Is there a downside to "closing" a domain and 301'ing to to your main domain?
-
We have a domain which was optimized for a specific keyword. It does very well for that keyword, but seems like it has in turn caused our primary domain to be penalized (back to page 3) for that same keyword (We think they've figured out the connection).
The optimized domain (only one page) has links on it to our primary domain, so I don't want to delete it as that's where our traffic currently comes from. But if I deleted it and 301'ed it to the primary domain is there a downside?
Alternatively I could disavow it, but if the search engines know it's the same owner will they hold that against all domains?
Or, alternatively again. Should I turn it into a more substantial website? Which could in turn remove it's "spamminess".
Any suggestions are welcomed!

What did the reviewer do? First, this is a person who has a lot of knowledge about me and my websites from doing work on them several times over a period of several years. I told the person to review the entire site and give me a list of the things that they would do if the website belonged to them. I offered access to analytics and would answer any questions.
I got back a big "to do list" that would significantly improve the site and require lots of work. Doing the tasks on the list cost many times more than the review. My problems have been solved but I am still working on the list because the list will improve the site.

In the past couple of years, I have had some challenges with my own sites. Each time I made up my mind what was wrong but also got paid opinions before I took actions. I wanted to get objective opinion - from smart people. Also, from experienced people who have looked at a lot more websites with problems than I have.
When a Google algo is causing problems for your website, nobody outside of Google can tell you with 100% certainty exactly what needs to be done, even people within Google can not tell you with 100% certainty. Why? Because there are many algos that can hit your site, all worked on and understood by different people - iff - they understand them.
So, anytime a website that is important in supporting a business needs help. I would always suggest outside advice - no matter who owns the site.

EGOL, along with a few others on this board, aided me in a similar situation, and no matter how many times I tried to ask the question by altering my language or spinning it in a different light the bottom line was simple, I needed outside assistance. If you are being penalized, there is a very different course of action to be taken given the circumstances. If the competing website is merely ranking better because it was optimized more effectively, that opens another avenue of action.
Again, these are questions that ultimately are much bigger than the forum can answer. In my situation we had 1500 domains that had been built into a link wheel. After a lot of analysis and slowly unraveling the web, we were/are left with 5 domains that are still active, and we have built a plan around 301s. A lot of content movement, content cutting, relinking, etc. Also building new links to replace a lot of the old ones that were removed.
This process has been going on for the past 8 months and continues to be monitored pretty consistently.
If you are not getting receiving Manual Actions from Google, and you are still making some income I personally would act swiftly but be smart. I'm happy to share our solution with you if you want as well!

I don't think that you will get anything but guesses to your questions because a variety of things could be causing this problem. I certainly would not take action on any advice given with multiple potential causes.
If this was my business, I would hire someone who understands the various Google algos that can change the rankings of websites, have them assess both sites, and then give you advice on what might be the cause and what might be the cure.

What Domain should I use? - Domain authority question
Hi all, I created a website www.bruadair.com approximately 2 months ago, the website is for a luxury villa. Prior to creating this site the villa website was www.bruadair.co.uk , this website had been live for around 4 years. Now after developing the site and creating optimised content etc, I started my link building strategy to try and increase both the page and domain authority of the site. I used MOZ's open site explorer tool to examine my site and compared it with the old domain (www.bruadair.co.uk), this is was where my question arose. The old site has a domain authority of 16/100 and the home page has a page authority of 26/100. The old domain also had 468 inbound links ( the quality of these are most likely questionable, nofollows etc ). The new site in comparison has 1/100 domain authority and 1/100 page authority with no apparent inbound links. Before I noticed this I had generated a few inbound links to the new site, but Moz had not indexed websites since I had done this therefore it probably wouldn't have shown it in the open site explorer. Basically I have cloned the new site to the old web address and am thinking of using the .co.uk version just due to its existing domain and page authority. Would it be beneficial to swap over to the old site to benefit from the domain authority?? Thanks for any help given! 🙂

I'm thinking about buying a competitor and 301 redirecting? How much SEO value?
I'm thinking about buying a competitor and 301 redirecting their site to mine. The high level stats are as follows. My site has a DA of 46 and the homepage has a PA of 55. 375 root domains, 170,000 links. The site sells millions of dollars worth of product each year. The competitor (who I had never heard of) has a DA of 58 and a homepage PA of 64. They have 634 root domains and 260,000 links. They aren't selling much of anything (less than 100,000 per year). We might be able to operate their site but I'm concerned about maintaining 2 platforms. My question is about the value of buying this site and 301 redirecting it to my site. Would this create long term SEO value or not? Any examples that have been documented are greatly appreciated.

Two Links in one Article to One Domain
Will multiple links in a single article to one target domain (but seperate pages) count, or just the first link of that article? Thanks, Chris

'dilution' of link value.
Running ecommerce site selling childrens clothing for norwegian market. Most important keyword childrens clothing (barneklær) isnt too competitive (34 if i remember correct). The 2nd most important has very low competition (5 i think). I am starting a 3 month add with the best blog i found in norway. I am getting a 150x150 ad. In addition she is giving me a presentation in her blog tekst and allows me to arrange giveaway on my terms. She is allowing me to choose anchor text to use in presentation. Her stats to me seem very solid PA 58, DA 50 mozr 5,2 , mozt 4,6. http://www.joridkvam.com/ Should I in the upcoming months try to get in as many anchor texts links from her to different pages on my site. I have main words and producers etc that i am optimizing for on differnt sites. Or will the value of them just get diluted? so basically try to get in 2 links or 10 ? I am also curious as to which extent this one link will affect my ratings. I am ranking 24th for main term atm ( http://www.epleskrinet.no/ ) . Any one have any guesses ? thanks

What's the difference between follow and nofollow links?
I understand this may be a really dumb question and from my understanding there is a piece of code in some url's that tell search engines not to follow that link. I am interested in finding out what the purpose of nofollow links are and how they apply to search rankings. Thanks for the help

Page Autorithy vs. Domaine Autorithy
What is the relationship one vs. the other. What if DA is high and PA very low? I guest the best is to have the highest PA & DA? Will it influence results to have a link from a site with a DA of 80 and a PA of 0 for example? Thank you, Jean

Linking domains on same ip
I don't know if i can post a link in the question so if you google 800 appliance and do a little reaserch on them you will see that it has many links with same content linking to the main domain and to each other. They hosted on the same ip which from what i read doesn't supposed to help in ranking. I saw many nich websites like this with the same idea. What am i missing here...?
