Will subdomains with duplicate content hurt my SEO? (solutions to ranking in different areas)
-
My client has offices in various areas of the US, and we are working to have each location/area rank well in their specific geographical location.
For example, the client has offices in Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas & St Louis.
Would it be best to:
- Set up the site structure to have an individual page devoted to each location/area so there's unique content relevant to that particular office? This keeps everything under the same, universal domain & would allow us to tailor the content & all SEO components towards Chicago (or other location).
( example.com/chicago-office/ ; example.com/atlanta-office/ ; example.com/dallas-office/ ; etc. )
- Set up subdomains for each location/area...using the basically the same content (due to same service, just different location)? But not sure if search engines consider this duplicate content from the same user...thus penalizing us. Furthermore, even if the subdomains are considered different users...what do search engines think of the duplicate content?
( chicago.example.com ; atlanta.example.com ; dallas.example.com ; etc. )
3) Set up subdomains for each location/area...and draft unique content on each subdomain so search engines don't penalize the subdomains' pages for duplicate content?
Does separating the site into subdomains dilute the overall site's quality score?
Can anyone provide any thoughts on this subject?
Are there any other solutions anyone would suggest?
-
First off, chicago.yoursite.com is going to be seen differently from atlanta.yoursite.com, unless they are substantially similar (i.e. they are carbon copies). Remember that this means that each subdomain will have its own SEO. yoursite.com/chicago is going to be viewed as the same site as yoursite.com/atlanta because they share the same TLD.
Unless you're going to build a ton of content around each, I would suggest one site with a subdirectory. It's less work for you. Then make each localized page unique. Take pictures, discuss the features of each location, etc. Add the address and maybe a map widget.

Subdomains are seen as completely different websites. This means you would be diluting your authority. Using duplicate content on these subdomains would also definitely be an issue.
You're best bet would be to have different pages for each location, and make sure each of those page have unique content. This way it's all on the same website, fresh content on each page, and you still accomplish what you were looking to.
You could also go one step further and link each of the location pages to individual G+ pages and take advantage there as well.

Server was banned, now all sites have dropped ranking.
Hi, I'm new here 🙂 I look after half a dozen sites on the one server. Early January three of those Wordpress sites were hacked and reported for phishing. All sites have been cleaned and the report(s) removed but they are all ranking much lower than previously. I also added IP block to the sites to limit the traffic to Australia and New Zealand as these are all local small businesses. I checked IP reputation for the server and it is neutral, with no blacklisting showing. I checked with the hosting company and they have no bans or warnings on the server either. These sites were ranking ok, usually first or second page but they have all dropped down to page 5 or worse now. Is there anything else I should check? I have resubmitted the sites to Google a few days ago. Any guidance greatly appreciated. I a web designer so I know a little about SEO but this is beyond me.

Rankings conundrum
I have a website that is much better optimized than its competitors, but the competitors rank much higher for the keywords I'm going for! This site: https://carlsbadchiropractic.com/ Has errors and all sorts of issues but it ranks in the top 10 for all the keywords I'm trying to rank for in Carlsbad, CA. chiropractor, chiropractic, carlsbad chiropractor, and chiropractor near me. My site: https://www.gohlclinic.com is much better optimized for a year now and it still ranks extremely low for these keywords. Not to mention, I was #1 for chiropractic and then it suddenly dropped to #97 and all I did was optimize some images. It's now back up to #17 but I'm seriously confused. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I'd really appreciate it.

Company with different branches: Generic Keywords & Localized Keywords: Best practise?
INITIAL SITUATION: We offer a branded product/service in different cities. We have different contact pages for every city (—> basically just a form and a map, i.e. 100% SHALLOW). GOAL:
Local Website Optimization | | Cesare.Marchetti
We would like to rank for the branded keyword only (—> more generic search intent) but as well as for branded keyword + cities (—> more transactional search intent) combinations. REMARK: It would make little sense in my opinion to develop the individual contact pages (for every city) to „full“ pages with real content as there isn’t really specific content for the differenct cities to add. OPTIONS:
1) HOME page: target for the branded keyword CONTACT pages (one for each city): target for the branded keyword + city name HOME page: target for the branded keyword + all the city names CONTACT pages (one for each city): : NO keyword targeting at all HOME page: target for the branded keyword + different city names CONTACT pages (one for each city): target for the branded keyword + city name Add CANONICAL tag to main page ???!!!??? What is best practise? What would you recommend? Is there another solution? I really would like to know your opinion. Thanks a lot for your hints in advance.
Cheers,

Omitted Results city-queries for the same brand on different subdomains?
I've noticed on a few occasions where two subdomains share the same brand and are also attempting to rank for phrases specific to one city - the stronger subdomain tends to send the other subdomain to the "omitted search results" for those city specific queries. The subdomains do tend to have some duplicate content that they share but if the two pages on the different subdomains are unique for the search phrase in question wouldn't Google choose to surface both results? Or is this a question of domain diversity in the SERPs where the 2 results would just be too similar since they share the same root domain and have topically similar content? I've seen cases where they can share the first page of results but more often than not it seems that one is sent to the "omitted results". Any thoughts on strategy in this situation? The companies being described end up wanting to rank for the same city because they both serve a portion of the city in case anyone is wondering.

Local Area SEO - Directions Page and Multiple Use of Direction pages
Hello, We are looking to focus on multiple local areas and it has been suggested one way to mention lots of different locations on pages without doing lists or using grey SEO practices is to create directions pages. We are trying this with a client who has 2 business at the same address. The layout is:- Introduction - 2-3 sentences Directions by Car Park Parking info Directions by Public Transports Closing - 3-4 sentences - using clients keywords The hope is the having locations/areas and the clients keywords on the same page will capture some of the local areas with the clients keywords. I have some questions:- 1. If we use the same directions text and just change the opening and closing paragraphs on the different website will this be enough to not have a duplicate content issue. 2. Are the directions pages the best way to capture keywords and local area/locations on the same page. 3. Is there anything I am missing or could do instead? Looking forward to everyone's input....

Google ranking wrong page
I have a client where google is ranking the homepage for a term that I want a specific landing page to rank for. The landing page is filled with great keyword focused content, gets a perfect score on the moz keyword target grader. And the home page is not even about the keyword it is ranking for. Any advice on how to get google to stop ranking the wrong page?

Canonical for 80-90% duplicate content help
Hi . I seem to spend more time asking questions atm. I have a site I have revamped www.themorrisagency.co.uk I am working through sorting out the 80-90% duplicated content that just replaces a spattering of geographical and band styles eg: http://www.themorrisagency.co.uk/band-hire/greater-manchester/ 'manchester' being changed to : http://www.themorrisagency.co.uk/band-hire/oxfordshire/ etc So I am going through this slow but essential process atm. I have a main http://www.themorrisagency.co.uk/band-hire/ page My question is: Would it be sensible to (using Yoast SEO plug in) use a canonical redirect as a temp solution from these dup pages to http://www.themorrisagency.co.uk/band-hire/ Rather than remove them What are your thoughts as I am aware that the damage using a rel= could make it worse. Thanks as always Daniel
