How do you check mobile-friendliness when you have a separate mobile site?

One of our clients has a separate mobile site, and we've setup the rel="alternate" on the main site homepage, but https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ still fails the site (it checks the main site, instead of the mobile site) when we put in the main site URL. Is there any way to check that we've got everything setup correctly? (We have a lot of experience with mobile responsive sites, but not so much with separate URLs.)

Got this issue fixed. The issue was that robots.txt was blocking the Javascript file that does the redirect, so Google couldn't see the redirect.

I have not personally used one, but this particular search looks like it uncovers some that are available. "Simple Mobile Redirect" has the best reviews. Also, this is a good general guide from Google on user agent detection / HTTP redirects.

To handle the redirect to the mobile site. Sounds like the JavaScript this client had in place isn't working correctly.

Did the same check with Firefox (with a Mobile user agent) & still get the desktop version. Don't think the problem is with the redirect but with the detection.
I guess if you search for User Agent sniffer Wordpress you should be able to find some tools. Afraid I can't help you with that (this is the point where I handle it over to the technical department myself...)

You would get a 200 response...the redirect is JavaScript, not server side. Maybe we should change that? Do you have a WP plugin you recommend?

The redirect was setup by a previous vendor, but I've not noticed any issues with them.

I just tested the url on web-sniffer.net with mobile user agent - it seems that the tool you use to detect if the user agent is a mobile one doesn't work. I get a normal 200 status (from the desktop site) - idem like Patrick

Are you sure your redirects are set up properly? I tested this on my phone and it seemed a little wonky. Are those put in place correctly?

The normal way to check is like you did - if it fails it implies something is wrong with the way you set it up. Check the link in Patrick's answer - the doc of Google is quite detailed how to set it up properly.

Do you have an example URL we can check? Did you only do this on the homepage and no other internal pages?
Also, did you set up your redirects properly? Check out this resource from Google.

Why is Google not indexing my site?
I'm a bit confused as to why my site just isn't indexing on Google. Even if I type in my brand name, my social channels rank and there's no evidence of my website. I've followed all of the advice I've read and gone into webmaster tools and got the Wordpress yoast plug-in but nothing seems to be making a difference!One thing I've noticed, in Google Webmaster Tools it says "Couldn’t communicate with the DNS server." in site errors. I've called GoDaddy and they said that everything is fine. A bit frustrating. Trying to work out what my next steps should be but feeling a bit lost to be honest! Any help GREATLY appreciated!

Https Cached Site
Hi there, I recently switch my site to a new ecommerce platform which hosts the SSL certificate on their end so my site no longer has the HTTPS status unless a user is going through the checkout. Google has cached the HTTPS version of the site so in search it comes up sometimes which leads to a nasty warning that the site may not be what they are looking for. Is there a way to tell google NOT to look at the https version of the site anymore? Thanks! Bianca

Why does my mobile site have a "?mobiRedirect=1" string at the end of the URL?
Hello, When trying to access my site from a smart-phone, I'm getting a redirected to the mobile version (which is correct), however at the end of the URL there is a redirect string that shows every time. I'm not sure why its its showing or how it automatically gets appended to the end of the URL each time. How can I configure my mobile site to prevent the ?mobiRedirect=1" from showing? For example, if you search for "Columbus Regional Health" on Google with a smart-phone, the first result should be for www.crh.org. If you click that, you should get redirected to www.crh.org/mobile , however its displaying the URL as http://www.crh.org/mobile/default.aspx?mobiRedirect=1 Does anyone know how to fix this? Exclude mobile pages from non mobile Google serps
Hi Everybody I see that a lot of our pages on our mobile shop has started to turn up when i do site:domainname.com on google. As they could potentially compete with the similar non mobile version of the same page, is there some way to exlude the mobile domain in non mobile google result without blocking the mobile version altogether. .CA site same as .com site - are both necessary?
Dear Friend, We representa a major national brand in the auto care industry, and they have locations in both US and Canada. There is a primary content site at .com that we have duplicated at .ca. We are hosting the .ca site on a separate IP on a server in Canada - but by in large it is the same site. (there are some minor changes we made to change US English to Canadian English - though minor. When we search Google.ca we generally see strong search results for the .com site, but rarely, if ever any evidence of rankings for the .ca site. The .com site was launched several years ago about 18 months before the .ca site. Why doesn't Google.ca show the .ca site? Is this an issue of duplicate content, and Google.ca simply shows the .com version which it knew about first? Are we wasting our time, money and efforts having both? We use a separate site to locate local shops, and have coordinated that well with Google Places, and when looking for local auto care - we do well in both US and Canada.
