Curious what risk we are for Panda 4.2 update
-
We are curious to know what the MOZ community thinks about our level of unique content on the following profile and if the community thinks we are currently at risk / susceptible for a Panda 4.2 Penalty. We have profiles on over 4,000 colleges (https://www.noodle.com/colleges/coUD/williams-college) some are more populated with content than others. We've already taken action to noindex several hundred thousand profile URLs (https://www.noodle.com/tutoring/tc2d9be/eye-level-center-of-tribeca) which currently publish less original content.
Curious how other major vertical search websites approach this problem (a la Glassdoor, Yelp, TripAdvisor, etc)
As always - the feedback from this community is priceless!!

From my experience I could see this being a risk, but, it sounds like you are aware of the important factors to consider.
I'd want a good portion of unique content on any of those types of pages that is:
- Different from other places on the web
- Different form other pages on the site
I'd also focus on making sure the content is utilizing correct grammar, punctuation and reads well.
I'd think carefully about your plan for indexation and crawling based on how users actually search as well. URLs like this:
Don't seem like they'd be likely targets for searchers (I didn't check volume..just a guess that there isn't much volume there). Meaning, while this page is likely useful for someone once they hit the site, it seems like it's fairly long-tail and might pick up few searches. While that's not necessarily bad, it's easy to get a large chunk of dynamically generated pages out there that:
- Attract few (if any) organic searches
- Waste crawl budget
- Put you at risk for algo adjustments because they can start to have very similar content, show little user activity, etc.
While I haven't looked to see how some of the other big players in vertical search that you mentioned are handling this stuff, I do know that clients we've worked with in the past playing in these spaces have found benefit from carefully crafting architecture for users and bots to make sure the site aligns well with how people are actually searching and that that is the content available.
I would also wager a guess that Glassdoor and other big players are getting a lot of benefit because of their off-site signals (large link profiles, brand mentions, branded searches, good user signals, etc.). That would help them be seen as legitimate if there was question about their content.
Make sure you're providing good value for users that makes you the place to go, make sure you are building your brand signals, and make sure you have a strong plan that aligns your site with how users are actually searching.
Hope that helps!

During major update rankings update seem to be on pause ?
Hello, I have read in the past that during a major update google puts all his ressources in the update and it seems that they don't update search results anymore. Has someone noticed that too ? How long does it take for an update to be rolled out fully and have everything get back to normal ? Thank you,

URL change - Sitemap update / redirect
Hi everyone Recently we performed a massive, hybrid site migration (CMS, URL, site structure change) without losing any traffic (yay!). Today I am finding out that our developers+copy writers decided to change Some URLs (pages are the same) without notifying anyone (I'm not going into details why). Anyhow, some URLs in site map changed, so old URLs don't exist anymore. Here is the example: OLD (in sitemap, indexed): https://www.domain.com/destinations/massachusetts/dennis-port NEW: https://www.domain.com/destinations/massachusetts/cape-cod Also, you should know that there is a number of redirects that happened in the past (whole site) Example : Last couple years redirections: HTTP to HTTPS non-www to www trailing slash to no trailing slash Most recent (a month ago ) Site Migration Redirects (URLs / site structure change) So I could add new URLs to the sitemap and resubmit in GSC. My dilemma is what to do with old URL? So we already have a ton of redirects and adding another one is not something I'm in favor of because of redirect loops and issues that can affect our SEO efforts. I would suggest to change the original, most recent 301 redirects and point to the new URL ( pre-migration 301 redirect to newly created URL). The goal is not to send mixed signals to SEs and not to lose visibility. Any advice? Please let me know if you need more clarification. Thank you

Panda/Penguin & more than one services site in niche
Hello, My friend has a personal development training site. I have been advised not to make separate personal coaching sites for the owners of the training sites. Do you have experience that Panda/Penguin could penalize for separate sites in a similar niche? Do you need any more info to give a good response? Thank you.

2 Year Old Keyword Focused Site Will Not Rank for Keyword
Hi All, I need your help. This site is confounding me. The site is turnstilefactory.com It's a few years old. Strong domain name and seo focused on the term 'turnstile'. In bound links are not abundant, but certainly not absent either. Considering the subject matter, content and competition in the space, I would expect this site by now to at least be in the top 10 pages for the search 'turnstile', but it's not. I've tried everything I can think of with this, but it just won't rank for anything other than it's domain name. Can anyone please take a look and let me know if they see something I'm missing? It would be appreciated. Thanks.

Need help identifying why my content rich site was hurt by the Panda Update.
Hi - I run a hobby related niche new / article / resource site (http://tinyurl.com/4eavaj4) which has been heavily impacted by the Panda update. Honestly I have no idea why my Google rankings dropped off. I've hired 2 different SEO experts to look into it and no one has been able to figure it out. My link profile is totally white hat and stronger then the majority of my competitors, I have 4000+ or so pages of unique, high quality content, am a Google News source, and publish about 5 new unique articles every day. I ended up deleting a 100 or so thin video pages on my site, did some url reorganization (using 301s), and fixed all the broken links. That appeared to be helping as my traffic was returning to normal. Then the bottom dropped out again. Since Saturday my daily traffic has dropped by 50%. I am really baffled at this point as to what to do so any help would be sincerely appreciated. Thanks, Mike [email protected]
