Drastic Drop in Link Juice
-
Hi Back in December we shifted my web domain from a gourmetdirect.com to gourmetdirect.co.nz as part of a site-wide revamp. Everything was going along fine until recently when my Linking domains plummeted and external links fell from 6000 approx to 600. We still have the .com live for loads of disfunctional reasons. Can anyone help? I have gone from a top ranker to a no show and my contractors are all shaking their heads.

Thanks so much Ryan and Tim - Job sorted! You rock!!!
-
Thanks once again Ryan. I will do as you suggest and fingers crossed Google will respond kindly.

It looks like duplicate content could definitely be the issue and is often not a warning inducing item in WMT. I'd recommend getting the .com site fully redirected and charting out PR around the move along with a healthy content schedule leading into the high season. Glad to hear the affects haven't hit you hard in Analytics yet and that your season will allow for the changes to go smoothly. Cheers!

Thanks Ryan. I will run some more Tools as you suggest and I agree, the ranking drop is what concerns me most. So grateful for your help and thank goodness this is happening now and not in November!

Hi Tim
Thanks so much for your help. We put 301s in place for our top 50 .com links when we went live. The assumption was that google would discover the others but Google hasn't so we are lodging the remaining 700 asap. Both sites run the same content for identical products and info pages etc so yes my instinct tells me that could be the basis of our ranking drop. There are no warnings in WMT and Analytics so far shows no drastic traffic decrease. Fortunately its the depths of our low season here.

You might consider adding to your total link count with some other sources: Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Majestic, Ahrefs, etc. to get a larger look into what's going on around links. Moz's link data has gone through several changes in the past couple of months. See: http://moz.com/community/q/what-s-the-story-on-mozscape-updates and: https://mza.bundledseo.com/products/api/updates
The ranking drop is more concerning and, as Tim suggests below, could be due to duplicate content issues if you're still running both domains in a similar fashion. Are there any warnings within your GSC? What has analytics been showing you? Best of luck!

If the .com domain is to be retired in the near future have you considered redirecting your existing .com links to your .co.nz domain via 301 redirects. This will hopefully give your .co.nz domain a boost. also have you put in a domain change with Google.
As both sites are running do you have potential duplicate content issues hindering efforts? Just trying to get a feeling for what you did when you instigated your domain move/transfer etc.

Hi Ryan
Thank you for this. We use Moz to track link counts and we have been in decline on links since Mid to late March this year. Both domains seem to be behaving similarly. Our links are all from legit supplier partners and 23 years of web presence and 90% would be NZ based. Is it possible that we are in free fall because we have both sites still running having not yet retired the .com?
-
Hello. Which services have you been using to keep track of link counts? Have you been keeping archived records to help pinpoint where the links went missing? Are the numbers you're reporting aggregate for both domains? Have you lost certain listings based on regions? (EU, US, South America, etc.)
Getting insight into some of those questions will begin to point you in the right direction. Cheers!

Drop in featured snippets and sessions following algorithm update
Seemingly following the Feb 2021 algorithm update (passage indexing) our site has seen a massive drop in featured snippets (from 39 on 8th Feb to 27 on 15th Feb) and hasn't recovered (still 27 on 18th March). Our site has also seen a steady drop off in sessions in the UK over the past couple of weeks, despite continued increases in the US. This could potentially be due to the loss of featured snippets meaning less traffic to our top pages, but we're wondering if this could also be another change, separate to featured snippets? Does anyone know if these changes are likely to be linked to the passage indexing algorithm update (or another unconfirmed update) or simply a coincidence and either way, what we can start doing to see our number of featured snippets (and then hopefully sessions) start to increase again? EDIT: As of 22th March, these have dropped again to just 10 featured snippets - a total of 290% decrease - any help would we appreciated! TIA 🙂

Our site dropped by April 2018 Google update about content relevance: How to recover?
Hi all, After Google's confirmed core update in April 2018, we dropped globally and couldn't able to recover later. We found the update is about the content relevance as officially stated by Google later. We wonder how we are not related in-terms of content being ranking for same keywords over years. And we are expecting to find a solution to this. Are there any standard ways to measure the content relevancy? Please suggest! Thank you

Anyone else notice a traffic drop around June 28th 2016?
Hey guys, i know there is a lot of chatter about a potential google update on / around June 28th... well, one of the sites I manage was hit pretty bad. I have attached an image showing what our ranking looked like before and after the unconfirmed update. As you will see, we plummeted that day and have not yet recovered. Has anyone else experienced drops? I'm trying to identify potential causes. I've started an SEO audit and so far I have identified 1 big fish and a few niggly bits. Big Fish: non-www version of site had redirect rule overwritten by CloudFlare page rules and is using a 302 redirect instead of a 301. Now could this be the cause? Niggly bits: technical SEO issues and optimisations like having unique meta titles etc. If you have noticed drops or think you can shed some light on my situation that will help me then I would love to hear from you 🙂 Thanks upload.png upload.png

Giving Follow Links is good for SEO ?
Hi Friends, In my website I am having PR 5 for my home page and I am giving 25 external links as follow link. Reason is all links are natural links so I gave as follow links. Will my website will be decrease PR in future. 1) Should I need to give as nofollow links? 2) Can I update only for reciprocal links as nofollow? In total 25 links I have 3 reciprocal links only. Your suggestions on this are important for me. I had watched couple of videos from Matt Cutts on this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x4UJS-LFRTU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g37bwBlifnk http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mg1A5wF3Ac4 Thanks for your valuable time.

Ranking drop Feb 2013?
I'm trying to get to the bottom of why Directholidays.co.uk suffered a drop in rankings for the term "cheap holidays" in February 2013. Im looking at this recently and as an outsider so I haven't got access to Webmaster tools and I haven't been tracking rankings/link profiling. They moved from 2nd to 10th temporarily and then recovered at 7th the new 10th! I've looked at keywords improved/declined on, keywords lost/gained, traffic, traffic price but im failing to see exactly what I can use to show whether Panda #24 (officially 22nd of January) had a significant effect. Can anyone shed any light on this? It would be massively appreciated!

Rank dropped for website
We have seen rankings drop considerably for www.think-ins.co.uk in the last 48 hours, I know Penguin 2.0 has been released but anyone got any ideas on what specifically we might have been penalised for? Thanks

Did anyone else get a massive drop off in Bing recently?
Only for one set of my keywords. But I fell from first page to off the map in one fell swoop. Did this happen to anyone else? Should I be worried?

Will too many [img no alt-text] links harm a link profile?
Hi everyone. I have a client who has a lot of sponsorships etc and therefore a lot of inbound image links (many of them sitewide). Unfortunately most of these don't have alt text, and [img no alt-text] links now make up over 50% of their link profile. Should I be trying to correct this and requesting updates from the people who are linking? Obviously I wouldn't want loads of keyword stuffed alt texts, but maybe I should request alt texts on the brand name or URL instead. Do you think this would make a significant difference and be worth the time it will take to contact all these webmasters? Thanks in advance.
