Sitemaps and dynamic pages
-
Hi all,
I have a gigantic website and they are adding another subdirectory to it. My question is regarding html sitemaps for better optimisation.
1. Should a keyword focussed front end (html) sitemap be made for all the dynamic URLs or
2. Should a category focussed front end (html) sitemap be made for all the dynamic URLs
what would be your approach to doing a sitemap with thousands of pages with a structure like Directory > Sub directory > Subdirectory > Files

Hey Malika,
If you're talking about HTML sitemaps for a site with thousands of pages then I would even stay away from it and go for the XML sitemaps that you could add to speed up indexation. The keyword focused ones won't help you enough for now to make life easier to speed up indexation and might even cause bigger issues as you'll have thousand or hundreds of links on one page.
Martijn.

Validated pages on GSC displays 5x more pages than when performing site:domain.com?
Hi mozzers, When checking the coverage report on GSC I am seeing over 649,000 valid pages https://cl.ly/ae46ec25f494 but when performing site:domain.com I am only seeing 130,000 pages. Which one is more the source of truth especially I have checked some of these "valid" pages and noticed they're not even indexed?

Page not being ranked properly
Hi, Wondering if someone could possibly shed some light on why some of our pages are not being ranked properly on Google. For example this page https://www.mypetzilla.co.uk/dog-breeds Keyword "Dog Breeds" we can't be found on and we are absolutely baffled why? Could it be that we are listing all 100 and something dog breeds on one page? Should we introduce pagination or load more as user scrolls down. This page has been up for at least 4 years. Any suggestion or advice would be much appreciated. Many thanks

Editing A Sitemap
Would there be any positive effect from editing a site map down to a more curated list of pages that perform, or that we hope they begin to perform, in organic search? A site I work with has a sitemap with about 20,000 pages that is automatically created out of a Drupal plugin. Of those pages, only about 10% really produce out of search. There are old sections of the site that are thin, obsolete, discontinued and/or noindexed that are still on the sitemap. For instance, would it focus Google's crawl budget more efficiently or have some other effect? Your thoughts? Thanks! Best... Darcy

Sitemap error
Hey Guys Everytime I run the tester through google webmaster tools - I keep getting an error that tells me "Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead." An idea how to go about fixing this without changing the site around? https://www.zenory.co.nz/sitemap I have seen competitors sitemaps look similar to mine. Cheers

Can a home page penalty cause a drop in rankings for all pages?
All my main keywords have dropped out of the SERPS. Could it be that the home page (the strongest) page has been devalued and therefore 'link juice' that used to spread throughout the site is no longer doing so. Would this cause all other pages to drop? I just can't understand how all my pages have lost rankings. The site is still indexed so there's no problem there.

Should I index tag pages?
Should I exclude the tag pages? Or should I go ahead and keep them indexed? Is there a general opinion on this topic?

Should the sitemap include just menu pages or all pages site wide?
I have a Drupal site that utilizes Solr, with 10 menu pages and about 4,000 pages of content. Redoing a few things and we'll need to revamp the sitemap. Typically I'd jam all pages into a single sitemap and that's it, but post-Panda, should I do anything different?
