Structuring navigation for maximum effect

Hi,
I am working with a client (in the property niche) who has 200+ links on each page of their site mainly due to an extensive navigation menu. They have good domain authority (although some competitors have a lot better) and some excellent links from some fantastic domains but the keywords just aren’t moving. (Sidenote: most links point to the home page with some going to property detail pages not location pages which is where I’d like people to be landing).
I am reviewing the site structure and other technical aspects and have some questions regarding how the navigation is structured.
Firstly is 200+ links an ok number to have? Everything I read points to 100 being a magic number to aim for.
Secondly, the site navigation menu contains a list of locations. The first tier being country, the second tier drops down to list the regions within that country, then a third tier drop down appears to list the towns and cities in those regions. So from any page in the site you can drill down to town/city locations. (Sidenote: I have run Hotjar on the site which shows most people are using the search facility not the navigation menu to search)
Is this style of navigation ok or does it dilute the link authority/pagerank/juice being past to each page?
Would a better option be to have the first and second tier in the drop down then the third level town navigation to appear in the sidebar at page level in the appropriate sections? What effect would such a change have on rankings?

The conclusion I have come to is to try to keep page links to around 100 but that said there is a lot of conflicting info out there which is where the confusion comes in. I have read that 100-200 is ok now a days but essentially the more links you have the more the page authority will be diluted so it makes sense to keep links down.
On this topic Moz’s on page grader tool says
“Google has confirmed that the use of too many internal links on a page will not trigger a penalty, but it can influence the quantity of link juice sent through those links and dilute your page's ability to have search engines crawl, index, and rank link targets.
Recommendation: Scale down the number of internal links on your page to fewer than 100, if possible. At a minimum, try to keep navigation and menu links to fewer than 100. See http://moz.com/blog/how-many-links-is-too-many.”
In my situation there are some unnecessary and duplicated links so I looking at ways in which these can be reduced. My hope is that the page authority will then be channeled to the more important areas of the site.
Regarding location of the links, those in the navigation will probably carry more weight than those in the footer so I would try to include your most important links in the top part of the page. If you look at Moz’s home page for example the footer links are pointing to pages like Contact us, research tools, parents, api and Terms rather than duplicating the main navigation again.
That is my take on the situation anyway.

I have a similar situation with my site so I am interested in what is advised here as I've also thought maybe page sculpting is the answer but I've heard different answers on this subject. In my case , the 100 link rule wont work
From what I've read and heard in google hangouts etc
- 100 Links per page is out of date now as google can and does read more links than this.
- The types of links and where they are on the page does affect its importance. I.e Navigation and footer links are treated differently
- Do you have duplication in the links ? i.e anything that appears both in the footer and the nav or someone else on the page?
I remember John Mueller (Google) recently advised against Page Sculpting as it could more harm than good.
Please share what you find out as this is an interesting topic which will benefit many on there

Site Structure question?
Hey guys, Sorry for posting this again but the last thread got a bit too wayword. I'll sum it up better here. We're producing a WordPress theme every 3-6 months. Each is differently niched (eg: ecommerce, restaurant, magazine, etc...) Optimizing a URL/menu structure
Hi Mozzers, I'm working on Content Strategy at my job, and I'm close to making some recommendations on short/long-term direction. While I'm there, I want to tackle the URL/menu structure (correct term?), which is a bit of a mess as pages have been created without any consideration for it over time. For ease, let's just say we have 3 main subdirectories of the site (Section A-C), and let's also say that section A also has 3 important subdirectories. From a UX perspective at least, we want a page to look like: example.com/sectionA/subsectionAA/page1 but currently it's example.com/page1 We have dozens and dozens of these examples. To complicate matters a little further, Sections B and C have been earmarked to be consolidated into a new section (D), as they're currently confusing and overlapping, and create roadblocks in user journeys. So a page that is, say: example.com/sectionB/page2 may well want to be: example.com/sectionD/subsectionDA/page2 I'm comfortable enough with technically doing this, as I'm experienced enough in Drupal and have an agency on hand too, BUT - I don't know if there are any SEO pitfalls I need to be wary of when I'm doing this, beyond resubmitting sitemaps, and the trickle-down effects of redirects. Any advice, wise forum? thanks!

Permalink structure and categories on Joomla
Hey all, I'm handling a website for a youth telecom brand. We're migrating our website from droople to joomla with a completely new design. The entire revamp has been outsourced and I'm responsible for overseeing it. As it stands, our URL structure is something like www.xyz.com/category/item I want to change to category/child-category format: www.xyz.com/category/child-vategory/item In terms of SEO, how would this change impact results, pros and cons? Footer Navigation
We have links to our key pages at the top of the website:- Home Our Services Work Examples About Us But we have many more pages than this. In the footer of the website we have additional links to the individual services and pages such as FAQs and Customer Feedback. Does having the links here lessen their effectiveness in terms of SEO?

Navigation for search
We are getting ready to launch a site that has great navigation for users, but it is not so great for search engines. As long as we are ethical about it, does anyone see a downside to detecting a bot user agent and displaying different nav to it? I suppose some could consider it cloaking, but I noticed amazon uses this strategy and they don't seem to be getting a big penalty lol. We are not going to do anything shady with it, just offer the bot a different way to access our content. Any thoughts?

Value in a Bottom Navigation Bar
Hi Guys, I'm trying to decide whether or not to have a bottom navigation bar. I'm thinking of putting a mini site map at the bottom of each page. This mini site map will change depending on the page the user is on. I'm curious on the SEO value this will bring as I understand that there is very little SEO value from links this far down the page but also it could potentially bring the total number of links on that page to over 100. Does targeting more than one keyword or keyword phrase effect rankings?
Hi, We have a homepage where we are targeting three main keywords. 'Cheap books', 'buy books' and 'used books'. We are ranking well for cheap books and making progress on the more competitive buy and used. My question is how many keywords can you reasonably rank for on one page. We are targeting other keywords on other pages and having some success - but is three the maximum or is that too many?
