Website Redesign - Blogger To WordPress Platform URL Structure
-
I am transferring a website (www.EXAMPLE.com) From Blogger To Wordpress.
Currently, the website content is specific to cover the Colorado Market. In the near future, I plan on covering the same market in other state.
I have seen regional websites like this that have the URL structure - (STATE.EXAMPLE.com) I have also seen websites with URL Structure - (EXAMPLE.COM/STATE)
Is there any advantage using one URL structure over the other in term of SEO & otherwise?
In the process of transferring the website, I would like to clean-up the URL structure but I don't want to lose a significant amount of link juice/organic traffic. Do you recommend I restructure the URLs at this time?

Andy - Thank you! Very helpful. I will use the folders option.
Jane - Thank you!

Hi Bethany,
There are a couple of schools of thought on sub-domain vs folder. One postulates that a sub-domain will be like starting afresh in the eyes of Google, and it will take you months to gain rankings. The other will tell you that going down the folder route, this just benefits from your current structure and you are just creating new pages and won't have to wait to be ranked.
Just so you know, sub-domains no longer take an age to start ranking - it can be a matter of days, but it all depends on what you are wanting to achieve.
That said, unless there was a reason to go down the subdomain route, then I would go with the folder route - it is much more straight forward.
If you are wishing to restructure your site, then just remember to not make the URL's too long; keep them on target and not spammy, but remain descriptive. Something like www.example.com/state/content is absolutely fine and there can be no questions in anyones mind where they are if they see this.
When restructuring, make use of 301 redirects in order to point old pages to the new ones, but never 301 a 301 - this will result in a much greater loss of link juice.
I hope this helps.
-Andy

Keyword Phrase in URL structure
Wondered the best URL structure, to include a major keyword phrase. Our clients' case is that their domain name is not the main keyword. So should we include the keyword phrase in the URL structure to list all their office locations: A - www.website.com/anxiety-treatment/denver/1001

or
B - www.website.com/denver/1001 Would this be considered keyword stuffing? We'd like "A" above to rank for keyword phrases related to "anxiety treatment denver", etc.0 -
URL Structure & SEO - Should we be using sub-folders?
Hi all, As part of our content marketing efforts we have run a number of initiatives in the past and created pages on the website to go along with them (also where the links for these particular projects point to). However, the URL structure isn't actually a reflection of where the pages sit on the site. Unfortunately I'm unable to provide a URL for reasons I won't bore you with, but here's an example: We recently ran a competition that was very successful in generating links. The URL for this is www.domain.co.uk/competition. However, the page actually sits within the About Us section - which is where all of our news and content marketing pages go - and uses a URL override. How much of an issue is this in regards to A) Our SEO in general?; and B) Ensuring we receive as much equity from the links we earn as possible? A brief explanation of what URL overrides actually are would also be useful! (We have a digital marketing agency who handle most of our SEO) Thanks in advance guys! John

Website redirects
We consolidated websites. All the international sites have been brought under the roof of our mothership site based in the US: www.crisisprevention.com ... We mapped out all of the URLs and where they should be redirected. However, if someone types in, say, www.crisisprevention.co.uk it redirects to the mothership site, BUT the old URL hangs around no matter what page you navigate to. I feel like it has duplicate content ramifications or worse. I would like opinions on this, so I can take my findings to IT and figure out a solution. Here’s another example: http://www.positive-options.co.uk and another http://www.positive-options.com

Website IP Location
My main target audience is in the UK, but my website's IP is in the United States. Would it be worthwhile to change the IP to a UK address? How would I go about that? Thanks!

Hi, I am currently getting a web designer to upgrade my website. I have built lost of links to my internal pages, should I get him to 301 redirect example.com/about.html (old) to example.com/about (new) OR Is there any need for this once the page doesn't change to example.com/about-us? HTML url extension
I've read some information about the extension of an url. But i couldn't find a clear answer. What is better for SEO, an extension with html or without? /make-money-online/how-to-make-a-million-dollars-in-1-year/ or /make-money-online/how-to-make-a-million-dollars-in-1-year.html/ Is there a difference between a normal website or a blog?
