Killed by penguin 3
-
So with the update to penguin 3.0 last week we notice that some clients have been significantly hit by the update. How do we rectify the situation for the poor links that are on the site.
We have used open site explorer and Google webmaster to try and identify which are the bad links to try and remove.
Now we can spot that some inbound links are from directories that may be perceived as low value/spam, but could not be sure what is affecting the ranking. The vast majority of these links are historical prior to inheriting this client recently and so do not have any logins to remove the links (if there are logins). These appear to be placed by teams outsourced in India. We would suspect that no site owner would spend the time removing links from the site any way.
How do we recover from the penguin hit. Is it just a case of trying to identify ones that we suspect could be perceived as spam and ask for these to be disavowed by Google? Do we contact all the sites to ask them to be removed and/or do we just push ahead with more engaging white hat methods of social SEO?
Are we likely to recover in the short term or be permanently hit. The site is for a small business with no more than 800 monthly hits so this fall from grace off very good front page positions is going to hit our client very hard even if the sins are from a previous business.
Any thoughts and suggestions PLEASE HELP

Thanks for the responses.
Looks like bit of a tough road ahead, but long term will be much for the better in cleaning up the (off)site.
The disavow exercise has been interesting in getting to review links in placed. There have been some strange links placed and very difficult to contact some websites to get them removed, but will try.
All the very best

Google is a bit secretive and hasn't let a lot slip out yet. My best guess would be when they next do an update if you have removed all the bad links you have the potential to increase, but this would be if Google thought you had cleaned up your bad links.
-
I use some software called ahrefs to get the full list of back links - even WMTs doesnt allow you to download the full list'

You could in theory have a link from a DA of 10 and be a great link, DA isn't really a great indicator - you could also have a link from a DA of 70+ and be a bad link. Check out these great articles:
http://moz.com/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links
http://moz.com/blog/category/link-building
But basically links need to be organic and natural, so if you have lots that are from forum signatures / comments, on websites outside your niche. If you sell garden furniture and have a lot of links sites about shoes for example, the odd one could be seen as relevant, but in general these aren't natural. You basically need to go to every page that is link to you and see if the link is relevant on the page, does it look natural and add value - or does it seem like it was just added in for the sake of a link.
- For disavow you simply upload a file, please keep this master file when uploaded as if you ever want to update this you need to include all previous bad links, as they don't keep an historical record and just use the latest file.
You only need to show evidence if you have a penalty in WMTs and are trying to have it removed.

In response to #1, unfortunately the answer is its impossible to know. We've had campaigns where disavowing links brought near immediate results, but we've also seen some that took months to correct.
As for #3, its more of a judgement call than a hard line on DA. As with all SEO, if there is good quality content on the page, then its a fine link to keep. If it looks borderline, probably better off disavowing it (better safe than sorry).
-
Thanks for getting back to us, really usefull and leads to several questions (sorry)
-
Your response implies will we only recover once links are removed/disavowed and the next update is in place. is this correct of do we see results once we have fixed the rot.
-
How do we get a FULL link list, even Open site explorer does not seem to do a full list.
-
How do we know which links affect us, i.e. is domain authority of the linking page relevant, if so what level would be acceptable. Most are above 25 DA that show in open site and would think this is OK?
-
Not having to disavow anything before, by showing evidence does that mean passing copies of email. How long after requesting to remove a link do we go and look to disavow in webmaster. getting links added can take upto 6 months so getting rid of them I am sure could take longer without fully knowing they are going to remove them anyway.

Hi
Good news - you can recover, the bad news - you have a lot of hard work to do, and when you will recover I don't know, Google hasn't yet confirmed how frequently the updates will roll.
First of all. Do a FULL link analysis and what ever links look unnatural and fake - disavow them straight away.
If you have a penalty you must show evidence you have tried to contact the webmaster's to get the links removed. Try to contact as many as possible and then do a disavow - the sooner the better.
Unfortunately, all you can do is hard work. Even if you did purely white hat going forward (and most sites I would say do Grey hat in my honest opinion, sending products out for review and a link, in my eyes is grey hat - but I digress), you still wouldn't recover.
The site is basically now on sinking sand any and good building you put on top is going to sink and be a waste of time, until you have sorted out the foundations (i.e. removed the bad links).
Sorry to say, this client is going to be taking up quite a bit of your time in the coming weeks, but you can be the good agency. Sit down with them and clearly explain everything what is wrong, what the previous agency / in house teams have done wrong and how your going to fix it. Then explain once you have fixed the issues, you are going to be good and do white hat techniques so that they never get penalised again - potential client for life. Put in the effort now and they will keep coming back.
Hope this is helpful.

Anyone seem anything from penguin yet?
I know its early days and even the wonderful Dr Pete said it will take a few days to notice anything, but has anyone seen anything. I've not seen any rise in traffic yet, but none of my ranking tracking tools have ran yet. Anyone seen anything, are you expecting to see any?

Penguin: Is there a "safe threshold" for commercial links?
Hello everyone, Here I am with a question about Penguin. I am asking to all Penguin experts on these forums to help me understand if there is a "safe" threshold of unnatural links under which we can have peace of mind. I really have no idea about that, I am not an expert on Penguin nor an expert of unnatural back link profiles. I have a website with about 84% natural links and 16% affiliate/commercial links. Should I be concerned about possibly being penalized by an upcoming Penguin update? So far, I have never been hit by any previous Penguin released, but... just in case, you experts, do you know what's the "threshold" of unnatural links that shouldn't be exceeded? Or, in your experience, what's the classic threshold over which Google can penalize a website for unnatural back link profile? Thank you in advance to anyone helping me on this research!

Negative SEO from Spammers Killing Client Rankings
Hi - I have identified a client website which was; a ) hacked and had several fraudulent pages added e.g. www.xxx.com/images/uggaustralia.html added which have 301 redirect links to another fraudulent websites. b) had an auto generated back link campaign (over 12k back links at present) with targeted anchor text at cheap ugg boots, ugg sale etc. I've removed the dodgy redirect web pages and also undertook a link audit using Google WMT, OSE and Seo Majestic and have disavowed all the spammy links at domain level. Consequently my client has dropped from top three for the key phrase to #9. Google WMT now sees ugg boots uk, ugg boots sale etc. as some of the most popular anchor text for the site even though it's blatantly obvious that the site has nothing to do with Ugg boots. No manual webspam penalties are in place however the auto generated anchor text campaign is still ongoing and is generating more spammy links back to non existent web pages - which still Google appears to be picking up. Question is - how long do you reckon it will take for the links to disappear and is there anything I can speed Google along as this issue if not of my making? p.s. For the record I've found at least 500 sites that have been targeted by this same campaign as well.

My Penguin Recovery Attempt
So I have decided today to attempt to beat the odds and try and do a full recovery from the Penguin Update. I am going to create a Google Doc in which I will make public and link at the end of this post for all of you to see. I am going to meticulously go through a massive back link audit of my site and try to see if I can recover from my loss of some of my main keywords back from April 24th. I want to clarify that I DID NOT get effected from Penguin 2.0, but I did from 1.0 and have not recovered since. I have to be honest I feel like I have done everything up to now, but I realized I needed to make this a very long journey into a massive audit into my back link profile which contains thousands of back links which I have been honestly avoiding. I just want to see if I put the work, I will see the results and maybe it can help others I will document everything I do in detail as well as dates when I do them. I'm sure there will be plenty of coffee fueled nights of Jibber-Jabber...and I apologize for that ahead of time. I hope at the end there is light and can shed some on others. I am starting with a blank canvas, so keep checking back on my progress. I generally work at night so you will see most changes in the morning. Here is the link to my Doc - http://bit.ly/11dUkzc Wish Me Luck

Month old site and alreasdy ranks 3 for competitive keyword
I know this individual does this with several sites and then offers them for sale to his competitors. Obviously spammy thru and thru, but how can google reward a site thats not even two months old, with 1900 + links with a ranking of #3 for a highly competitive keyword? Please dont post the actual name or url of the website as we dont want to give him any more credit but this blows my mind as he has done this several times with other sites and never gets penalized. http://tinyurl.com/b9jysa5 Any ideas as to how he can accomplish this besides almost 2000 links in less than 2 months? How is that even remotely natural? I know his other sites have been reported to google but they never did anything about it. Thanks for any feedback.

Penguin link removal what would you do?
Hi Over the last 4 months I have been trying to remove as many poor quality links as possible in the hope this will help us recover. I have come across some site's that the page our back-link is on has been de-indexed, goggle shows this when I look at the cached page... 404. <ins>That’s an error.</ins> The requested URL /search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GGNI_enGB482GB482&q=cache:http%3A%2F%2Fforom.eovirtual.com%2Fviewtopic.php%3Ff%3D4%26t%3D84 was not found on this server. <ins>That’s all we know.</ins> If goggle is showing this message do I have to still try to remove the link, or is it a case goggle has already dismissed the link?

Please help? unique penguin problem with a blogger template
**Can any one help? The problem: **There is a free blogger template on this site http://btemplates.com/2012/blogger-template-crystalweb/ that has a anchor text link to our site using the keyword "wholesale" in the footer, that is the main course of our site being hit with a penguin penalty.**The story so far:**On the 24th April our website dropped out of the serps for our main keywords, traffic has been down 90% ever since, we are a small family run business that relies on the inter-net and goggle for our site to work. Goggle organic serps is about 30% of our turnover and have already had no choice to let 3 people go, problem now is we are left with Me, my Dad and Mum, Both my Brothers and nephew and my wife and my brothers wife so unless we can turn this around I can see us going bankrupt.**What I have done so far:**After the 24th I have learnt a lot about S.E.O , and managed to remove 99% of all bad/spammy links and have now come to a dead end. I have been promoting what we do as a company and promoting our blog over the last 4 months and also built a great twitter/facebook following with lots of re-tweets and shares which we have made some good sales from. We have re-designed most parts of our website and managed to up the conversion rate by 300% We have worked on all aspects of our website to make sure we have little/no duplicate content , have worked on ways to speed up the site and fixed most dead links/404 problems.<var id="yiv904548185yui-ie-cursor"></var>**Now onto our main problem:**After a few weeks of removing links I found a blogger page that kept coming up with the same link, after some detective work I found the template was originally designed by http://www.deluxetemplates.com/ after a few emails we found out that someone paid deluxetemplates to add the link to the site, I'm guessing it was a S.E.O. company we used for 2 years, but they did not admit to this and could not help. A guy called Klodian from deluxtemplates was really helpful and helped remove from his site, also he agreed to a cost of $250 to remove all the pictures on his server to force the blogger's to update, this is what the template from deluxtemplates now looks like vozconuncion.blogspot.co.uk .Now this was only helping fix this issue a small bit as a different site called btemplates also used the template and added it to there website as a free download and hosted the template pictures on there servers. I have emailed a few times, I have sent them twitter messages and also added messages to lots of there templates on there site in the hope they can help, I have also contacted the owner directly on his goggle+1 page but no reply. This template is being downloaded once or twice a day, with no way to get hold of the blogger's using it. As a last resort I offered the owner $1000 to help me remove the template but still no luck.Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve? we are willing to pay to resolve this and will do what ever needs to be done.Thank-you for taking the time to read.Karl.

Penguin Update and Infographic Link Bait
Is it still ok to use infographics for link bait now that the penguin update has rolled out? Are there any techniques that should be avoided when promoting an infographic? Thanks
