Disavow & nofollow from same IP
-
I'm a web developer, and as such, we run a bank of half a dozen dedicated servers.
I have 2 questions with regards to nofollow links
-
There's half a dozen sites linking back to us from the same bank of servers (across 3 different IP's but all in the same facility) because we have donated our web design services and we're a sponsor. It's not a paid link, it's a sponsorship. Should I still nofollow the link?
-
I run a couple of personal blogs on the same bank of servers. There's an absolute tonne of original content and a handful of links back to my shop. Because I own both sites, should I nofollow these links as well?
I am doing a massive cleanup before the Penguin pops his head out again.

Thanks. I'm going to err on the side of caution and nofollow ALL of the links from my personal blog to my business. In the grand scheme of things, it makes up such a small percentage of links to our store. Our pagerank won't suffer. The sponsorships are literally 10 or 12 logos on a sporting club or surf club website. For those we made ourselves that I have easy access to, I have also done the nofollow as they're all living on the same bank of servers. (we donated the hosting space and websites as our sponsorship deal).
Others where we have just given money or time and have no control over, I'm comfortable that they're legit and wont' get penalised. Asking a volunteer at a surf club to nofollow a hyperlink will be met by strange looks

Very interesting question. No one really knows whether Google takes into account links from your own sites via the Penguin algorithm. If you have an obvious network for links then I've seen that penalized via MANUAL review, but can Penguin get that?
Bill Slawski writes here about a patent that Google may use to detect paid links. Part of the patent describes ways that Google could determine which sites are owned by you and devalue links between those sites.
Are sponsorship links unnatural? It really depends on the nature of the sponsorship. There are pages where you can donate $5 to sponsor some software and in return you get listed on a PR5 page along with other sponsors who have names like "cheap payday loans" and "online casino". Those are unnatural sponsors.
Technically, according to the quality guidelines all sponsored links should be nofollowed. However, if you have links from places that you have sponsored and you legitimately would have sponsored these businesses even if there was no followed link in it for you, then IMO it's very unlikely that you'll get in trouble. With that being said, if you had hundreds of these links then a manual reviewer could probably pick up quite easily that something unnatural is going on. The other factor to help you with making your decision is whether the other links on the page make sense. Again, if they have a link to you and then other links that are obviously there so that people can get a link (and not because they make sense as sponsors) then I'd get the link nofollowed.
Your personal sites kind of follow the same rules. If the links are ones that you would have placed even if they were nofollowed then they're probably ok. Are they keyword anchored? If so, then this can be seen as an attempt to manipulate Google so that's not good.
It's hard to give an exact answer, but in each case if you ask yourself whether the link was made with the intention of helping your Google rankings then you know that you probably should be nofollowing it.

Is There Value in Disavowing Links if you there is No Google Penalty?
I have just started using Link Detox to determine if our clients have links/domains pointing to their sites that could be harming them in organic search. In a few cases 7%-9% of links have been flagged as a high priority to be disavowed. I would be interested in your opinion on the following: If your site does not have a Google penalty is there an advantage to disavowing pages that have been flagged as high risk? When I go to those pages they look spammy and have no real value other than an inbound link. If a client acquires another website/company and that website is now 301 redirected to the client's site, would "high risk" inbound links from the acquired company cause a problem for my client? A client has taken down content from their site that was completely unrelated to their current business. Is there a benefit in disavowing those links to the old content that are deemed by Link Detox as being high risk? Thank you, Rosemary

Disavow question
Hi there, I have 2 website's, and one of them will be redirected to the other. For both I need to do a disavow list, but I don't know how is better. I should make only one disavow list for the main site, and include the link from the site that I will redirect, or make a list for each website?

Over Optimised Anchor Text (Internal & external)
Hi First - is it possible for internal anchor text to be considered 'over optimised' in terms of diversity or does that just apply to external backlinks ? For example If you have a main site section/page thats about a service you offer and you call the page this service and the URL this service and then link to it from many internal locations (but in a logical useful manner not just for the sake of it) using this service/keyword as the link anchor text i take it this WONT ever be considered over optimised anchor text since is completely in context, makes sense, is useful and after all is what the page/section is called (so would be strange to call it and link to it via any other term) ? Second - I have a project who's backlink profile is nice and diverse and could by no means be considered over optimised on a domain level. However looking at page level a main site section/page (as above) has only one back link with exact match anchor text from the BOTW directory, so in regard to that page keyword rich anchor text from this one backlink is at 100%. However the anchor text is what the page/section is called (title and url). I presume that this is also unlikely to be considered over optimised (since makes sense, is logical helpful and would be strange to name it anything else) or could it be considered over optimised ? Thanks Dan

Affiliate Links & SEO
Hi Looking at my backlink profile I noticed that I had 150 links coming from one site. Ahhhh I thought in light if the recent Penguin updates. Upon closer inspection I noticed that my link is only on the homepage of that site but because that site sells its product via clickbank they have got loads of versions of that site because of its affiliates. For example: MAINSITE is www.mainsite.com then there are 150 affiliates using hoplinks via clickbank so its: www.mainsite.com?hopmrbig www.mainsite.com?blablahblah etc etc The question: Will this hurt me? In theory I got 1 link on their homepage but will Google see it as 150 versions of the same site? Your thoughts please? SMP

Alternative for HidemyAss IP swticher
Hi, I have a small team of people from the Philippines who does SEO for me and we've been using HMA as our IP switcher. It has been working for us although it slows down our internet considerably. These last few months though, we've been noticing that more and more sites could tell that we are using IP switcher. Do you know any IP switcher that we can use as a replacement for HMA? Or any thoughts on addressing this issue?
