How do you perform competitive research for SEO?

What metrics tell you the most when you're looking at your competitors across the search landscape?
- PageRank/MozRank
- Inbound links
- Keyword rankings
- Alexa/QuantCast/etc.
- Pages indexed
- Something else entirely?
What numbers speak volumes to you when you want to get an idea of how you benchmark against your competitors? And how do you communicate these results?

Thanks Pashmina - I think you really hit the nail on the head when it comes to traffic share.
I believe that tools like Hitwise and comScore can present some pretty compelling data around traffic share - have you used them, are they worth the cost, and do they work any better than the tools you list above?

Jonathon, this is a good idea for a post. Let's cover the metrics you've listed here quickly first, then other things not mentioned.
- Page Rank - ignore and don't present. It's not exactly easy to move the needle on this month to month.
- Moz Rank - better than page rank, and present as a baseline and compare to competitors.
- Inbound Links, not just number, but number of unique domains.
- Keyword Ranks, aggregate by #1, top 5, top 10, top 20.
- Alexa, in the same chart/area as Moz Rank.
- Pages indexed, yes, only if they're running flash, or have no content to speak of. And educate why redoing website or serious content dev is priority numero Uno for their SEO.
I also think it's important to present them with data that acts as a "carrot" The above stats can show them how they rank against their competitors, but the connection in terms of what they'll gain by out ranking them on those stats isn't clear. I also like to collect data from Spyfu, Keyword Spy or Compete on their comeptitors traffic. If the data is there, you can chart their **traffic share. **This shows them how much traffic & clicks they're missing out on by not ranking high enough.I think this number speaks volumes.

Although I am still learning a lot from everyone here I usually start off on competitor research by asking my client who they think their competitors are. Then I perform searches for a range of their keywords and identify online competitors (who are often a different bunch to the clients).
Things that I look at include:
- Search Trends (Use Google Insights for keywords)
- Likihood Client + Competitors sites are to convert from users perspective
- Competitors Ranking URLs Page Authority (and Page Rank)
- Competitors Domain Authority
- What elements of onsite they are optimising
- The range of other keywords they are targeting
- Inbound Links (to domain and ranking URLs)
- Link Velocity (Majestic SEO is pretty damn good for this)
- Whether they have keywords in their URLs
- Anchor Text of inbound and internal links
- Internal Linking of sites
- Their Use of social media
This isnt an exhaustive list by any means and each time I run audits and competitive research I find new things that are (probably) affecting rankings.
The thing is, there is no way to cookie cut research as search engines themselves are evolving.

Type in your keyword and the SEOmoz tool will determine the difficulty for you. It analyzes all sorts of metrics for you so you don't have to. However, if you were to do it manually, here's what I would look at:
1. How many root domains link to you vs. your competitors?
2. What is the Page Authority/Domain Authority of you vs. your competitors?

4. Using Majestic SEO, how fast are you acquiring new links compared to the rate of your competitors?
That's the biggies I would look at.

Looking for Competitive Research Tool Recommendations
Hi Moz Community! I'm doing research for a client and trying to gain insights around their competitors website data. Specifically trying to see what landing pages on the competitors site receive the most traffic. Does anyone currently use a tool that shows estimated traffic here? As an FYI, outside of MOZ Pro (which I love), I use SpyFu and SimilarWeb. Right now my client's landing page traffic is mainly homepage traffic and we want to make reccos on where to grow outside the homepage to increase visibility in other specific areas where there is search demand. We have a good idea but I'm hoping the competitor web data will back up those recommendations. Any recommendations here would be super valuable! Thank you in advance for your time. Abbi

Beating the Big Boys: help analyzing keywords in a very competitive space
Hi all! Long time Pro member first time question asker! We are in real estate in Barcleona and, although we create tons of content (daily blogs, free ebooks, videos) we have never properly optimized our root domain page for any keywords that might bring us specifically real estate related traffic from Google. Our website is www DOT SuiteLife DOT com. My question is about keyword analysis. We've had this sort of paralysis whereby we're nervous to start link building etc… for the wrong keywords. The problem we have is that most all keywords in our space are VERY competitive. So far the two tools we've used are: Google Keyword tool: About the top 20-40 keywords we'd like to go after are rated as HIGH competition. SEOmoz Keyword tool: Only the really too-obscure or long tailed keywords related to our business fall under a 50 rating. We were wondering if anyone could shed some light on how to further analyze keyword possibilities for our homepage when it seems like anything with any decent search traffic is super competitive. Ecommerce seo - competitors are using spammy links to rank HELP
After setting up SEO Moz and whilst waiting for it to crawl my site i have checked out my competitors who are ranking for the keywords i am going after. It appears from what i can see in OSE that they are ranking with back links from spammy looking sites and lots of exact match anchor text. I have tried to match a few links with what they have currently without getting myself into anything too spammy but i really don't want to follow how they have done it exactly. The niche i am in is pretty boring but the rewards are great but i am finding creating content and distributing it correctly difficult which is why i need some help. My site is roughly 9 months old and the product descriptions are hand written trying to give as much info as possible with a hint of personality so no cookie cutter back of the box descriptions. i have matched a few of the links from competitors which weren't too spammy and as relevant as i could get to my niche, i have also created articles for some article directories - all of which isn't really getting me very far and i am running out of ideas on how to create new content & the types of new content to help me get back links naturally. If any of you friendly guys could offer me some assistance in setting up a basic seo campaign which would help me target my keywords i would be very much in your debt

Would sharing the same IP address with competitors in the same market hurt SEO?
I work for the Chevy dealership in New York who is trying to rank against other Chevy dealerships in the same area. All the dealerships, including my client, are using the same Chevy endorsed CMS (Cobalt). I just noticed that all of these competitors, including my client, are using the SAME IP address. Would it be beneficial to SEO if we were to ditch the Cobalt platform and choose another one that gave us a unique IP address? Have any of you run into this before? Any help would be appreciated.

Effort for "moderate competition" keywords
I'm rather new to this, and while I'm getting some sense of everything I'm trying to figure out what kind of scope of work lays ahead of me. The keywords I'm looking to rank for are "moderate difficulty" -- somewhere between the 45%-55% "difficulty scale" on seomoz's keyword difficulty report. Assuming I have a number of "A-grade" (according to SEOmoz's reports) optimized pages for these keywords, how many links of a given quality level should I be looking at building up? I mean, of course, the more the better, but if I'm gunning for high DA/PA pages, am I looking at dozens here or hundreds of such links? I can imagine that any answer isn't going to come with much specificity, but if there was just an "idea" of the scale of backlinking involved here, that'd be great!
