Increase in 404 errors in Webmaster Tools
-
We have recently updated our website www.cooke.co.uk and twice webmaster tools have reported an increase in 404 errors.
However, these errors are not for normal pages, they are things like http://www.cooke.co.uk/?post_type=crown_enquiry&p=1045
I have used the redirection tool in WordPress to redirect all these links to the homepage but does anyone know why this is happening since it is the second time I had to do it.
Thanks.

Hi Brian,
First of all, remove all of those 301's to the homepage. This will cause you nothing but a huge headache (like now, you have redirect loops). Redirecting pages en-masse to your homepage is a big no-no in general.
Hop back into Webmaster Tools and mark the 404's as fixed and hopefully this should appease Googlebot as it doesn't look like those pages actually exist on the site anywhere, unless you have captured each one with a redirect.
You can block all of those pages via the robots.txt file as well by adding the following:
Disalow: /?post_type=crown_enquiry&p=*
I would also block the /wp-content/ folder via robots.txt while you are at at as well.
My robots file looks like this:
User-agent: * Disallow: /wp-admin/ Disallow: /wp-includes/ Disallow: /wp-content/ Sitemap: http://www.inetseo.co.uk/sitemap.xml.gz
That said, 404's won't really do anything to your rankings - it is more of a warning that something isn't there than anything else. Of course, if you had a site that had 10,000 pages then you suddenly got 9,999 404 errors, this might be a little different

Moz is showing different "errors" than Webmaster tools
I have set up my Moz campaign and the crawl errors are showing multiple duplicate content and page titles however when I check my webmaster tools data, these errors are not showing up. Is this normal and who should I listen to?

Webmaster tools help
Looking at some Google Webmaster tools data and im a bit stumped. Can anyone tell me if the "not selected" pages should be taken from the "total indexed pages" or are they a seperate entity? The way the data is displayed on the graph leads you to believe they should be taken from the total indexed pages, yet Googles own description of "not selected" pages says that these pages are not indexed. Confused.

Google Webmaster Tools is showing wrong data - help?
Hey all, I'm seeing some weird problems with Webmaster Tools. Specifically: We've submitted a sitemap with 174k URLs. According to the WMT dashboard, only 21 are indexed, though if you search our site via site:sitename.com blah blah, there are thousands of pages returned. Why is WMT only showing 21 indexed pages? Yet if I go to Health -> Index Status, it's showing nearly 199k URLs indexed. This seems consistent with searching Google site:sitename.com blah blah. Under "Search Queries", it's showing "no data available". Not sure why as it's linked to the proper Google Analytics account, which has keyword data. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong here? Thanks.

Subdomain and relative link paths cause crawl errors
I have a Wordpress blog on our subdomain and we use relative paths on our domain. It appears as though Google bot is crawling from the subdomain categories back to the domain relative paths. This of course results in hundreds of 404 pages. Any suggestions as to how to resolve this issue without changing the relative path structure of our domain? I can provide more information if need be. While I realize these issues are not that pressing, I'd obviously like to remove as many errors as possible. If anyone has encountered this problem, especially in Wordpress I'd really like to hear your solution or lack there of. Thank you in advance.

WMT tools - setting parameter for redirected URLs
Hi everybody. One of our clients has recently moved from one ecommerce platform to another. During the move, a huge number of URLs have been tidied up to remove dynamic parameters. The old URLs have been redirected to the new, tidy ones. My question is whether it's worth telling Google in the WMT URL parameters section not to index the parameters of the old URLs. Will this affect the redirects in any way? Thanks!

Backlinks on Google Webmaster Tools
As I was reviewing my Google Webmaster tools, I notices a major drop in the number of back links. It used to show over 4,500 links to my site yet the other day it dropped down to 41. None of the directories I've submitted to are showing, nor any blog comments I've posted. Since then, my SEO traffic has started to drop for some keywords. Anyone know why?

Phantom urls causing 404
I have a very strange problem. When I run SEOmoz diagnostics on my site, it reveals urls that I never created. It seems to combine two slugs into a new url. For example, I have created the pages http://www.naplesrealestatestars.com/abaco-bay-condos-naples/ and http://www.naplesrealestatestars.com/beachwalk-naples-florida/ and now the url http://www.naplesrealestatestars.com/abaco-bay-condos-naples/beachwalk-naples-florida/ exists in addition to the two I created. There are over 100 of these phantom urls and they all show a 404 error when clicked on or crawled by SEOmoz. Any body know how to correct this?
