Is it detrimental to make a site wide change from .html to .shtml (all pages)?
-
We have an established website with decent domain authority. My developer inherited the site from another developer and is recommending that we convert all pages from the .html to the .shmtl From an SEO perspective, would this hurt us?
Also, if this is not an issue, would updating the canonical help us, or does the canonical setting only deal with the "www." vs. "non-www"?
Any insights will be appreciated greatly. Thanks!

If you have decent rankings already I would hesitate to do this. While your rankings will eventually come back to where they're at now, there will DEFINITELY be some time in the middle where you're not doing as well. The 301s suggested in other answers are a great (and necessary) idea.
If you don't HAVE to do this, I would question it as well. It will definitely affect your site.

Hi Barry,
Well from a marketing perspective I would always go back to your developer and say that it's not an option to change the URL structure only because of technical dependencies. You build up your reputation and with changing the URLs, even if you redirect them to the new location there always will be a certain loss in authority.

If you decide to go down this route the best way to minimise SEO impact would be to implement 301 redirects from the .html to the new .shtml.
Have a look at the Redirect While Changing File Extensions section on Moz's Guide to redirects here - http://moz.com/learn/seo/redirection
This page is well worth a read in order for you to get a better understanding but I thought I would draw your attention to this section to help put your mind at ease -
"There are multiple options for doing this, but in general, the 301 redirect is preferable for both users and search engines. Serving a 301 indicates to both browsers and search engine bots that the page has moved permanently. Search engines interpret this to mean that not only has the page changed location, but that the content—or an updated version of it—can be found at the new URL. The engines will carry any link weighting from the original page to the new URL"
In terms of what loss of value a 301 redirect will have no one is sure and what impact this will have. 301 redirects would be the best way to do what is being suggested by your developer with minimal seo impact. I think you might find this post interesting - http://moz.com/community/q/how-much-juice-do-you-lose-in-a-301-redirect
Hope this helps

Our protected pages 302 redirect to a login page if not a member. Is that a problem for SEO?
We have a membership site that has links out in our unprotected pages. If a non-member clicks on these links it sends a 302 redirect to the login / join page. Is this an issue for SEO? Thanks!

If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect?
If I want clean up my URLs and take the "www.site.com/page.html" and make it "www.site.com/page" do I need a redirect? If this scenario requires a 301 redirect no matter what, I might as well update the URL to be a little more keyword rich for the page while I'm at it. However, since these pages are ranking well I'd rather not lose any authority in the process and keep the URL just stripped of the ".html" (if that's possible). Thanks for you help! Micro-sites for Landing Pages?
We are working with a site that is difficult at best to update. The client intends to re-do the site in 18 months or so but needs to start generating more traffic (and sales) now. What are thoughts on creating landing pages as micro-sites that point to the current site conversion page as a stop gap? Beyond not sharing authority is there any known penalty? By the way they don't have tremendous ranking right now - often bottom of page two - and the micro-site won't duplicate any content.

What changes do i need to make to my site to get into google news
Hi, when we had the old design, we were in google news but then when we upgraded our site, we had a major problem which forced us to have to redesign our site. Since then we have not been included in google news and we would like to get back in. We only want to be in google news for the following page http://www.in2town.co.uk/Latest-News-Headlines But for some reason, no matter what we do we keep getting knocked back. I would love to know what we should be doing to get into google news and see what the problems are. We have moved to a bigger dedicated server to increase speed so i know it is not that. Any help would be great Also is there an alternative to google news that i can get our site into to generate traffic and to get our news stories straight out to people Hi, Thank you for your note. Please recommend a tool to list pages on my site.
I have taken a major hit from the latest update. Site has been online for 10 years, white hat SEO all the way but I do have some legacy pages were I would duplicate title or the description on a new page. Things are just unorganized currently and trying to find the best approach to organizing what I already have as well as track new content. I would like to have a tool that would basically extract a list of my current pages, the title tags and the description in an Excel file. Not sure how the pros organinze the SEO on a site but my biright idea is that I can have a large excel file with the pages listed so I can detect duplicate info. Site only has about 300 pages. Just regular php pages, no CMS. Thanks in advance!

New Domain Page 7 Google but Page 1 Bing & Yahoo
Hi just wondered what other people's experience is with a new domain. Basically have a client with a domain registered end of May this year, so less than 3 months old! The site ranks for his keyword choice (not very competitive), which is in the domain name. For me I'm not at all surprised with Google's low ranking after such a short period but quite surprsied to see it ranking page 1 on Bing and Yahoo. No seo work has been done yet and there are no inbound links. Anyone else have experience of this? Should I be surprised or is that normal in the other two search engines? Thanks in advance Trevor
