Why competitors rank with no content & filters

We're investing a lot in on-page content and creating categories/sub categories to target relevant keywords. Although it seems competitors with high domain authorities are clearly dominating in the SERPs and the pages have NO content. They are literally filters that create landing pages.
For example when you search "Kaydian Beds", Debenhams rank below the manufacturer with just a filtered page, this page has not been optimised with content to target the keywords, only the META title changes depending on the chosen filter.

This is very frustrating as quality content should beat pages with little or no content, we will spend some time and get some inbound links to the page to try boost the rankings but does anyone have any similar experiences with anything like this?

Thanks for the great question! A lot of webmasters see the exact same problem, but I think there are some fairly clear answers.
**What is "Good Content"? **
Good content is what the user wants, but it can take many forms. Good content could just be a video, or an image, or in this case, a list of products. Most e-commerce users are not interested in all in learning about the year that a particular brand was established. They want to look at pictures of the product and purchase them. Now, this is not to say that good textual content won't be useful to the search engines to understand the page, but it isn't going to be a silver bullet. 140 words shoved in a box at the bottom of the page just isn't going to really improve the user experience.What to do?
You generally have two options - either increase your authority overall, or really blow the competition out of the water in terms of quality textual content. I don't want to see 140 words of text, I want to see a wall of really great textual information about the product and manufacturer. You could start by listing off their accreditations, which are available on the brand site, explaining why those make the beds a superior product. You could have images which show off some of the design and manufacturing processes that make the beds durable or design features that make them desirable. There really isn't a fixed word limit here, it should be about providing exhaustive research on the product line.Unfortunately, you have an uphill battle. Succeeding in the ecom space is very hard when you don't have exclusive products and/or a great deal of pre-existing authority. You have to go above-and-beyond to prove yourself and your site. I see that you're a Moz Pro subscriber, so something you might try is running those search terms through the Keyword Difficulty Tool's Full SERP Report. You might be able to get a sense of what's bumping up those competitors.

I believe that most people see similar cases. I see "stub" pages on wikipedia beating me and skinny content on other domains above me.
I do not believe that there is anything that I can do about it directly. Google isn't going to change their algo if I complain. So my best weapon against it is working on my own site.

What to do about one site dominating search results? (multiple pages ranking)?
Anybody have thoughts on dealing with search results where the same site gets listed multiple times? "weebly vs wix" is one example (same site #1-3, repetitive articles, not crazy high authority), but I see this now and then. How is it possible to rank on Google Norway for spot nr.1 (page in English language) and spot nr.2 (page in Norwegian language) , when all you competitors have higher PA, DA and a lot more backlinks and better on-page optimization according to MOZ? How much should I analyze my competitors?
Hi, Recently I've started a competitor research (aka competitive analysis). A few hours after I began, I've started to feel that maybe I'm doing too much unnecessary work. What I've been doing so far is analyzing the competitor's links (using the Dr Pete's Link Profiling excel and some other things), and their site optimization. The on-site optimization analysis has been very light, just to see if the competitors are doing something really well, or not. But still, I think that maybe I'm doing too much work. So, I'd like to see your thoughs: How much work is necessary when doing competitor analysis? What things do you analyse? And how much do you report to the clients? Thank you all in advance! Ivan

How does my competitor website jump from a natural ranking of 10 to 1 in a matter of days?
OK this has really got me baffled, and I really hope the MOZ community can give me the answers I am seeking.... My statements and queries below are my own opinions and thoughts. I am not an experienced SEOer and I am learning all the time, so if I have written something incorrectly, please feel free to correct me 🙂 I have been told that natural rankings take time, and I have read with the recent algorithm changes from Google, that purchased links do not have an effect like they used to. I have also read somewhere that google has clamped down on bogus article writing (MOZ please clarify) But what I am seeking some clarification on is, how does my competitors website, that has had a natural rank of #1 in the past, suddenly drop off; for a lengthy period of time, then suddenly re-appear at #10 on page #1, then some three/four days later, hit #1? I have read that natural rankings are purely natural. I.e. a domain owner cannot pay google to boost their natural ranking. But is this really true? Why is it when I speak to a close colleague of mine in the same industry, he mentions that his maps listing has dropped off, and after making a couple of phone calls to his SEO guys in India, maybe a day or two later, magically his maps re-appear? I really am starting to question is a "natural ranking" really "natural?" I have heard that some of these SEO agencies do have some tools that dramatically effect the natural ranking of a domain. What are these tools?

Why would a site with virtually no external links and low authority rank very high?
Hey there: I'm not sure anyone's going to be game to answer this but... I have designed, done on-page optimization for and done ongoing content marketing and linkbuilding for a local fitness site. The site is about nine months old and I am attempting to achieve rank for the keyword "personal trainers in philadelphia." We've made progress; having taken a new site from +100 to 19 in about four or five months worth of content creation and linkbuilding on a very modest budget. I'm not complaining. What has me confused though is that there are one or two sites that are ranking very high for this keyword string with considerably shoddier metrics than our site and I'm wondering how a stock WP theme site with very few inbound links can rank top five for a reasonably competitive keyword? Our site is http://vtrainersinc.com. The site I've noticed that ranks top five and seems to have an inferior SEOMoz profile is bodycrafters.net. Anybody got any ideas as to why these things seem to occur? I have this feeling this site has stumbled upon a magic SEO elixir which I'd like to get my hands on!

Comparing competitor folder path
Hi All I've just take on a new client and need to be able to compare their performance with a competitor's sub-folder site. The competitor is http://thebestof.co.uk/local/brightonandhove/ I've tried to add that to the competition structure in my campaign but can't use "Path" info. What do you guys do in these types of cases. BTW - TheBestOf.co.uk is a franchise with a /local/CityNames across the UK

Link analysis competitors
Am I missing something here or does SEO Moz only support three competitor sites to do comparisons against in each campaign? If not where do I add another website to the list to compare against? Thanks in advance!
