Rankings dropped overnight
-
We have been doing some optimization for a client. They were not ranked for many keywords before we started, and up until last week 10 were on page 1, with the the last few following closely behind. Everything was moving in the right direction.
In this weeks ranking report every one has dropped significantly and some 30 places in one week. We have made no significant changes to the site in the last few weeks.
The only issue we picked up on was the slow site speed on their current host 1&1.
Any ideas what could have caused the site to have lost ground on all rankings so significantly?

Thanks everyone for the comments.
- We have manually checked the SERP's most look fairly accurate, some are higher ranked than actually quoted.
- We checked robots.txt all was fine.
- We did have a quick look in WMT for any crawl errors. They were showing 32 404 not found which we have corrected (mainly old links to tags on the blog on their old website), The new site has been up around 4 months a d we redirected all main page URLS to the new ones
- No keyword stuffing
- Maybe a honeymoon period. But they were ranked for most keywords before, all we did was improve on the on site SEO.
Think we will monitor it. Its only the first ranking report back that all keywords had dropped.
Thanks a lot for all the feedback.

Self made links on just 5 sites is unlikely to cause you to be drastically penalized. I'd still remove these links but I'd look for something else. As David Liu asked, make sure you confirm that there actually is a ranking drop and it's not just something that Moz is reporting.
Have a good look for technical issues. For example, make sure you haven't accidentally noindexed pages or altered your robots.txt to block Google. It sounds silly, but I've seen it happen.
How long have you been ranking on page 1? If this was a fairly recent thing then it's possible that was a honeymoon phase. Sometimes Google allows new sites to experience the first page for a while and then drops them to their correct rankings.
Also look at any recent changes you have made. For example, have you changed urls? Have you done any keyword stuffing?
Slow hosting for a short time period shouldn't make any drastic differences. However, if you were completely offline for a good amount of time that could affect your rankings but things should improve quickly.
One final tip would be to check WMT for crawl errors. Sometimes you can get some hints there as to what is going on.

Did you manually check your rankings? Moz is known to post massive drops like that despite little to no real movement in the SERPs.

HI Martin,
Thanks for info. I have checked Webmaster tools straight away and don't see any notices. I have checked back on the report done by the other company and they have listed the same article on the following 5 sites:
Think I will get the removed and see how it goes...

Hi,
What you've described sounds like a standard penalty for 'Unnatural Links' as Google would call it. If you've submitted the same article to multiple sites, or a spun article to multiple sites it's highly likely that this is the cause. Sorry!
If you have access to Google Webmaster Tools, then go to the 'Manual Action' section and if you've been manually penalized, it will tell you there.
I recommend deleting the articles where possible and disavowing all the sites that you submitted the articles to, then filing a 'Reconsideration Request' with Google.
If there's no manual action, still delete the articles. Google now has negative link juice from poor quality links, so even without the manual action, this could still be the cause.
Hope that helps!

To add, the only thing I believe it can be is some links that we had built back to the site by another company local to us.
They did some directory submission & article creation and sharing which was completed on the 14th of April. So this would maybe tie in with the recent change in rankings.
Is there any way to see if these links are damaging the sites reputation?

Are Multiple Page Titles hurting my rankings
The platform that built our website has, for some reason, put multiple page titles on all of our webpages: https://www.backyardadventures.com/ If you open this page and "View Page Source" you will see that there are 50 page title tags (). There is one with our actual page title, but there are 49 others that look like this: <title></span><span class="html-tag">lock</span><span class="html-tag"></title> or <title></span><span class="html-tag">bubbles2</span><span class="html-tag"></title> are just two of the examples. The company said that because they are in a svg tag () they are fine. The title tags show up on some of the Moz tools. Is this effecting our rankings?

Website Refresh - Lost Rankings
Hi, we refreshed our website a few weeks ago, with a new design. The structure has changed and pages do have new URLs. But the content, meta titles, etc have stayed the same and I have put 301 redirects in for all of the new pages (using the redirection plugin in word press). I have found that pages which ranked in the top 3 in the past are now nowhere. The page authority also shows as 1 for all of the pages. Is there something we should do to get the rankings and page authority back? Many Thanks

Understanding why our new page doesn't rank. Internal link structure to blame? + understand canonical pages more.
Hi guys. Sorry it's an essay...BUT, i think a lot of you will find this an interesting question. This question is in 2 (related) parts, and I imagine it would be an 'advanced' SEO question. Hoping you guys can help bring some real insight 🙂 Always amazed at the quality for this forum/ community. **Context... ** We had a duplicate content issue caused by this page and it's product permutations, so we placed canonical tags on all the product permutations to solve it. Worked a treat. However, we now have more **product ranges. **We now sell Diaries, Notebooks & Music books, which are clearly different from one another. So...we've placed canonical tags on all the product permutations leading back to the 'parent' theme. In other words, all the diary permutations 'lead back' to the diary page. All the notebooks permutations 'lead back' to the main notebook page. So on and so forth. Make sense so far? Context end..... Issue. Amazingly our Diary page outranks our notebook pagefor the search term 'Design your own Notebook'. The notebook page is well optimised for this search term, and the diary page avoids the word 'notebook' altogether (so no keyword cannibalisation going on). Possible reason? Our Diary page has a vast amount of internal links to it throughout our site. The notebook page has only a few. Could this be the issue? If so, what reading/ blogs/ content/ tools would you recommend to help understand and solve this problem? i.e) Better understanding internal link structure for SEO. 2nd part of the question (in the context of internal linking for SEO). When there are internal links to a page with a conical tag does that 'count' towards the 'parent page', or simply towards that specific page? I really hope that makes sense. If it's clear as mud just shout. Isaac. EDIT: All pages in question have been indexed since we added these changes to the site.

Ranking for "synonym" terms on separate pages?
(My title says "synonym" but it's not exactly the most accurate word, but works best for the title_) I have a site that ranks #1 for a term, and let’s pretend it’s “cheap phone”. It’s also ranks #1 for “cheap phone service” and #3 for “cheap phone plans”. These are all the home page with those rankings I have a sub page whose natural title would be “Cheap Phone Plans” or “Cheap Phone Service”. I have it named something these and it is not optimized for either of these terms because I think it would be best to not mess with the good rankings I have already for those two terms So here’s my question: what would likely be the outcome if I optimized that subpage for “Cheap Phone Plans” or “Cheap Phone Service”? If Google began to direct searchers of this term to my subpage rather than my home page, would my home page lose some of it’s ranking with it’s main and most popular keyword, “cheap phone? Thanks!

Entire subfolder not ranking.
I'm currently running an ecommerce site on which an entire subfolder namely the: /category/ extension is not ranking for any keywords. The category pages are being indexed within Google. Pages with very similar content are however being ranked for keywords on extensions such as /pages/, I created a new page to test this and within a week it was ranking for the keywords where /category/ pages have not for months. I was wondering if anyone had come across this issue before and had any solutions or suggestions? Thanks.

Drop in Internal Links to Root
This morning I noticed in Google Webmaster Tools that my internal links to my root domain (Home Page), dropped from 428,000 to 58,000. It appears that this could be my header or footer links back to the home page that Google is not showing any more. My programmers claim they have not made any changes over the last 30 days. My rankings and traffic are normal. Any cause for concern?

I have two pages ranking for the same keyword.
The index page and the targeted landing page for that keyword. They have different content, title, meta but I am competing with myself for the main keyword in the industry. What is the best way to fix this? 301 the keyword page to the index page?
