Pagination on a product page with reviews spread out on multiple pages
-
Our current product pages markup only have the canonical URL on the first page (each page loads more user reviews). Since we don't want to increase load times, we don't currently have a canonical view all product page. Do we need to mark up each subsequent page with its own canonical URL?
My understanding was that canonical and rel next prev tags are independent of each other. So that if we mark up the middle pages with a paginated URL, e.g:
Product page #1http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692"/>http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=2" />**Product page #2 **http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=2"/>http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692" />http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=3" />Would mean that each canonical page would suggest to google another piece of unique content, which this obviously isn't. Is the PREV NEXT able to "override" the canonical and explain to Googlebot that its part of a series? Wouldn't the canonical then be redundant? Thanks

Hi Don,
Normally it's not really necessary to put a canonical on each the pages with different pageid - the most important reason to put a canonical url on a page is to let Google know that if the same content is published under different url's which url needs to be indexed. In your example - a canonical url on http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=3 would be needed if the same content would also be available under http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=3&sessionid=123456 (or any other additional parameter). Strictly speaking the canonical is not to indicate Google that the content is unique but to indicate on which preferred url you want the content to be indexed. That is also the reason why you can implement both together.
If you check the example from Google - they use the rel next/previous to indicate that the different pages belong together - the canonical is basically used to indicate that the session id needs to be ignored when indexing the page.
If you are sure that there is only one version of http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=3 the canonical url is not really necessary. Note that e-commerce platforms have a tendency to add additional parameters to url's depending on the view - example when sorting on price etc - if this is the case the canonical would be needed.
Hope this helps,
Dirk

Hi Dirk,
Thanks for the answer but I'm still a tiny bit confused.
Currently we only have the Product.aspx?p=2692 first page including a canonical link, the rest of the variations don't have canonicals, ex:
Product page #1 http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692"/> http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=2" />
**Product page #2 **http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692" /> http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=3" />
Should we go ahead and add a canonical link for these pages with each of the unique pageid which specifies the page number? Because that was always my understanding of the Google support page for pagination. But then like I said we are basically telling Google that these pages are all unique, when if fact just the additional 10 reviews on them is new content.

Hi,
If you want all pages with the same product id p=2692 and different &pageid=x to be considered as one big page your implementation is correct. Canonicals can be used in parallel with rel next/previous. The example you give is quite similar to the example given by Google: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1663744?hl=en (example at the bottom of the page). The canonical you use on the pages aren't really necessary, but they don't hurt either so you can leave them there.
The one thing you have to avoid when mixing canonicals & rel next/previous is when you implement it like this:
**Product page #2 ** http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692"/>
http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692" /> http://www.example.co.uk/Product.aspx?p=2692&pageid=3" /> => in that case you would be sending mixed signals to Google - on one hand indicating that all the pages with different pageid's should be considered as one big page & on the other hand saying that Google should only index the first page as the pages with different pageid's are duplicates.Hope this clarifies,
Dirk

Redirecting homepage to internal page (2nd Tier page)
We are planning to experiment redirecting our homepage to one of the 2nd tier page. I mean....example.com to example.com/page. We need this page to rank well, but it doesn't have much internal links or external back-links, so we opt for this redirect. Advantage with this page is, it has "keyword" we want to rank for in URL. "page" in example.com/page. Will this help or hurt us in SEO? I think we are missing keyword in our root domain, so interested to highlight this page. Thanks, Satish

SEO impact of mouse over text on product page
Hi, we recently improved our product page to show more color options, like this http://www.prams.net/knorr-baby-voletto-sport-pram-stroller-reversible-seat-green-a?inref=home-left In order to improve the seo, we expanded our rich snippets the following way we added all color options, skus and prices as "items offered" we are showing the highest and lowest price range and eliminated the base price https://developers.google.com/structured-data/testing-tool/ Google now shows the price range in the rich snippet. The questions is: as the user see the original color, the price and the sku only when mousing over the small images. We are worried that this could be treated a "hidden text". Does anybody have experience in this matter or a way a to solve it better? Thanks in advance Dieter 8WthtQY

Sort term product pages and fast indexing - XML sitemaps be updated daily, weekly, etc?
Hi everyone, I am currently working on a website that the XML sitemap is set to update weekly. Our client has requested that this be changed to daily. The real issue is that the website creates short term product pages (10-20 days) and then the product page URL's go 404. So the real problem is quick indexing not daily vs weekly sitemap. I suspect that daily vs weekly sitemaps may help solve the indexing time but does not completely solve the problem. So my question for you is how can I improve indexing time on this project? The real problem is how to get the product pages indexed and ranking before the 404 page shows u?. . Here are some of my initial thoughts and background on the project. Product pages are only available for 10 to 20 days (Auction site).Once the auction on the product ends the URL goes 404. If the pages only exist for 10 to 20 days (404 shows up when the auction is over), this sucks for SEO for several reasons (BTW I was called onto the project as the SEO specialist after the project and site were completed). Reason 1 - It is highly unlikely that the product pages will rank (positions 1 -5) since the site has a very low Domain Authority) and by the time Google indexes the link the auction is over therefore the user sees a 404. Possible solution 1 - all products have authorship from a "trustworthy" author therefore the indexing time improves. Possible solution 2 - Incorporate G+ posts for each product to improve indexing time. There is still a ranking issue here since the site has a low DA. The product might appear but at the bottom of page 2 or 1..etc. Any other ideas? From what I understand, even though sitemaps are fed to Google on a weekly or daily basis this does not mean that Google indexes them right away (please confirm). Best case scenario - Google indexes the links every day (totally unrealistic in my opinion), URL shows up on page 1 or 2 of Google and slowly start to move up. By the time the product ranks in the first 5 positions the auction is over and therefore the user sees a 404. I do think that a sitemap updated daily is better for this project than weekly but I would like to hear the communities opinion. Thanks

How to rank product pages?
Hi guys, Please advice me on something improving my product pages ranking. We are doing well for head terms, categories but not ranking for product pages. We have issues with product pages which I am think is hard to tackle. For instance we have duplicate products (different colors), duplicate content internally (colors) and from manufacturer websites. Product pages linked from sub-category i.e. Home > Category > Sub-Category (20 per page) using pagination for next 20 and so on. Product pages linked internally via widgets that says other Similar products, featured products etc. Another issue with our product pages is that we are using third party reviews platform and whenever users add reviews to product pages this platform creates an hyperlink to different anchors which is not relevant to product. Example - http://goo.gl/NUG652 Can somebody please give some advice on how to improve rankings for product pages. writing unique content for thousands of pages is not possible. Even our competitor not writing unique content.

Why Is Google Indexing These Product Pages On Shopify?
How can we communicate to Google the exact product pages we'd like indexed on our site? We're an apparel company that uses Shopify as our ecommerce platform. Website is sportiqe.com. Currently, Google is indexing all types of different pages on our site. **Example of a product page we want indexed: ** Product Page: sportiqe.com/products/PRODUCT-TITLE (Like This) **Examples of product pages being indexed: ** sportiqe.myshopify.com/products/PRODUCT-TITLE sportiqe.com/collections/COLLECTION-NAME/products/PRODUCT-TITLE See attached for an example of how two different "Boston Celtics Grateful Dead" shirts are being indexed. Any suggestions? We've used both Shopify and Google Webmaster tools to set our preferred domain (sportiqe.com). We've also added this snippet of code to our site three months ago thinking that would do the trick... {% if template == 'product' %}{% if collection %} {% endif %}{% endif %} sKwNZOl

Category Pages up - Product Pages down... what would help?
Hi I mentioned yesterday how one of our sites was losing rank on product pages. What steps do you take to improve the SERPS of product pages, in this case home/category/product is the tree. There isn't really any internal linking, except one link from the category page to each product, would setting up a host of internal links perhaps "similar products" linking them together be a place to start? How can I improve my ranking of these more deeply internal pages? Not just internal links?

How do I fix the error duplicate page content and duplicate page title?
On my site www.millsheating.co.uk I have the error message as per the question title. The conflict is coming from these two pages which are effectively the same page: www.millsheating.co.uk www.millsheating.co.uk/index I have added a htaccess file to the root folder as I thought (hoped) it would fix the problem but I doesn't appear to have done so. this is the content of the htaccess file: Options +FollowSymLinks RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^millsheating.co.uk RewriteRule (.*) http://www.millsheating.co.uk/$1 [R=301,L] RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.html\ HTTP/ RewriteRule ^index\.html$ http://www.millsheating.co.uk/ [R=301,L] AddType x-mapp-php5 .php

Privacy policy page
I only link to my privacy policy page from the homepage, but the privacy policy page has a pr4, while the main domain has a pr5. Using site:domain name the policy page is at the top of the 2nd page of google so it ranks high. I was thinking of either nofollowing the link or adding a (noindex, follow) directive on the policy page, until I saw some seo professional sites using rel=canonical on their policy pages that points to their policy page itself. Am I better off using the (noindex, follow) or rel=canonical = policy page ? thanks
