Google News we were dropped and need help finding ot why
-
Hi i have a site called in2town lifestyle magazine http://www.in2town.co.uk/ and up until two months ago we were with google news and for a long time. But then all of a sudden we were dropped which left us with no confidence about our site and led us to make changes to the site, some good and some bad to try and find out what was wrong with our site and why we were dropped.
We have now been concentrating on sorting the site out which has led in a drop in traffic due to not updating it as we should because we are more concerned in trying to make it a quality lifestyle magazine and get back in google as well as making it a good experience for our readers..
I would like your help and finding out what you feel is wrong with our site so we can then work on it and change it and try and find out what went wrong with google news.
we have spent years on the site but now we have gone in the wrong direction because we were more worried about google news.
If you can advise us on how we should change the site and sort the site out and make it into the professional site it was once more then that would be great.

In addition to EGOL on the news front, your news needs to be unique. Aggregate or scraped news won't last long in google.
With respect to the site, are you dealing with duplicate content? After taking a large phrase from a new news item and wrapping it in quotes, the SERP page shows a large number of pages with different titles/urls.
Without knowing how your site is structured it's a bit difficult to give specific advice, but run the SEOmoz custom crawler over your site and see how much duplicate content you have or are creating.

If you have been dropped by google news it is possible that you were not a qualified news site publishing in their recommended format. You need to...
-
be a "news organization"
-
have multiple authors
-
be the original source for any images, text, videos, etc. displayed on your site
-
have URLs in their recommended format

Https pages indexed but all web pages are http - please can you offer some help?
Dear Moz Community, Please could you see what you think and offer some definite steps or advice.. I contacted the host provider and his initial thought was that WordPress was causing the https problem ?: eg when an https version of a page is called, things like videos and media don't always show up. A SSL certificate that is attached to a website, can allow pages to load over https. The host said that there is no active configured SSL it's just waiting as part of the hosting package just in case, but I found that the SSL certificate is still showing up during a crawl. It's important to eliminate the https problem before external backlinks link to any of the unwanted https pages that are currently indexed. Luckily I haven't started any intense backlinking work yet, and any links I have posted in search land have all been http version.I checked a few more url's to see if it’s necessary to create a permanent redirect from https to http. For example, I tried requesting domain.co.uk using the https:// and the https:// page loaded instead of redirecting automatically to http prefix version. I know that if I am automatically redirected to the http:// version of the page, then that is the way it should be. Search engines and visitors will stay on the http version of the site and not get lost anywhere in https. This also helps to eliminate duplicate content and to preserve link juice. What are your thoughts regarding that?As I understand it, most server configurations should redirect by default when https isn’t configured, and from my experience I’ve seen cases where pages requested via https return the default server page, a 404 error, or duplicate content. So I'm confused as to where to take this. One suggestion would be to disable all https since there is no need to have any traces to SSL when the site is even crawled ?. I don't want to enable https in the htaccess only to then create a https to http rewrite rule; https shouldn't even be a crawlable function of the site at all.RewriteEngine OnRewriteCond %{HTTPS} offor to disable the SSL completely for now until it becomes a necessity for the website.I would really welcome your thoughts as I'm really stuck as to what to do for the best, short term and long term.Kind Regards

Help with Country selector pop up
Hi, We have just taken off our auto redirect on our sites so we now have separate domains - .co.uk, .de, .com, .fr, .eu, .com.au We are about to install a country selector that pops up. Its bit more of pros and cons answer I am after So the 2 options we considering are as follows The more complicated one with the following functionality across all sites in the case the example is having a French IP So I have a French IP – I arrive on French site = no pop up I arrive on UK site = pop up with text saying “you are on the UK site” and generates 2 button one saying“continue” and the other saying “take me to Tidy-books.fr” I arrive on the USA site = pop up with text saying you are on the US site and generates 2 button one saying “continue” and the other say “take me to Tidy-books.fr” I arrive on the German site = pop up with text saying you are on the DE site and generates 2 button one saying “continue” and the other say “take me to Tidy-books.fr” I arrive on the Australian site = pop up with text saying you are on the DE site and generates 2 button one saying “continue” and the other say “take me to Tidy-books.fr” I arrive on the European site = pop up with text saying you are on the EU site and generates 2 button one saying “continue” and the other say “take me to Tidy-books.fr” The other simpler option I have French Ip 1. I visit the French site no pop up 2. I visit any other countries site and a pop up with a all our flags appear allowing the person to select which country they wish to go to Hope that makes sense any suggestions etc would very much appreciated Thanks

HTTPS redirecting to subdomain; do I need to 301 to HTTP first?
Hello there, quick question on HTTPS downgrade to HTTP. Originally, full site was HTTPS. Redesign eliminated need for secure layer. Site currently has https 301'd to sub.domain.com. Ideally, site would live at domain.com, but with the old site having been indexed https, the security warning triggers when you visit, hence the 301 to a subdomain. Thinking possible solutions here are to a) add back in secure layer or b) 301 all old https pages to new http pages. Have I overlooked something? With (a), I will see no SEO impact, correct? With (b), can I expect impact similar to a relaunch? Have seen a lot of chatter that there is some impact in switching http to https, but not much the other way. Any help much appreciated!

I can’t understand, please help?
Our old SEO built a lot of bad links (web 2.0, article ect) and in April of 2012 we received the dreaded Google Webmaster Tools notice of detected unnatural links to XXXXXXXX After 4 requests and disavowing all of the links he created we have finally received Reconsideration request for xxxx Manual spam action revoked The only problem is that this feels more of a penalty than when the received the detected links email? Everything across the board as dropped, I know we added more and more links to the disavow but everything has been going up with the quality we have been putting out until today when we received the manual action revoked. Has anyone experienced this, I feel like I wish we were still under the penalty as the rankings have dived.
