How to redirect subdomain to new blog directory
-
I have moved my wordpress blog from a subdomain to a subdirectory /blog/ on my site. What is the best way to setup a redirect from the subdomain to the new /blog/ directory?
Or should I just delete the subdomain blog and wait for google to index it on /blog/. I need to do one or the other so as not to run into duplicate content issues.
-
Just look at Google webmaster tools to be sure there are no external incoming links. Then go ahead and move it.
-
Thanks. It's a new blog and has no links pointing to it so would it be okay just to move it?

Unless you 301-redirect the subdomain to the subdirectory, you will be throwing away all the existing value of the blog, Sam, and will be essentially starting again from scratch.
It's a simple matter of adding the 301-redirect code to the .htaccess file. There are plenty of examples in other posts here on Q&A. If you can't find one, or need additional help, just let me know.
But do the redirect! You don't want to throw away all the work done up 'til now.

Yes agree, 301 redirects are the way to go. I'd want to take a look at incoming links to individual subdomain blog pages before deciding whether to do a single subdomain to subdirectory redirect, or use a page to page mapping and redirect strategy.

301 redirect subdomain to subdirectory. You can often do this in your Cpanel for your server.

How Much Does a Missing www. 301 redirect hurt a business?
We're preparing a report for a potential client, and are trying to figure out a way to estimate rankings gains. One of the major issues is a lack of a 301 redirect for non-www. domains to www. domains. We checked and there's no canonicalization, so it's a clear issue. According to Google, the non-www. links from 8 different domains. The www. version of the website has links from 248 different domains. Nearly all anchor text is branded, as they've never had any SEO work done before. Does anyone have a suggestion for approximating benefits of setting up their .htaccess file correctly? Would the benefits even be that great? We're of course advising additional things, but we just want to be more certain about this step's SEO-boost.

302 redirections warnings
Hi there, the SEOMOZ crawler has detected some warinings related to the 302 temporary redirections. Example: http://www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com/tks-camp/alojamiento/ redirects to www.tarifakeitesurfcamp.com/error-404 I have made some 301 redirections, located at the end of the final (inicially) and later I just moved them to the top of the file. The htaccess file content is: redirect 301 http://www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com/tks-camp/escuela/ http://www.tarifakitesurfcamp.com/gisela-pulido-escuela/

Is my blog simply duplicate content of my authors' profiles?
www.example.com/blog is the full list of blog posts by various writers. The list contains the title of each article and the first paragraph from the article. In addition to /blog being indexed, each author's contribution list is being indexed separately. It's not a profile, really, just a list of articles in the same title & paragraph format of the /blog page. So if /blog a list of 10 articles written by two writers, I have three pages: /blog/author1 is a list of 4 articles /blog/author2 is a list of 6 different articles /blog is a list of 10 articles (the 4+6 from the two writers) Is this going to be considered duplicate content?

What is the best way to integrate our blog into our ecommerce website?
Hi all, We run an eCommerce website at www.oursite.com plus a blog (including news / articles / reviews / how-to guides etc.) at blog.oursite.com (those aren't really our site URLs, BTW ;-). For SEO reasons previously discussed on here, and for ease of use for our customers / browsers, we now want to integrate the two more closely. This will mean: Our blog will move to www.oursite.com/blog We will try to feature the blog content in places where it is relevant to customers (so e.g. news and blog posts about shoes would appear on our shoes category page, a review of some Adidas XL1000 shoes would appear on the Adidas XL1000 shoes product page) The blog is currently run on a wordpress.com site, so we'll need a new CMS (or wordpress.org) to get more control of the data. My issues are that, although it's good from a users point of view, having blog articles appear in lots of different places on the site might cause issues with duplicate content from a search engine's point of view. Has anyone got any pointers on how to integrate the two in a way that will make most use of the good original content coming out of our blog, while not "watering it down" by spreading it around too much? Can anyone point to examples of shops that do this well? Is there any software (other than Wordpress) that people would recommend using? As always, any help greatly appreciated! Alex

301 internal redirects
Hello, I have a lot of low quality pages on my site, many of which have very similar URLs and cover similar topics. I want to tidy up my site by using 301 redirects as Rand suggests here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-to-solve-keyword-cannibalization 1. As a rough rule of thumb, how many internal 301 redirects is too many? 2. Can lots be to the homepage if they're relevant? (I could have as many as 30) Thanks, Kevin

Should I fix 302 redirects?
I have a Magento ecommerce site that allows customers to compare products. When SEOmoz crawled the site, it came back with over 6,000 302 redirect errors related to the compare products feature. Is this harming our rankings? And any suggestions on the best way to fix it?

Installing a site on top level domain directory VS deeper directory
How important it is for seo to install a site on a top level directory vs deeper directory? example: www.mysite.com VS www.mysite.com/catalog many eCommerce scripts such as oscommerce and cre loaded will install by default to /catalog and that's what I've been doing for most of my customer. does it mean it will be harder for them to get good seo results? Thanks in advance for the input...

My homepage no longer ranks for a keyword, instead a page from the blog now appears in the results
Hello, Our site used to rank for a specific keyword - "eco products", with a link going to the homepage. However, in the last few weeks, we've noticed that the home page no longer ranks for this keyword, and instead the second result on the page is a link to a catagory page on our blog. I'd be very grateful if anyone had any information about why this might have happened, and what possible steps I could take to remedy the situation. Many thanks, Sophy
