Canonicalisation query
-
Hi,
I'm in a bit of a quandary.
I have this page: https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/
As you can see we have provided filters to only display Fixed rate, Tracker rate, Variable rate, High LTV and HMO products for users.
At the moment our canonical tags all point to the main Comparison page, but in order for the search feature to work dynamic urls are created. So for example on the fixed rate page (https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/fixed-rates/) when a user puts in their search criteria the url ends up looking like this: https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/fixed-rates/?PrevTab=HMO&PVal=250000&Amt=100000&Tme=20&SearchId=5508
Now, my quandary is this - should I make the canonical tag for the filtered products (fixed, tracker etc) like this: https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/fixed-rates/ or should I keep it at https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/ ? The comparison page shows all products, ordered by the lowest rate and with a pre-set search, limited to 20 - so not all products will be displayed on the page - and some products (like the high LTV ones) are not displayed on the main comparison landing page anyway...
Thanks,
Amelia

I have canonicalised the filtered products, and have put a request in to make the H1s editable so will alter those as soon as I can.
Thank you all for taking the time to answer this question, I appreciate it greatly.
Best wishes,
Amelia

Thank you!

IMO, your canonical tag should be for the filtered products (fixed, tracker etc).
individually all pages have different products. It's like a blog. Blogs main page has links all top 10 or 20 or all the blog posts but they have independent pages as well. So you should not be worried about plagiarism issue here.
With this change you'll get a boost in ranking for other two three more products (fixed, tracker etc) as well. as they'll have their own dedicated pages.
canonicalizing all the products to single page is not a good idea

Thank you Patrick. I think I agree with you, but I'll wait for other responses as well! It's been like this for over a month so a few more days won't harm it
Best wishes,
Amelia

Thank you - yes people do use very specific queries to find mortgages. We have landing pages for the higher volume keywords (I won't bore you with the list!!!).
I don't want to rank for 'Mortgage Comparison' as we don't offer residential mortgages - just those for business purposes (such as BTL) so although we'd get a huge amount of traffic our bounce rate would go through the roof - or we'd get enquiries we couldn't deal with which would be a waste of resource...
I appreciate your point about the H1s - and I'll get these updated as soon as I can (I think our devs need to do some stuff to the page to allow me to edit it myself) - Thank you!
Thanks again,
Amelia

Hi Amelia
As all of these pages...
https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/
https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/fixed-rates/
https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/tracker-rates/
https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/variable-rates/
https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/high-ltv/
https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/hmo-rates/...are their own pages. If it were me, I would canonicalize these to themselves, not solely the compare-products page. Reason being, these are different tables, different pieces of data, different purpose pages that probably have equity of their own in search that you could potentially be missing out on.
I'd be interested to hear other opinions on this as well. That's my two cents just quickly looking at this. Hope this helps - let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi Amelia,
Don't know the mortgage business well, but I imagine that people are looking for keywords like "best fixed rate mortgage" or "10 year fixed rate mortgage" etc.
For these queries, the canonical url you use doesn't make much sense. I would try to have url's that correspond to each of these queries - this could be done by rewriting the url's - or by using parameters.
In your case the url
could have this canonical:
https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/tracker-rates/?Tme=5
(in case you decide to keep the parameters - it's probably better to replace 'tme' by 'duration' - see also link below)
or
https://www.commercialtrust.co.uk/compare-products/tracker-rates/5-years
(of course, you must make sure that these canonical pages exist)To be very honest, I think the "/compare-products/" in the url doesn't add much value - I would rather replace it by /mortgage-comparison/ or /buy-to-let-mortgage-comparison/
I would also update the H1 for each of these url's - currently it's a bit generic (Compare buy to let mortgages) - for the example above I would change it to something like : "Mortgage comparison: Best tracker rates - 5 years" (according to Semrush 'mortgage comparison' is more popular as search term than 'compare mortgage'
There is a interesting post of webmastercentral on facetted navigation which would be worth reading: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.be/2014/02/faceted-navigation-best-and-5-of-worst.html
Hope this helps
Dirk

PLEASE HELP - Old query string URL causing problems
For a long time, we were ranking 1st/2nd for the term "Manual handling training". That was until about 5 days ago when I realised that Google had started to index not only a query stringed URL, but also an old version of the URL. What was even weirder was that when you clicked on the result it 301 redirected to the page that it was meant to display... The wrong URL that Google had started to index was: www.ihasco.co.uk/courses/detail/manual-handling?channel=retail The correct URL that it should have been indexing is: https://www.ihasco.co.uk/courses/detail/manual-handling-training I can't get my head around why it has done this as a 301 was in place already and we use rel canonical tags which point to the main parent pages. Anyway, we slapped a noindex tag in our robots.txt file to stop that page from being indexed, which worked but now I can't get the correct page to be indexed, even after a Google fetch. After inspecting the correct URL in the new search console I discovered that Google has ignored the rel canonical on the page (Which points to itself) and has selected the wrong, query stringed URL as the canonical. Why? and how do I rectify this?

Query based site; duplicate content; seo juice flow.
Hi guys, We're planning on starting a Saas based service where we'll be selling different skins. Let's say WordPress themes, though it's not about that. Say we have an url called site.com/ and we would like to direct all seo juice to the mother landing page /best-wp-themes/ but then have that juice flow towards our additional pages: /best-wp-themes/?id=Mozify
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | andy.bigbangthemes
/best-wp-themes/?id=Fiximoz /best-wp-themes/?id=Mozicom Challenges: 1. our content would be formatted like this:
a. Same content - features b. Same content - price c. Different content - each theme will have its own set of features / design specs. d. Same content - testimonials. How would be go about not being penalised by SE's for the duplicate content, but still have the /?id=whatever pages be indexed with proper content? 2. How do we go about making sure SEO juice flows to the /?id pages too?Basically it's the same thing with different skins. Thanks for the help!0 -
Decreased organic traffic but increased Webmaster Tool Queries
We have a client who has had a significant decrease in organic traffic this last month (about 20%) but in Webmaster tools it tells me there was an increase in impressions and clicks. How can these both be accurate?

Should I disallow all URL query strings/parameters in Robots.txt?
Webmaster Tools correctly identifies the query strings/parameters used in my URLs, but still reports duplicate title tags and meta descriptions for the original URL and the versions with parameters. For example, Webmaster Tools would report duplicates for the following URLs, despite it correctly identifying the "cat_id" and "kw" parameters: /Mulligan-Practitioner-CD-ROM
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | jmorehouse
/Mulligan-Practitioner-CD-ROM?cat_id=87
/Mulligan-Practitioner-CD-ROM?kw=CROM Additionally, theses pages have self-referential canonical tags, so I would think I'd be covered, but I recently read that another Mozzer saw a great improvement after disallowing all query/parameter URLs, despite Webmaster Tools not reporting any errors. As I see it, I have two options: Manually tell Google that these parameters have no effect on page content via the URL Parameters section in Webmaster Tools (in case Google is unable to automatically detect this, and I am being penalized as a result). Add "Disallow: *?" to hide all query/parameter URLs from Google. My concern here is that most backlinks include the parameters, and in some cases these parameter URLs outrank the original. Any thoughts?0 -
Possible problem with new site (GWT no queries/very low index vs. submitted)
Hi everyone, I recently launched a new website for a small business loan company in the Dallas area. The site has been live for roughly a month and a half. I submitted everything to GWT as usual, including my sitemap. I am not sure what's going on with the site, as there is no activity from GWT in the impressions or queries. The submit vs. index is 24/3 (and hasn't moved). Also the queries graph on the overview stops at 3/18/2015... On another note, when I go to Crawl > Sitemaps, it shows that there were pages indexed during the month of march and then on April 3 it drops from 17 to 2 and never increases. Google says there are no errors or issues found, but I feel like there's something wrong. When I do site:, my URLs do pop up which makes me believe there's just a problem with my GWT. With that being said, I'm not happy THINKING there's something wrong. I need to actually know what the problem is. The only thing I can think of that I have done is purchase SSL for the site, but when I search what pages are indexed using www. it shows all the HTTPS URLS, so that would tell me that the site is getting indexed without a problem? Does anyone have a clue as to what might be happening? I will attach some screen shots so that you can get a better idea... KQ2366i D5xBNZf mF7kkgW

Going after GWMT queries - Smart or Risky???
Hi, I wanted to know if finding queries (using the GWMT) that are under-performing (not maximizing their potential) either due to A. good position but low CTR
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | BeytzNet
B. low to medium position and change on-page items (titles and meta description for low CTR, add content to low position) is a good strategy or risky and may harm me further (but what do I have to lose...)?0 -
Using Reg Ex to 301 old categories and query strings in Magento
Hi SEOmoz community! I'm hoping somebody with a little Magento and Reg Ex knowledge will be able to help me out here. I need to 301 some old categories along with their old query strings. Below is an example. Old URL /bed-linen/pillowcases-html.html Users can then filter by price or range which then creates a query string such as... /bed-linen/pillowcases-html.html?price=1%2C10 New URL: /bed-linen/pillowcases.html So the new query string will be /bed-linen/pillowcases.html?price=1%2C10 Does anybody know the Reg Ex to 301 this? Can this be done in Magento re-write module or by htaccess only? Thanks in advance 🙂 Anthony @Anthony_Mac85

How to Improve or Recover Google Image Search Performance (Queries, Impressions, Clicks)?
I want to improve or recover Google image search performance for my eCommerce website. My website was working well in Google image search but, I found negative performance since implementation of CDN for all images. Before CDN my image path was as follow. http://www.vistastores.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/265x/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/1/0/10133_1.jpg After CDN my image path is as follow. http://lghttp.11720.nexcesscdn.net/805298/images/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/900x800/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/1/0/10133_1.jpg I can see that, Google image search performance is going down after set up CDN on my website. Because, all images are available on external server. So, How to recover Google image search performance after CDN or any idea to improve performance? 6871173584_a85e22ce1c_b.jpg
