Rankings just took a wallop in the last hour.

Has anyone else checked their rankings today and noticed a big shift? We just got smacked by G big time.
-
We're measuring using a few different tools. Right now if I'm looking with the Google Preview Tool, it can sometimes show me what the deal is. I'm sure it's not the most accurate, but a ranking drop of 10 pages isn't hard to measure :P.
If there hasn't been any sort of update, I'm pretty sure I know what the problems are otherwise. I think they may have just updated a disavow file for us.
Today, the ranking is slowly crawling back up the list.

I've seen some major movements re: the sites I monitor over last 48 hours.
-
I use GSERP.com as well as AuthorityLabs, GWT and GA, along with several other tools to track keyword performance :: day-to-day and month-to-month :: for several sites and many dozens of keywords.
It is very common to see individual search queries vary up and down, DAY-TO-DAY, by a lot in the SERPs. Sometimes they will settle down at a steady SERP ranking, sometimes not. There are so many variables —— What is Google doing today with fine-tuning of adjustments in the algo? What are your competitors doing? What are users clicking on today?
Rather than look at noise in your results day-by-day, the trends month-to-month are far more interesting and useful, IMHO.
UPDATE/EDIT ::
It's just my own speculation, but I think Google has built-in a "hunting" feature where the SERP position is tested, up and down, by quite a lot — before it settles on a stable place . . .
Are users clicking on your SERP result, and staying in your website, or are they immediately bouncing back to Google search to look for something better? If you could answer that, you may find reasons for the downward trends in your SERPs.
What, specifically, are you measuring? What tools are you using?
-
Thanks for the response, Eric. When these major updates, or even smaller updates happen, do you commonly see an up and down shift for a single page? Do they fluctuate and then settle in a spot, or is it usually a one way shift for pages?
-
For most of the sites that I monitor on a regular basis, we're not seeing any major changes in rankings. It seems as though they're always making changes to the algorithm, and there were a few days last week where I saw some dips. At this point, though, since it's only been a short amount of time, I would wait to see how it plays out.

Losing keyword rankings and sessions.
I had removed /en from end of each page ( www.mydomain.com/en become www.mydomain.com) Could it be the reason of losing keyword rankings and sessions?

Title Tag Capitalization Impact on SERP Rankings and Click Through Rates
My company made a branding decision to use lowercase for all of our title tags. This, of course, means that our titles on SERPs are all lower case. Overwhelmingly, it seems that websites use title case. This makes me wonder if we're shooting ourselves in the foot. Does using lower case titles negatively impact our rankings and/or click through rates? Is there any data out there suggesting that title case has a better click through rate than lower case? Thanks for reading!

How can I track my rankings on Google Images?
I noticed a small amount of traffic coming from a particular very generic keyword. Being pleasantly surprised that we are ranking for this, and after some digging, I found that we are actually ranking in Google images, rather than in the web results. How can I track whether other keywords are ranking in Google images? I use Rank Checker to track keywords in the main web results, but this doesn't have a function for Google Images. Help please - thanks.

Strange Behaviour - Varying rankings across browsers and devices
Hello, I noticed something quite strange over the last week with one of my keywords. I'll explain the lead up to this so it makes more sense. I started SEO work for a client about 3 months ago. One of the keywords I'm trying to increase their ranking for is "auto body calgary". I made a specific landing page for this keyword so it could be better targeted. After I made this landing page I saw their root domain (not the landing page) increase about 10 rankings to number 9 in 2 months. It hung at number 9 for about a month, and then the last month it has decreased to rank 15. For interest sake I searched "auto body calgary" on multiple computers and browsers. On one of the computers I used Safari and my landing page showed up in the number 2 position. On my mobile phone and personal laptop I used Safari and it showed to root domain ranked at 15. I used Google to search every time and wasn't logged in to my Google account on either of the searches. The only thing I've done in the last month is updated some of their directory submissions so they are more consistent. Out of this I have two questions: Why would different browsers show considerably different rankings and pages for a keyword? Since my landing page is more targeted to "auto body calgary" is Google trying to show that page instead of the root domain? (my root domain has considerably more authority than this landing page) Thanks to anyone who can offer insight!

Previously performing page no longer ranking
The best performing page on my website www.danielalexandra.com/personal-training/ has suddenly completely fallen off the google radar and all of my ranking results for keywords have dropped significantly as a result. My domain is only 4/5 months old but was already becoming relatively competitive and generating some interest until this? Any ideas as to why this may have happened?

500 errors and impact on google rankings
Since the launch of our newly designed website about 6 months ago, we are experiencing a high number of 500 server errors (>2000). Attempts to resolve these errors have been unsuccessful to date. We have just started to notice a consistent and sustained drop in rankings despite our hard sought efforts to correct. Two questions... can very high levels of 500 errors adversely effect our google rankings? And, if this is the case, what type of specialist (what are they called) has expertise to investigate and fix this issue. I should also mention that the sitemap also goes down on a regular basis, which some have stated is due to the size of the site (>500 pages). Don't know if they're part of the same problem? Thanks.

Why doesnt Seomoz give daily ranking updates
Although a little obsessive I can't be the only one checking rankings on a daily basis. Indeed if such a practice was not widespread then software such as linktracker wouldnt exist. It's a shame that Seomoz has the functionality to check rank, however chooses to only do so once per week. Therefore we pay for tools such as link tracker in addition to Seomoz. Here starts a petition for daily updates!!! 😉
