Duplicate Content Mystery
-
Hi Moz community!
I have an ongoing duplicate mystery going on here and I'm hoping someone here can answer my question.
We have an Ecommerce site that has a variety of product pages and category pages. There are Rel canonicals in place, along with parameters in GWT, and there are also URL rewrites.
Here are some scenarios, maybe you can give insight as to what’s exactly going on and how to fix it.
All the duplicates look to be coming from category pages specifically.
For example:
This link re-writes:To:
http://www.incipio.com/cases/tablet-cases/amazon-kindle-cases-sleeves.html
The rel canonical tag looks like this:
http://www.incipio.com/cases/tablet-cases/amazon-kindle-cases-sleeves.html" />
The CONTENT is different, but the URLs are the same. It thinks that the product category view is the same as the all products view, even though there is a canonical in there telling it which one is the original. Some of them don’t have anything to do with each other.
Take a look:
Link identified as duplicate:
Link this is a duplicate of:
http://www.incipio.com/cases/macbook-cases/macbook-pro-13in-cases.html
Any idea as to what could be happening here?

Hi Ishwar,
If you have done so yet it would be best to create your own post. Many people pop in here to help others and when they see this topic as answered they may not look at it. Creating your own post will get the most attention.

Hi Nicole,
Okay so the reason I stated that it appears something is improperly installed is due to the fact a page should in general have 1 head tag, 1 title tag, 1 body tag and 1 document type declaration. Your page has the normal ones you'd expect to see plus another set.
In the code I posted above you have an Iframe, which is basically a tag that says display information from a different source. In this case it is Google, which is fine but it should not contain another set of head, title, and body tags along with a document declaration. Google would never do that. This along with my years of experience looking at and installing ad-ons leads me to believe that something was installed incorrectly or at the very least not coded correctly.
As to the misconfiguration issue, I would look first at how my url rewrites are being done as there is no viable reason the first link you posted should rewrite to a url and serve different content than what is suppose to be there. That tells me that the re-writes are being incorrectly handled.
I hope that helps a little,
Don

Pages are same. I have 100+ Error on website so how can i remove this error? DO you have any tutorial based on this?
Can i change canonical url at once or i need to set it one by one

Hi Donford,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. Great answer! I'd like some clarification here. I did not configure this and if I'm going to talk to the developer, I'd like to have more knowledge to speak to it.
Could you please clarify what you mean when you say:
- It looks like something is installed and configured improperly.
- You have 2 head tags on the page that shows up from the redirect.
- This is actually inside the first head tag complete with a body tag and another doc declaration.
I looked at the example you sent, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at. If you could explain those bullet points in more detail, it would greatly help.
You're the best!
Thanks,
Nicole

It looks like something is installed and configured improperly.
You have 2 head tags on the page that shows up from the redirect.
This is actually inside the first head tag complete with a body tag and another doc declaration.
<iframe id="oauth2relay579972146" name="oauth2relay579972146" src="https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/postmessageRelay?parent=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.incipio.com#rpctoken=728288212&forcesecure=1" style="width: 1px; height: 1px; position: absolute; top: -100px;" tabindex="-1">
<html><head><title>title><meta content="text/html; charset=utf-8" http-equiv="content-type"><meta content="IE=edge" http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible"><meta content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1, minimum-scale=1, maximum-scale=1, user-scalable=0" name="viewport"><script src="https://apis.google.com/js/api.js" type="text/javascript" gapi_processed="true"><script src="https://oauth.googleusercontent.com/gadgets/js/core:rpc:shindig.random:shindig.sha1.js?c=2" type="text/javascript"><script src="https://ssl.gstatic.com/accounts/o/3417060037-postmessagerelay.js">head><body>html>iframe>
That looks like an installation issue.
-
Now the misconfiguration issue would have to be why the URL re-writes to page but serves up different content.
-
And lastly I think even if you fix those issues you're still going to get duplicate content warnings because you have very thin content on pages.
-
Example: Page 1 http://www.incipio.com/cases/tablet-cases/amazon-kindle-cases-sleeves/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-6-cases.html
-
Example: Page 2 http://www.incipio.com/cases/tablet-cases/amazon-kindle-cases-sleeves/amazon-kindle-fire-hd-7-cases.html
-
On those 2 pages there is a 1 character difference 6 instead of 7. All the other content (header & footer) and 1 letter difference. Than if you go to the actual product page you have the exact same issue same description to the letter except the one number. Yep, you're going to have a duplicate content problem.
-
This is something that all e-commerce stores face. You honestly need to write unique content for each and every product you sell. Don't copy & paste stuff from another site like Amazon or the manufacturers site, write your own content.
-
In summation, I would recheck any modules/ad-ons/plug-ins you installed as one appears to be incorrect. if that doesn't' fix the re-write issue have a developer that is familiar with your ecommerce platform look at this issue. Lastly, you got to have unique content.
-
Maybe not the best news but I hope it helps

Don
Edit in bullet points to try and make the post a look a little better. These forums don't take kindly to adding code blocks

Content relaunch without content duplication
We write great Content for blog and websites (or at least we try), especially blogs. Sometimes few of them may NOT get good responses/reach. It could be the content which is not interesting, or the title, or bad timing or even the language used. My question for the discussion is, what will you do if you find the content worth audience's attention missed it during its original launch. Is that fine to make the text and context better and relaunch it ? For example: 1. Rechristening the blog - Change Title to make it attractive
Technical SEO | | macronimous
2. Add images
3. Check spelling
4. Do necessary rewrite, spell check
5. Change the timeline by adding more recent statistics, references to recent writeups (external and internal blogs for example), change anything that seems outdated Also, change title and set rel=cannoical / 301 permanent URLs. Will the above make the blog new? Any ideas and tips to do? Basically we like to refurbish (:-)) content that didn't succeed in the past and relaunch it to try again. If we do so will there be any issues with Google bots? (I hope redirection would solve this, But still I want to make sure) Thanks,0 -
Duplicate Content of Reseller Product?
There is a particular product/service that I resell through an API. There are quite a few of them and each one requires a lot of content. The company provides web content for each product but I'm wondering about the SEO implications of using it? Obviously using the content, it will not be unique so I won't be able to rank (easily at least) for these products. Are there any _negative_results that I can get from using this content though? If I simply won't rank for those products it's not an issue since I get traffic elsewhere. Thanks!

Our client wants both domain name to go to the same magento store. What is the safe way of letting Google know these are same company? Or this is not ideal to do this? thanks

Duplicate content
I have just ran a report in seomoz on my domain and has noticed that there are duplicate content issues, the issues are: www.domainname/directory-name/ www.domainname/directory-name/index.php All my internal links and external links point to the first domain, as i prefer this style as it looks clear & concise, however doing this has created duplicate content as within the site itself i have an index.php page inside this /directory-name/ to show the page. Could anyone give me some advice on what i should do please? Kind Regards

301ed Pages Still Showing as Duplicate Content in GWMT
I thank anyone reading this for their consideration and time. We are a large site with millions of URLs for our product pages. We are also a textbook company, so by nature, our products have two separate ISBNs: a 10 digit and a 13 digit form. Thus, every one of our books has at least two pages (10 digit and 13 digit ISBN page). My issue is that we have established a 301 for all the 10 digit URLs so they automatically redirect to the 13 digit page. This fix has been in place for months. However, Google still reports that they are detecting thousands of pages with duplicate title and meta tags. Google is referring to these page URLs that I already have 301ed to the canonical version many months ago! Is there anything that I can do to fix this issue? I don't understand what I am doing wrong. Example:
Technical SEO | | dfinn
http://www.bookbyte.com/product.aspx?isbn=9780321676672
http://www.bookbyte.com/product.aspx?isbn=032167667X As you can see the 10 digit ISBN page 301s to 13 digit canonical version. Google reports that they have detected duplicate title and meta tags between the two pages and there are thousands of these duplicate pages listed. To add some further context: The ISBN is just a parameter that allows us to provide content when someone searches for a product with the 10 or 13 digit ISBN. The 13 digit version of the page is the only physical page that exists, the 10 digit is only a part of the virtual URL structure of the website. This is why I cannot simply change the title and meta tags of the 10 digit pages because they only exist in the sense that the URL redirects to the 13 digit version. Also, we submit a sitemap every day of all the 13 digit pages so Google knows exactly what our physical URL structure is. I have submitted this question to GWMT forums and received no replies.0 -
Are RSS Feeds deemed duplicate content?
If a website content management system includes built-in feeds of different categories that the client can choose from, does that endanger them of having duplicate content if their categories are the same as another client's feed? These feeds appear on templated home page designs by default. Just trying to figure out how big of an issue these feeds are in terms of duplicate content across clients' sites. Should I be concerned? Obviously, there's other content on the home page besides the feed and have not really seen negative effects, but could it be impacting results?
