quality links but unless we were really unlucky I don't think it's the links right now that are causing the problem. I have ran the site through numerous crawl tests, checked the robots.txt, there are no messages in GWMT, the pages are indexed but I have a feeling there is something wrong with the site that is stopping this site from ranking well. If anyone could give me any insights I would be really grateful. I know the site could be better structured from a keyword/ structure perspective but the site was ranking fine!

I've consolidated other domains to a single one with 301 redirects, yet the new domain authority in MOZ is much less that the redirected ones. Is that right?
I'm trying to increase the domain authority of my main site, so decided to consolidate other sites. One of the other sites has a much higher domain authority, but I don't know why after a 301 redirect, the new site's domain authority hasn't changed on over a month. Does MOZ take account of thes types of things?

301 Redirects Change?
Hi, Mozzers- I've noticed pages that are getting 301 redirected are staying out there longer. It used to be that you would implement a 301 redirect and then after a couple of months the old page would disappear out of Google's index. Over the last couple of months I've noticed pages lingering, popping up.... What gives? Thanks in advance! LHC

Https redirect
Hi there, a client of mine is asking me if Google would penalize to redirect from all the http urls to https (they want to change the security protocol). I assume it is going to work as a classic 301, right? so they might lose some authority in they way, but I am not 100% sure. Can anyone confirm this? does anyone has a similar experience? thanks a lot!

301 redirect
We have just had an outside SEO agency report on our site: One of things brought up were arounf broken links, and how they class them as broken links. Could any body tell me whether this statement holds true please, as I am not aware of this "Our latest intelligence shows that google are downgrading ranking from sites that feature 301 redirects within the internal link structure". Any help would be greatly appreciated Regards
