What is the best way to remove a link that redirects to a spammy site?
-
I've got a new client and I'm trying to clean up their backlinks. There are several links that all redirect to this spam site http://www.expert-lender.com. All of the websites appear to be real, i.e. http://www.sammorganhomes.com/ but the actual links i.e http://www.sammorganhomes.com/wp-fav/backup/supplement/semitruckleasing.html are in a sub-directory and redirect to the spam site.
I don't know if these links were from the previous SEO company or if they paid someone to create these or if these sites have been hacked. Can anyone tell me what is going on here and what should I tell these site owners?

Thanks for the response and I appreciate the information.

I usually see this kind of link when I'm doing backlink cleanup for payday loans sites. Not sure how they happen, but I usually do deal with them rather than ignore them. When I come across these I usually disavow both on the domain level. So, you'd do the following:
domain:sammorganhomes.com
domain:expert-lender.comIf you don't have a manual penalty then you don't need to worry about getting the links removed. (I recommend removing what you can easily remove and then disavowing the rest.) If you do have a manual penalty, you can try to find contact info and if you can't contact them, don't sweat it...just document in your spreadsheet that you have tried to find contact info or send emails and didn't get a response. Google knows you can't contact every site that links to you.

Long story short, the page isn't cached in Google, but it does redirect - so odds are the actual link is gone. Your client's site content was probably scraped. In another example, whoever did this also scraped content from another site.
Scraping is pretty common, and it would result in backlinks if the scraper didn't totally remove all of the links. The scraper/hacker likely didn't choose sites strategically, rather they likely just targeted vulnerable sites.
If you run into live instances of your client's stolen content, there is always the option of a DMCA takedown.
Edit: I just revisited my response and found that even the Web Archive link redirects. I took a look at the source code after stopping the browser before the redirect, I haven't found anything in a timely manner. Suffice to say, that's odd.

Thanks Travis and Jane.
These links are showing up in Open Site Explorer for my client, so I don't know what is visible when crawled, but there is an immediate redirect to the spam site when I open the link in a browser.

Hi there,
Sorry, can you clarify - are you saying that your client supposedly has links on pages like http://www.sammorganhomes.com/wp-fav/backup/supplement/semitruckleasing.html, but that those pages redirect to the spam site?

If the links don't point to your client, there's little to no need to tell anyone anything - other than out of courtesy. You would do better telling their host's technical support, however. Hosts tend to hate this stuff more than site owners for some odd reason.
But yes, the example given looks like the result of a hack. Now that doesn't mean the links weren't paid, per se - but the hack is the end result. It wouldn't surprise me if whomever did the hacking later pulled the links and pointed them elsewhere.
You could follow that rabbit hole to the end of the internet. Instead I would focus on links that actually point to your client's site. And that is if it appears the links have harmed, or definitely will harm the site.
If you feel the need to continue, gather as much link information as you can from open site explorer, Google and Bing Webmaster Tools, Majestic SEO and/or aHrefs. Once you have a mess of spreadsheets in-hand, prune duplicate links. Then, feed it into Cemper Link Detox.
Link Detox should be able to flag the obvious stuff. But they also still put out some false positive/negatives, so you still have to judge links individually. During the judging phase, I always use a Linux machine. You never know when you'll hit something that executes script - then your machine is totaled.

Is are Scoopon type sites a good place to get a link?
We have noticed that our competitors have links with equality from sites like this: http://www.groupon.com.au/ Scoopon type sites like this can be an effective way to generate sales for a business, I'm just wondering if these types of sites also have added value for SEO as sites like these do have a strong Domain Authority? Any thoughts on this subject would be most appreciated. Thanks!

Best On-Site Internal Linking Practices?
Hi everyone, Our company works extensively with ecommerce website, and we're beginning to wonder with all of the impending Google updates what our best bets for internal linking practices will be, in particular when it comes to menu options. We typically set up our navigation with top-level categories in the main menu, then drop downs to the sub-category level pages. Our question is, should the links in the drop-down menus be followed, and if so, should they be followed links across all pages of the website, or just on the homepage menu list, or not at all? We're trying to figure out what will pass the most internal linking power without being too much and overly "spammy," I guess. Thanks for your input!

30,746 Links from One Site to Our Site
I learned this morning in our Google Webmaster Account about a website has 30,746 links to our website. Both our website and their site present information related to plastic materials, so in essence they complement one another. However, is having that massive amount of links from one site to ours a bad thing and should we use Google Disavow? Also, they have a PR3 while our site is PR5 (not sure if that matters much).

Link building for a product review site
I'm doing SEO for a product review website, and I'm curious what link building opportunities are best for this category. Assume only the following: The website is basically a blog Most of the articles are reviews on cosmetic products, though there are also articles regarding news, product roundups, tips&tricks and similar content The website is in a local, non-english language Disregarding low-value opportunities such as directories, what kind of websites should I aim for outreach purposes? So far, I'm thinking the following: Product manufacturers (very low success chance, as the review site is fairly new and in a localized language) E-commerce sites selling the products (average to low success chance, since a lot of them use CMSes that might not allow integration of a review) Other cosmetic blogs, particularly for guest blogging (average to low success chance, since the website is fairly new) Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks!

Should you proactively remove spammy links?
Occasionally I notice spammy sites linking to us. Should I proactively try to request that they take down the links to avoid getting penalized? Or should I just wait for Google to provide a disavow link tool.

Too many links - How to address without removing them?
Hi, When a page has too many links (over 100) due to the number of monthly blog archives for example, is it possible to use a code (like no index but just for one link) that would prevent Google from counting the link? Or not in which case the only options would be to leave the extra links or to delete them. I do not want to put a no index at the page level but more at link level by preventing SE to follow the least important links but keeping them active for users. Thank you, David

Best Way To Set Up Link Structure
I have set up each page on my site to be a landing page as it were . Employing a couple of concepts one of which being that I do not want the user to browse away from the page to a page that has no contact form on it . I would in fact prefer as most landing page companies seem to agree that the user stay on the page where they land and contact me through the form . I currently have a page called my domain/links that displays a superfish Joomla menu that I have not styled or done anything with really because I only use it to access the pages while editing and have no real intention of a user Actually finding the page . I intend on eventually deleting it . Most of the pages on the site are directed towards geographical cities in the surrounding area . The pages are not duplicate content obviously but they are all speaking pretty much the same message to my audience . Hey this company does electrical work in your town . I have no problem with putting a text link menu at the bottom of the page before the footer with all of the pages on the site . However this being a content management site I could simply put this at the bottom of every page . Should I do this ? Or should I put this only on the home page and then have all the other pages link back to the homepage . Or should I do a hybrid of this and put them all on the home page and then on the other pages put Four or five links to different services that we do such as recessed lighting , under cabinet lighting , get a quote . Pages such as this that I actually want the user to possibly browse to Such as in a traditional website model . I am a firm believer that keeping the person on this page Leads to higher conversions . However visually speaking the opportunity to fill out the form is there on every page . There are many things to consider so I would like a few professional opinions . Thanks ! PS Merchant circle has been getting some negative press lately . I have a blog there that has a great page ranking . Previously I was copying a version of my text links and posting it at the bottom of my blogs . Is merchant circle still in good staining and a good bet for links ? opinions comments thank you !

Best to create a new blog as a subsection or as a new site?
Our company has a blog "feature" or "theme" that we'd like to publish every week at least. Should we create a subsection of our current company blog? Or should we register a new domain specifically for the feature? The latter would allow us to do some linking back to the main website, and would probably be good in terms of future career flexibility / personal branding for whoever writes it. Things to keep in mind? Anyone have any suggestions? Best practices? What should I do?
