Duplicate page content/page titles on tages
-
Hello everyone. New to the community and loving it already. Question, I am receiving an error of 6 pages with duplicate content and page titles. A majority of these are tag pages. Should I be worried about these? IN the column listed duplicate urls it is listing 0 ( screen shot: http://screencast.com/t/azvuVk0ucWt) Are these tags a problem? Will SEO be hurt because of this? What are TAG pages? Actually pages, categories, should I eliminate these?

Hi Jason
Glad you are liking the community so far! I would recommend starting with this post I did for Moz to help answer exactly these questions about WordPress and SEO: http://moz.com/blog/setup-wordpress-for-seo-success
When you're starting out and have just a few tags (6 isn't much) it's not a huge deal, but for some sites as they grow it turns into 300+ tags without planning on it - then it's a little more of an issue. Not something that would cause a penalty per se, but just not great for the site to have those extra pages indexed and existing because they don't generally add any value (they are often similar to the posts themselves).
I would use maybe 3-4 tags tops for any blog post. They are little detailed words to describe the content. Additionally, tags only have a utility if used as navigation in the site somehow: either a list of popular tags in the sidebar or sometimes you can click on the tags for each post at the bottom of the post.
Lots of people try to make tags to rank in search engines but I have found this to be a bad strategy. In general, I recommend people to noindex tags as shown in the article. With the Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress you should also "noindex subpages of archives".
Categories - I would create 5-7 categories that you will file all blog posts into - and only use those and don't let categories grow (don't keep adding new categories). You can customize your category pages with this plugin: http://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-custom-category-pages/ - and indexing them is fine.
Good luck!

Tag pages are normally used by larger websites, especially those who publish news frequently. Tag pages should help visitors of a website to find those pages they might be interested in.
Within CMS environments like wordpress (and others) the use of tags, categories and archives is very common. So the risk of creating DC is very high if you do not do your SEO homework right. If you are confronted with DC under the circumstances you describe, there are several ways to avoid that or solve the problem:
-
Meta Tag „noindex, (no)follow“ to archive, categories, tags and search results (or just let your subpages not be indexed)
-
Use rel= prev/next (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.de/2011/09/pagination-with-relnext-and-relprev.html)
-
Use of canonical tag (http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.de/2009/02/specify-your-canonical.html)
-
Some people just use “sites” and no archives, no tags, no posts (easy to avoid DC then but not the perfect solution for using the power of your CMS)
Please keep in mind, that YOU should decide which method fits better for your purposes! E.g. some people want their archives to be indexed and they don`t want to disclaim to use posts etc. etc.
by the way: if you use wordpress there is a plugin from Yoast which can help you to clean up the structures...

Why can I see 404 pages in Google Analytics but nothing in the On-Demand Crawl?
Hello, I'm looking at some Google Analytics data for a website and can see a few 'Page not found's among the Page Titles, looking like these are 404 errors. To get a full list of what's 404-ing so I can get these redirected, the Moz on-demand crawl of the website has come back with no major errors and just a few metadata ones. Does anyone know any potential reasons why the audit has drawn a blank, and is there another way to get a comprehensive list of 404s, as I'm aware the Google Analytics data may not be covering all of them. Thanks very much Becky

Calling all 301 htaccess Guru's - www to non www - then to https + Redirect homepage to inner page
I have tried searching, multiple opinions and multiple things that supposedly work. What I have now, seems to work from an end user perspective, but Roger tells me otherwise: Redirect Chain issue....redirect, which redirects which redirects etc..... FIRST, we need to redirect all www to non www. SECOND, we need to redirect all to https. THIRD, we need to redirect the homepage to an inner page. (Got to love BOGUS DMCA complaints! :)?) So far we have: RewriteEngine on

RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mydomain.com.au$ [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.mydomain.com.au$
RewriteRule ^/?$ "https://mydomain.com.au/inner-page-here" [R=301,L] Plus down the page there is the usual wordpress settings: <ifmodule mod_rewrite.c="">RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteRule ^index.php$ - [L]
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]</ifmodule> So, why does it seem to work for the end user, but Roger has his knickers in a knot saying, redirect, to redirect to redirect etc? Namaste and many thank you's in advance 🙂0 -

Moz is finding phantom pages
I suddenly have 4xx errors in my crawl diagnostics because pages with “/%3C/div” added to the end of the URL that are linked from the normal page can't be found. I didn't create the pages, and they don't exist, but Moz thinks that they do. I went back through to see if any changes in WordPress, theme or plugins versions might be the cause, but this is the only site that I have this issue, so I don't think that is it. Does anyone have an idea what causes this?

Is it normal for my homepage's page authority to be higher than my domain authority?
Hi everyone, I've just been checking my MOZ authority scores, and the page authority of my home page, www.concerthotels.com is 53 (mozRank of 6.16) which seems pretty good to me. However, the domain authority is only showing as 45. Is this typical? There is such a big difference between these two scores - what does that suggest? Is there anything obvious that I can do to bring the domain authority up to the level of authority that the homepage commands? Similarly, the UK version of my site has a homepage authority of 41, but the domain authority is only 30. Looking at numerous other websites, quite often the homepage and domain authority scores are very similar, or the domain authority is slightly higher, so it does look as if this is unusual. Any comments would be greatly appreciated, Many thanks Mike

Moz / more changes on the way?
I love Moz and the community and all the tools here. I admit I haven't rolled around in all the new things rolled out a few months ago. I thought there were more changes on the way but I wasn't sure if those already happened and I missed them or if I need to be patient? Affiliate program, client reporting? Thanks for any response. Have a great weekend! Matthew

SEOMOZ On page ranking reports update
I've recently made a load of changes to improve the on page ranking report grades for my site. I was givena C grade for this page: http://www.katalysticevents.com/luxury-wedding-teepee-hire-about/ based on two key phrases Wedding Tipi and Wedding Teepeee. I've made all the changes as advised (excluding H1 tag) by the report but when I rereun the report it's picking up old page data and showing the same problems. Is there some kind of cache thing I'm missing here? The confusing thing is I made the same series of changes for this page: www.katalysticevents.com/luxury-marquee-hire-services/ for Luxury marquee and luxury marquee hire and the results are fine...I've got an A grade. Examples are things like ALT image attirbutes which don't seem to show up on the first page but are fine on the second page.
