Keyword use in city specific "homepages"
-
My company, RightFit Personal Training, is a marketplace for people to find independent personal trainers based on preference. I am currently in the process of expanding nationally, and each city essentially has it's own homepage. Currently, the url of each city page ends in the name of the city only. For example, the url for the Houston page is www.rightfitpersonaltraining.com/houston/.
The issue here is that I actually wanted my contracted developer to add the state abbreviation as well as the words "personal trainers" to the end of each city page url. So what I really wanted to see out of the Houston personal training page was www.rightfitpersonaltraining.com/houston/tx/personal/trainers. Do you think it is worth it for me have my developer go back and change the URL structure of the city homepages to reflect the latter? This should also benefit the structure of the personal trainer profiles, because they could all fall under their specific city homepages. For example, I think it would be to my benefit if each trainer profile url ended in /city/state/personal/trainer/trainername. Thoughts?

So because my entire site is a marketplace of personal trainers (and only personal trainers) I won't need to create another category
Correct.
URL structure is such an infinitesimally small ranking factor, it's not worth your time trying to change it at this point.

Oh I see... So because my entire site is a marketplace of personal trainers (and only personal trainers) I won't need to create another category?
Alongside that, wouldn't it still help Google recognize us as a reputable marketplace of personal trainers if we end each city page in "city/trainers"? I am also a bit concerned because each trainer profile seems to fall under the general quick search page (http://www.rightfitpersonaltraining.com/personal-trainers/), but not under the trainer's corresponding city. My thought is that the SEO of each city page would strengthen if each trainer profile was listed as "rfpt.com/city/trainers/trainername". Currently, the trainer profiles are listed as "rfpt.com/personal-trainers/trainer/city-state-trainername".
Thank you all so much again for all the help. I really appreciate it. This means a LOT to me, as having a strong organic search presence is essential to the success of my business.

Well, I should have clicked through to the link...sorry. Your page is fine as-is. I had thought there were multiple categories of people/products on those pages. IF/WHEN you add those at a future date, that's when you'll want to build out the /Houston/trainers page with trainers (and no redirect would be required).

Thanks so much for the response, David. Here is my last question... If I make these URL changes, will it hurt my SEO by causing more redirects?
-
I think in the era of mobile, the shorter your URLs are, the better. So I'd go with
rfpt.com/houston/trainers, which it sounds like would also be easier to implement from a development perspective.
Copy Yelp's implementation in terms of site architecture and getting around what Josh is referring to as 'doorway' content above.

Thanks for the quick response, Josh.
So don't you think that I would be better off changing the structure from the current format of "rfpt.com/city" to the more descriptive "rfpt.com/city/state/personal-trainers"? We are a directory of personal trainers, so I think Google values what we provide.

GSC: Change of Domain Not Processed, Despite Saying "Approved"?
Hi folks, I've just completed a straightforward olddomain -> newdomain migration. All the redirects were done on 7th Feb. I submitted the change of domain request on 7th Feb. All seemed fine - as can be seen in the attached. It's now 19th March and our pals at GSC are still saying that the domain migration is ongoing. I've never had this take so long before; 2-3 days tops. Their results are tanking as I can't geo target and more features in GSC are out of action as it's 'locked' due to this migration (I just get a screen as per the attached). Thoughts? Shall I risk withdrawing the request and starting anew? The old "turn it off and on again"? Thanks! hJXKC

Usage of keywords in URL
Hi everyone, I'm trying to optimize our website and I'm not sure what's ideal for our URL structure. We have two products: one of them is focused on B2C & the other one on B2B.
Technical SEO | | Klouwers
Our homepage is focused on the B2C product. For our B2B product, I'm not sure what's ideal. The URL for our 'homepage' of the B2B product is ourdomain.com/software. We have different target groups for our B2B software, and therefore different pages on our website. Which URL would be best to use for the keyword personal trainer software?
1. ourdomain.com/software/personal-trainer-software
2. ourdomain.com/software/personal-trainer0 -
Getting a ton of "not found" errors in Webmaster tools stemming from /plugins/feedback.php
So recently Webmaster tools showed a million "not found" errors with the url "plugins/feedback.php/blah blah blah." A little googling helped me find that this comes from the Facebook comment box plugin. Apparently some changes recently have made this start happening. The question is, what's the right fix? The thread I was reading suggested adding "Disallow: /plugins/feedback.php" to the robots.txt file and marking them all fixed. Any ideas?

Rel="no follow" for All Links on a Site that Charges for Advertising
If I run a site that charges other companies for listing their products, running banner advertisements, white paper downloads, etc. does it make sense to "no follow" all of their links on my site? For example: they receive a profile page, product pages and are allowed to post press releases. Should all of their links on these pages be "no follow"? It seems like a gray area to me because the explicit advertisements will definitely be "no followed" and they are not buying links, but buying exposure. However, I still don't know the common practice for links from other parts of their "package". Thanks

Keywords
Hi All, If I had a site about a cartoon character (for example). When I add keywords to the 'keywords' meta tag, would I be best to put specific phrases such as Cartoon Character, Cartoon Character on TV, Cartoon Character on Television or would the following have the same effect: Cartoon Character, Tv, Movie, Television I was wondering if having the above instance might be less effective as the search engines might read TV, Movie, Television as less relevant to Cartoon Character. Hope that makes sense! 🙂

Would this be considered keyword cannabalization?
If I have an article, titled 7 signs of unhealthy eating and the title tag for five different pages looks like this: keyword | article title ex: Binge Eating | 7 Signs of Unhealthy Eating ex: Lack of Fruits & Vegetables | 7 Signs of Unhealthy Eating etc, etc.
