Strategies for generating a knowledge panel for brand queries
-
Hello, I'm looking for any new ideas or experiences that might help in generating a knowledge panel for a brand query. I'm working with a company that has a strong brand, over 200K searches for the brand name alone each month, but they don't have a knowledge panel. When you search the brand name, the right side of the search results is just blank white space.
Here are some of the things they do have, which tend to trigger a KP:
- Well built-out Wikipedia page
- Pages on Wikidata, Freebase, Crunchbase
- Home page organization schema
- Home page schema using sameas to connect the company to their social profiles, wikipedia page, and Freebase and Wikidata
- Hundreds of mentions in national press outlets
- Verified Twitter and Pinterest profiles (the same type of verification celebrities get)
Generally, this all (and maybe even a lot less than this), would trigger a KP when you searched the brand name, but it just doesn't. No branded queries trigger a KP. It's interesting, because even the three smaller companies that they've acquired had (and still have) knowledge panels when you search those brands.
So, I'm wondering if anyone has seen or worked through this behavior before? Or, even if not, any thoughts or ideas that we can do to nudge Google towards a KP for a branded search?
Thanks!

Cool, thanks for the quick reply! I see a local KP in both instances (with location set outside of Houston), but they look great either way.

1. we got both - search for "Hyperlinks Media" or "Hyperlinks Media Houston"
2. Yes, it was Google My Business rep. We are GYBO partner, so, it was one of those guys, which, I believe, is the same as GMB rep.

Hey Dmitrii, thanks for your answer. Two quick questions for clarity:
1. Did you get a brand or local KP to show up? At the end, you said, "they gave us some ideas to apply on our side to improve local listings presence", which seems to imply a local panel rather than a brand panel.
2. Who at Google did you speak to? Was it the Google My Business reps?
Thanks!

Hi there.
We had the same problem and got it solved recently. First of all, make sure that all schema is correct. Also make sure you have verified g+ account for that business (apparently it's important). Also see if knowledge graph comes up if you search for "brandname reviews". And call Google. In our case, they found some technical issues on their side, and while they were fixing it, they gave us some ideas to apply on our side to improve local listings presence.
Hope this helps.

My competitor is ranking above me for a branded search in Google. How can I come back on top?
I work with an organization that is ranking #2 for a branded search term, second to a competitor. They have zero similarity between their names, and we've worked with them to up their SEO game around all major areas (one drawback: SquareSpace is killing their site speed). Their DA is 59, the competitor's DA is 77. What are some smart, specific ways that we can help our client come back out on top?

How long should you leave keywords on your site related to your old brand?
We rebranded our organization 2 years ago. We decided to leave some of our archived content with our old name because it was already serving link juice to the website. How long should you leave keywords like that on your site related to an old brand?

Company name in title tags for lesser known brands - yes or no?
Hi Mozzers I read an interesting post over on Authority Labs this morning about title tag length and how Google changes the way they are displayed. The author Brian advises that, "if you want your title tag to remain unchanged, it's worth making sure that you're staying within the 50-59 character window and that your titles fit with the content of the page". This got me thinking... Given the limited amount of title tag characters that are now shown in the SERPs, I find it difficult to include a primary keyword, secondary keyword and the company name. So, if you're a lesser known brand is it worth sacrificing your company name in the title tags of deeper pages for a secondary keyword to help with rankings, or even a special offer to grab a users eye in the SERPs? What are people's views on this? Thanks Anthony

Why google does not show my site on my branding keyword?
Hi, I am the site owner of http://www.lankahq.net. It is a youtube video hosted website. 95% of the video contents are daily telecasting TV shows and categorized to make easy to find the specific video of the day of preferred program of the viewer. About 1 year ago suddenly disappeared my site from the google. Before happened that it was performing very well in search. Google showed my site contents within few minutes after I update in their search results when someone search for that. At the moment it does not show even some one search for "lankahq". It showing only if search for "lankahq.net", "lankahq.com" or "www.lankahq.net" something like a search keyword related to my domain name. Some other websites have added my branding keyword LankaHQ as a user of their site and they showing on top of Google. But not mine. It is much appreciated if someone can have a look on this matter. I can not find where is the problem.

How to optimise for search results which are affected by Query Deserves Freshness?
I am looking to rank a clients site for certain keywords which have a huge exact local search volume in the 200,000 region. Many of these keywords are celebrity names like Victoria Beckham, Pippa Middleton. etc. 9 times out of 10 these people are in the news and the first page is taken up by new article/news results. My client is a large media publishing company so their site is very relevant. Does anyone know how to optimise for getting on the first page with these types of queries? Thanks Barry
