Moz crawl duplicate pages issues
-
Hi
According to the moz crawl on my website I have in the region of 800 pages which are considered internal duplicates. I'm a little puzzled by this, even more so as some of the pages it lists as being duplicate of another are not.
For example, the moz crawler considers page B to be a duplicate of page A in the urls below: Not sure on the live link policy so ive put a space in the urls to 'unlive' them.
Page A http:// nuchic.co.uk/index.php/jeans/straight-jeans.html?manufacturer=3751
Page B http:// nuchic.co.uk/index.php/catalog/category/view/s/accessories/id/92/?cat=97&manufacturer=3603
One is a filter page for Curvety Jeans and the other a filter page for Charles Clinkard Accessories. The page titles are different, the page content is different so Ive no idea why these would be considered duplicate. Thin maybe, but not duplicate.
Like wise, pages B and C are considered a duplicate of page A in the following
Page A http:// nuchic.co.uk/index.php/bags.html?dir=desc&manufacturer=4050&order=price
Page B http:// nuchic.co.uk/index.php/catalog/category/view/s/purses/id/98/?manufacturer=4001
Page C http:// nuchic.co.uk/index.php/coats/waistcoats.html?manufacturer=4053
Again, these are product filter pages which the crawler would have found using the site filtering system, but, again, I cannot find what makes pages B and C a duplicate of A.
Page A is a filtered result for Great Plains Bags (filtered from the general bags collection). Page B is the filtered results for Chic Look Purses from the Purses section and Page C is the filtered results for Apricot Waistcoats from the Waistcoat section.
I'm keen to fix the duplicate content errors on the site before it goes properly live at the end of this month - that's why anyone kind enough to check the links will see a few design issues with the site - however in order to fix the problem I first need to work out what it is and I can't in this case.
Can anyone else see how these pages could be considered a duplicate of each other please? Checking ive not gone mad!!
Thanks,
Carl

These days, content is king. It looks like there are a lot of similar internal links in the source code of these pages. When you have thin/or no content, your internal link profile stands out a lot more.
What helped me overcome this for my company is focusing on aggregating customer reviews and having my customer service team generate unique product descriptions. Social media was great for reviews. We offered small coupons at first, and now our customers want to send reviews. Unique product descriptions might be tough for clothes, but, it isn't impossible.
Having a ridiculously duplicated internal link profile and no content is almost as detrimental to your organic rankings as a spammy external linking profile. You want to look like an eCommerce site and not an online catalog.

Hi Adam,
Thanks for the response. I tested the canonical side of things but was finding that it was stopping the filtered pages being indexed. While we could get 'Dresses' page indexed we couldn't get 'Black Dresses' 'X retailer brand Dresses' etc indexed. We found this a bit of an issue. On the filtering page the tag always pointed back to the category root.
We are using an seo plugin for Magento so maybe i will need to go back to the dev and ask them. I accept that not putting canonical tag on the filtering could lead to internal duplicate content issues if a product can be found a dresses, red dresses, x brand dresses, x brand red dresses and via price.
Even though the side is still a work in progress we are already seeing the filtered pages getting indexed and ranking fairly well. So, for example (I don't think we rank for this one) we are ranking for term such as Black Size 12 Evening Dress. Sure, this term won't get millions of searches but long tail converts very well. As much as I would love to be no1 for Dresses we are not going to get there for a long long time. Especially given the No1 brand for the term is DA 86 and has hundreds of thousands of links and over 2.1m G+ shares.
We are in a tricky position with the website. Normally we could rank for the filtered terms by product page easy enough, however with all the product pages being pulled externally we need to find an alternative.

Hello Carl!
So I checked out the pages you listed and I've had similar issues on my e-Commerce stores. There isn't much text on e-Commerce site pages and there tends to be a ton of links so that always causes a problem for me. E-commerce stores and duplicate content go hand in hand, unfortunately.
I would suggest starting with adding canonical tags into your meta data. There's a few settings in Magento you can turn on and that should take care of some of the problem. Here's a good resource http://www.magentocommerce.com/knowledge-base/entry/canonical-meta-tag
From there you might want to consider making your meta descriptions on the products a bit more unique. Changing out one word (the product name) doesn't make it different or a non-duplicate. When the content is super thin, it's harder to make the pages, titles, and descriptions unique to search engines. With e-Commerce product pages, I understand the trouble with having text on filter pages…it's just not practical and doesn't look right. But it's important to optimize where you can…the meta descriptions. Here's another resource for that http://moz.com/ugc/our-forgotten-friend-the-meta-description
Hope that helps!

Might be worth me adding that I'm aware that all the product pages are duplicate content from other websites. The shop section of the website is an affiliate store. However, all the product pages are set as noindex to the search engines as a result of this. The internal link between the category pages and the product pages will be made nofollow in the coming days. If the engines cannot index the individual products then little point wasting bandwidth on them crawling 200,000 products!

Canonical tag on webstore products to avoid Duplicate Page Content ?
Hi, I would like to have an opinion on what how we are planning to solve the issue with Duplicate Page Contents that MOZ PRO is showing us. MOZ Pro is showing us a lot of pages with duplicate content as High Priority Issue. Mainly the problem is with products which have very few differences between them, e.g. pink bike model X and red bike model X. So we decided to implement a canonical tag on these products, and the pink bike model X will now have a canonical pointing to the red bike model X. So hopefully we will be ranking higher with our red bike model X and our pink bike model X will disapear from the index. Am I right ? Is it a good practice, since we will loose long tails indexes? I check each canonical in the Search Console, and we have extremely few searched for "pink bike model X" most of searches are "bike model X". Thank you in advance for your opinion. Isabelle

Why does one page rank while a similar page doesn't?
We have a blog post (actually several of them that have the same SEO characteristics) that brings a fair amount of traffic to our site (relatively speaking), and according to Google Webmaster Tools it averages in the top 10 in SERPs for various terms. This page has no external links to it, and very few internal links pointing to it. When I run Moz's On-Page Grader for the various keywords it ranks for, the page get's an F on all of them. It was not optimized for any keyword, and it isn't our best content; it was a blog post written a few years ago and forgotten about and was never promoted in any way. The topic does happen to be about something that people search for frequently. According to the keyword difficulty tool, all of the keywords it ranks for have 40-45% difficulty. We have lots of other pages on our site that we have tried to optimize and that get A's and B's in On-Page Grader, that have both internal (from the home page and main menu) and external links pointing at them, etc, but they don't rank well at all. Keyword difficulty for these keywords is in the same range, from 37 - 53%. Why does this one page rank so well when the other pages don't? Additionally, we have been looking at a competitor who has a page that ranks #1 in universal results for numerous keywords according to SEMRush, yet the page gets an F On-page Grader for those keywords. The page has 3 links to it, all from the same domain and it has a very low domain and page authority. The Domain Authority of this page is 47 and the page authority is 33 according to Open Site Explorer (compared with our DA of 30, and PA of 1), and the social metrics are a bit higher than ours, but neither has a lot (they may have 15 likes to our 10). Why does this page rank so well for them? How can we get our Page Authority higher? Thanks for any and all help.

Page with "Missing Title Tag" isn't a page
Hello, I am going through the various errors that the Moz Pro Crawl report and some non-existent pages keep coming up in the report. For example, one error category is "Missing Title Tag" with one page identified. But this page http://www.immigroup.com/news/“http%3A/crs.yorku.ca”?page=2 isn't real. It would have been a 404 were there not a redirect for everything that is /news/gobbledygook to /news. So my question is: when moz (or GA for that matter) identifies these pages as "real" and having errors, do I need to take this seriously? And what do I do about it? Thanks! George

What's my best strategy for Duplicate Content if only www pages are indexed?
The MOZ crawl report for my site shows duplicate content with both www and non-www pages on the site. (Only the www are indexed by Google, however.) Do I still need to use a 301 redirect - even if the non-www are not indexed? Is rel=canonical less preferable, as usual? Facts: the site is built using asp.net the homepage has multiple versions which use 'meta refresh' tags to point to 'default.asp'. most links already point to www Current Strategy: set the preferred domain to 'www' in Google's Webmaster Tools. set the Wordpress blog (which sits in a /blog subdirectory) with rel="canonical" to point to the www version. Ask programmer to add 301 redirects from the non-www pages to the www pages. Ask programmer to use 301 redirects as opposed to meta refresh tags & point all homepage versions to www.site.org. Does this strategy make the most sense? (Especially considering the non-indexed but existent non-www pages.) Thanks!!

Functionality of SEOmoz crawl page reports
I am trying to find a way to ask SEOmoz staff to answer this question because I think it is a functionality question so I checked SEOmoz pro resources. I also have had no responses in the Forum too it either. So here it is again. Thanks much for your consideration! Is it possible to configure the SEOMoz Rogerbot error-finding bot (that make the crawl diagnostic reports) to obey the instructions in the individual page headers and http://client.com/robots.txt file? For example, there is a page at http://truthbook.com/quotes/index.cfm month=5&day=14&year=2007 that has – in the header -
Moz Pro | | jimmyzig
<meta name="robots" content="noindex"> </meta name="robots" content="noindex"> This page is themed Quote of the Day page and is duplicated twice intentionally at http://truthbook.com/quotes/index.cfm?month=5&day=14&year=2004 and also at http://truthbook.com/quotes/index.cfm?month=5&day=14&year=2010 but they all have <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> in them. So Google should not see them as duplicates right. Google does not in Webmaster Tools.</meta name="robots" content="noindex"> So it should not be counted 3 times? But it seems to be? How do we gen a report of the actual pages shown in the report as dups so we can check? We do not believe Google sees it as a duplicate page but Roger appears too. Similarly, one can use http://truthbook.com/contemplative_prayer/ , here also the http://truthbook.com/robots.txt tells Google to stay clear. Yet we are showing thousands of dup. page content errors when Google Webmaster tools as shown only a few hundred configured as described. Anyone? Jim0 -
Why aren't canonical tags reducing duplicate page title/content?
We have canonical tags set up for a feature page on one of our sites. This site has an image gallery controlled by javascript. To aid the user experience the image can also be specified by a URL parameter (the javascript also uses this URL to fetch the images). The SEOMoz report complains that the links to these images have duplicate page titles and content. To try and combat this we set canonical tags to point only to the original page, without the slideshow parameter. e.g. http://www.example.com/feature-page/ http://www.example.com/feature-page/?slideshow=1 -> canonical tag set to http://www.example.com/feature-page/ http://www.example.com/feature-page/?slideshow=2 -> canonical tag set to http://www.example.com/feature-page/ The latest SEOMoz report has come back and the errors still exist. What can we do to remove these error messages? Thanks

Why is Roger crawling pages that are disallowed in my robots.txt file?
I have specified the following in my robots.txt file: Disallow: /catalog/product_compare/ Yet Roger is crawling these pages = 1,357 errors. Is this a bug or am I missing something in my robots.txt file? Here's one of the URLs that Roger pulled: <colgroup><col width="312"></colgroup>
