Sitemap Contains Blocked Resources
-
Hey Mozzers,
I have several pages on my website that are for user search purposes only. They sort some products by range and answer some direct search queries users type into the site. They are basically just product collections that are else ware grouped in different ways.
As such I didn't wants SERPS getting their hands on them so blocked them in robots so I could add then worry free. However, they automatically get pulled into the sitemap by Magento.
This has made Webmaster tools give me a warning that 21 urls in the sitemaps are blocked by robots.
Is this terrible SEO wise?
Should I have opted to NOINDEX these URLS instead? I was concerned about thin content so really didnt want google crawling them.

Thanks for the latest responses guys
I have researched it into the grave and it the way Magento generates the sitemap makes it impossible for me to exclude these URLS.
I will just unblock them from robots, and make them all noindex. This seems to solve all problems, i will then block them when im 100% sure they are unindexed.
Thanks Again chaps.
Big help as always.

OK so first because some are indexed, if you block access, they will never be removed.
What you will need to do is add a noindex tag to the pages but don't block access to them so that Google can honour the noindex. Remove the pages via Search Console and once you have confirmed these are all removed from the index, you will be good to then block access via robots.txt.
As CleverPhD said, ideally you don't want pages in the index that can't be crawled, but it isn't likely to cause a penalty of any sort (I have a client with about 70-80 blocked - long story - no issues in 12 months) if you are stuck because of Megento - Perhaps research to see how others have got around this?

I would recommend that you try and get those pages out of your sitemap. If you look through the Google sitemap best practices, it states that the sitemap should be for pages that Googlebot can access.

URLs
URLs in XML sitemaps and RSS/Atom feeds should adhere to the following guidelines:
- Only include URLs that can be fetched by Googlebot. **A common mistake is **including URLs disallowed by robots.txt — which cannot be fetched by Googlebot, or including URLs of pages that don't exist.

Hi Andy,
I just checked and yes they were previously index'd and some of them still are.

Hi,
Is this terrible SEO wise?
Not really - it just means that Google can see that there is a page they can't access so are informing you of this. There is no negative penalty that is going to come from this. If there were old pages that are now 404's then it would be a different story.
I just want to be sure of something - were the pages previously open to Google? Are they currently indexed?

Sitemap submission for site migration?
Hi mozzers, We're about to migrate 4 domains into 1. Is there a particular way I should generate and submit the sitemap or should I just follow the same protocol as for one domain? Should I even worry submitting a sitemap when the site has this drupal module? I have access to the webmaster tools of all domains, should I do something specific on the accounts that are migrating besides submitting a sitemap? Thanks for letting me know!

Sitemap international websites
Hey Mozzers,Here is the case that I would appreciate your reply for: I will build a sitemap for .com domain which has multiple domains for other countries (like Italy, Germany etc.). The question is can I put the hreflang annotations in sitemap1 only and have a sitemap 2 with all URLs for EN/default version of the website .COM. Then put 2 sitemaps in a sitemap index. The issue is that there are pages that go away quickly (like in 1-2 days), they are localised, but I prefer not to give annotations for them, I want to keep clear lang annotations in sitemap 1. In this way, I will replace only sitemap 2 and keep sitemap 1 intact. Would it work? Or I better put everything in one sitemap? The second question is whether you recommend to do the same exercise for all subdomains and other domains? I have read much on the topic, but not sure whether it worth the effort. The third question is if I have www.example.it and it.example.com, should I include both in my sitemap with hreflang annotations (the sitemap on www.example.com) and put there it for subdomain and it-it for the .it domain (to specify lang and lang + country). Thanks a lot for your time and have a great day,Ani

Google Webmaster tools Sitemap submitted vs indexed vs Index Status
I'm having an odd error I'm trying to diagnose. Our Index Status is growing and is now up to 1,115. However when I look at Sitemaps we have 763 submitted but only 134 indexed. The submitted and indexed were virtually the same around 750 until 15 days ago when the indexed dipped dramatically. Additionally when I look under HTML improvements I only find 3 duplicate pages, and I ran screaming frog on the site and got similar results, low duplicates. Our actual content should be around 950 pages counting all the category pages. What's going on here?

Keyword stuffing found, how does Google treat my business name that contains keyword?
Hi, SEOmoz found 72 occurances of my keyword 'widgets' on our front page. I'm trying to cut it down but alot of the time the keyword appears alongside the company name 'Mega Widgets' . Will Google distinguish between the use of the keyword within a typical sentence and having it alongside the company name? Or should I put in a hypen (mega-widgets) or surround the company name with quotes ("mega widgets") to tell Google its a legit combination/phrase and I'm not trying to stuff in the keyword?

Linking C Class Blocks Problem
Hi 🙂 I've just discovered that my client, who has a medical practice, has created a series of micro sites about their doctors (around 10 or so). The problem is that they're on a shared host with the same C-class, providing no real link benefit at all. Would it be best to: A) Look for seperate C class hosts for each site & migrate B) Recreate the pages on the main site & 301 all doctor micro sites to new pages C) Leave as is and pursue other link building activites? Has anyone run into a similar issue before? Thanks a bunch! Woj

How to block/notify google that your domain has been added to sites with very low trustworthiness?
Hey Guys, I am writing to SEOmoz community because a problem occurred which I do not know how to solve: My domain (xyz.com) occured on very strange sites with very low trustworthiness (even blocked by google). Checking the site, I found out that all of the pictures were ALT=xyz.com. Could this hurt my position of my site on google rankings? How to prevent such actions, what should I do? Thanks for you help in advance!
