SEO question regarding rails app on www.site.com hosted on Heroku and www.site.com/blog at another host
-
Hi, I have a rails app hosted on Heroku (www.site.com) and would much prefer to set up a Wordpress blog using a different host pointing to www.site.com/blog, as opposed to using a gem within the actual app.
Whats are peoples thoughts regarding there being any ranking implications for implementing the set up as noted in this post on Stackoverflow:
"What I would do is serve your Wordpress blog along side your Rails app (so you've got a PHP and a Rails server running), and just have your
/blog
route point to a controller that redirects to your Wordpress app. Add something like this to yourroutes.rb
:_`get '/blog', to:'blog#redirect'`_
and then have a
redirect
method in yourBlogController
that simply does this:_`classBlogController<applicationcontrollerdef redirect="" redirect_to="" "url_of_wordpress_blog"endend<="" code=""></applicationcontrollerdef>`_
_Now you can point at
yourdomain.com/blogand it will take you to the Wordpress site._

Hi Kane, thanks for that. After a fair bit of trawling the internet I eventually found the article below which provides a great way of doing what I wanted. For anyone else with an application built on rails (of which I'm sure there are quite a few!) then the following might make a lot of sense to those wishing to utilize the benefits of a Wordpress blog platform: https://medium.com/@parterburn/wordpress-inside-a-ruby-on-rails-app-c324fbf39ad8

I don't understand how the Rails side of things work, but as long as the Wordpress URLs resolve to www.site.com/blog, and canonical tags reflect that, then you should be good.
For app companies where there won't be many links accumulated to the app itself, we often recommend running a complete Wordpress website at www.mysite.com, and running their actual app at app.mysite.com. This allows for easy content management by the marketing team, and marketing projects don't require lots of developer resources to get implemented. Not saying you should do this, but it can simplify things from a marketing & IT perspective. If there's a public facing version of the app, for example how Moz allows pages like https://mza.bundledseo.com/researchtools/ose/ to rank, then it can make more sense to run everything on a single subdomain.

What is the best SEO way to categorize products on an ecommerce site
What is the best way for SEO to set up categories for an ecommerce site selling beauty products. I have currently built my product categories so that if a person looks under the hydration category they find our body lotion, but also if they look under the body section of products they also will find the same body lotion. Is this a problem for SEO? I think it helps the customer find the product.

Standalone Hosting Plan vs Multisite Hosting Plan for SEO?
I am looking to migrate my current site to Siteground so I was having a chat with the operator who is telling me that if I was to sign up a new hosting plan I would get additional SEO benefits.. can anyone confirm or deny this? Also while on the question, do certain domain/hosting providers offer better SEO/SERP rankings and if they do can anyone recommend any in Australia in Particular? The domain is a .com.au website Transcript: me: i have a website that is registered at crazydomains and Wordpress files hosted on my friends server... what would I need to do to have the domain/hosting transfered to SG?

Siteground Operator:.: Let me take a look at the website and I will provide you with a solution 🙂
me: thx
Siteground Operator:.: In this case you have two choices, you can either host it on your current plan or create a new one just for it
Siteground Operator:.: Getting a new plan will be a better choice in terms of SEO and performance
Siteground Operator:.: But you can run it on your current GrowBig as well
me: why will taht give it better SEO?
Siteground Operator:.: Because it will have its own cPanel and it will be a primary domain for it, instead of having it setup as an addon
me: How does Google know what the primary or secondary domain on my hosting plan?
Siteground Operator:.: It doest, as your file location will be primarydomain.com/addonslot
Siteground Operator:.: Compared to primarydomain.com if you put it in its own hosting plan
me: So im struggling to understand how this affects my SEO?
Siteground Operator:.: SERP is based on a couple of things, one of which is domain authority (DO). This tends to be a lot harder to build up with addon domains compared to domains hosted in their own plans.
Siteground Operator:.: Additionally, you will have 2 sites under a single IP address which is not the optimal solution you want to get
me: What would need to be done as far as transfering the WP installation/files/databse etc
Siteground Operator:.: As its stored on a local host you will have to upload a backup copy of your files and db on our server and we will configure it for you.
System: me has ended the chat0 -

One platform, multiple niche sites: Worth $60/mo so each site has different class C?
Howdy all, The short of it is that I currently run a very niche business directory/review website and am in the process of expanding the system to support running multiple sites out of the same database/codebase. In a normal setup I'd just run all the sites off of the same server with all of them sharing a single IP address, but thanks to the wonders of the cloud, it would be fairly simple for me to run each site on it's own server at a cost of about $60/mo/site giving each site a unique IP on a unique c-block (in many cases a unique a-block even.) The ultimate goal here is to leverage the authority I've built up for the one site I currently run to help grow the next site I launch, and repeat the process. The question is: Is the SEO-value that the sites can pass to each other worth the extra cost and management overhead? I've gotten conflicting answers on this topic from multiple people I consider pretty smart so I'd love to know what other people say.

Howdy SEOmoz fans! (couldn't resist). I'm moving a wordpress blog from blog.domain.com to domain.com/blog. Trying to do it right the first time and cover all my bases. Issues I'm trying to handle correctly, in varying degrees of importance: External LInks Internal Links Google Friendly Traffic Routing in a dynamic environment (wordpress, 301, .htaccess, etc.) Thanks so much for any and all input!

Location of the web host provider and SEO
There has been several debates on the topic of the geo location of hosting provider and the impact on SEO and rankings. As a best practice, it is recommended to host in the same country you are targeting but are there any studies available that confirms the web hosting providers location influences rankings?
