Ranking well for 3 keyword phrase but not for 2?
-
Hi all,
We have a site that sells whisky and is ranking well for a specific 3 keyword phrase for example "glendronach hielan whisky" (brand, product, type) which is great but the site isn't doing well for 2 keyword phrase for example "glendronach whisky" or "glendronach hielan".
I'm a little confused as to why it wouldn't rank higher for the 2 keyword phrases given that there present in the 3 keyword phrase. Is there a massive jump between ranking well between 3 and 2 keyword phrases?
If so what could anyone suggest to try and rank on the 2's?

Not surprising JonOS. If you've done a good enough job with the on-page, that's usually what's remaining.

Thanks Donna, I've done just that and had a closer look at the competition and I'm leaning towards the lack of back links being the factor holding it back.

Thanks Tammy, Some good points there for me to take a closer look at.

Hi JonOS,
The answer is going to depend on the strength of your competition but yes, as a general guideline, it's much harder to rank for a 2-word phrase than it is for a 3-word phrase. That's because it's less specific. The less specific the search term, the greater the amount and strength of the competition.
What can you do to rank better for the 2-word phrase? I suggest you plug your 2-word phrase into the Moz Keyword Difficulty Tool so you can see the relative strengths of your competition and devise a plan of action based on that.

A URL would be beneficial to answer this question. That being said, ensure that you are using the phrase in all your on page optimization efforts.
IE: Title, Description, Schema, breadcumbs, navigation, content, h1 & Alt tags. These are both relevant and more than likely you are ranking due to the auto answer by Google's infamous "Did you mean" or the auto complete. Next, would be are other pages on your site more relevant for the shorter term? Is the traffic value really that significant that you would prefer two over three? Do you have anchor text throughout the rest of the site utilizing the two word phrase? Links from third party sites with that term? Have you been penalized for keyword stuffing for that term? There are many variables, without an audit- it's difficult to say.

Keyword stuffing as per the on-page grader
Hi Moz Community, I've recently become a Moz Pro user and I very impressed with the insights that it has to offer. However, I have been using the on-page grader to evaluate this page and it suggests that I am using the keyword "kiln dried logs" too many times and not to use more than 15 times. I have a slight dilemma because my product titles all contain this keyword and I wanted to get somebody's take on where the "15 repetitions" comes from and if it is better for me to strip this keyword out of my product titles to fall within the guidelines? Should I optimize just my main category page for this keyword at the expense of potentially losing traffic for my product pages? Any input would be much appreciated.

On Page Optimization, F on all keywords?
On our website we have all F's even though we have the targeted keyword in the title, url, meta desc, h1, body and some of the img alt's. They still show zero uses of the keyword. Are we missing something here or is this some kind of bug or glitch? Any help or advice is appreciated, Thanks. 301 Redirect and SEO Rankings
I recently restructured my webpage URL's (about 300 ~ 75% of my total website) to make the URL paths more SEO friendly. Within a few hours of restructuring the pages, I did a 301 redirect to my old URL's and pointed them to the new pages. I have seen ~ 50% drop in organic traffic. I started the restructuring exercise 14 days ago and finished it a few hours back. I have 3 questions: How long will it take for me to recover my old traffic. Will I recover most of it or some of it? Due to a glitch in the specified path, some old URL's were wrongly redirected (this happened with 9 pages to be exact). I will explain exactly what happened: www.redirct.com/superseonow1 ---- redirected to ---- www.redirectnow.com/seonow1 **/superseonow was 301 redirected to /seonow. After 3 days I realize that /superseonow1 was actually /supernow1. The same thing happened to 9 pages - /superseonow2, /superseonow3 ..... ** I have removed all the wrong redirects. When I tried to enter the correct (old) paths now and 301 redirect them to the new paths, the page was not found using the old paths. Should I redirect the old paths to the New ones even now? 3. Finally, in how much time after you change the page structure should you use the 301 redirect. Since I had two different teams working on this job, there could have been up to a 24 hour gap between the redirection.

Why I am ranking for irrelevant keywords
My website is e-commerce and used to rank for all industry related keywords like buy widgets, cheap widgets, online widgets in top10. And suddenly my website was hacked and to resolve this hacking issue i have re-write all my dynamic urls into static pages after that new pages are indexed and ranking well. But after few months i have notice few changes in keywords ranking going down. But suddenly after Google Algo (EMD/Panda) update on Sept 27 i lost all my positions. And then according to Google guidelines i have worked on over optimization and low quality pages. I have removed all tones of low quality pages from SERP and simultaneously worked on url re-write. But i have notice small percent of changes in keyword positions like when Google Algo (EMD/Panda) is rolled out i lost my keyword positions from 1st page to 200 page and after working on over optimization and low quality pages the keywords are came back to 100 pages. Recently i have notice that my web pages ranking for irrelevant keywords. For example, let's say i used to rank for home page for these keywords; buy widgets, cheap widgets, online widgets but now am ranking for different inner pages say (guide pages). Can any one suggest me whats wrong..

Homepage Hogging Too Many Keyword Ranks?
Hello: I've been the publisher and SEO for Indie Rock Cafe since starting it in 2007. It's done great, and has #1 - #5 positions in Google for many strong keywords like "best new albums", "best new bands", "top new bands", "popular indie rock songs", and so on. However, for many of the results, the homepage keeps popping up over and over again. I thought I'd done everything right to get other pages on the site to rank for top keywords. Another potential issue is that I expected the homepage to have a 6 PR by now, but it seems stuck on 5. Any ideas? Insight from SEOs and experts is always enlightening and helpful, so thank you in advance for your thoughts and advice.
