Submitting my URL on web/business/service directories
-
Does it make sense to submit a business URL in as many relevant web/business directories as possible when kicking off a link building campaign? Submitting a free listing is obviously better than nothing, but when does it make sense to pay extra for a premium listing profile on some of these directories? There are just so many and a lot of them appear spammy, even though some of my competitors are getting traffic from them. Any advice on this would be great!

Thanks. I'm certainly familiar with DMOZ and Yahoo, as they have the highest DA. Haven't seen BOTW, so I'll check that out.

In general there are three major directories which can offer value to most any site:
DMOZ (free)
Yahoo (around $300)
BOTW (around $150)
In my experience the rest of the general directories are a poor use of your time. A few months later you will find you submitted your site to hundreds of directories and you would be lucky to have 5 visible followed links to show for your efforts. Even then the value of those links is quite low.
I agree with James. The list he shared offers some solid directories which you should review to see if your site is in alignment with the topics they cover. If you find a directory related to your site then that can be of value.

Hi,
My advice is to submit them if they seem highly relevant to your industry, they can provide some small amount of weight for your link building yet it is not going to be hugely beneficial.
Some great analysis was done by Rand on directories in the past here:
If the directory seems spamy then it is probably not advisable to use imo.
Also for further directories they can be viewed here:

Making a custom web directory
I am wondering if it is beneficial to launch a social bookmarking website based on Semantic Scuttle [http://semanticscuttle.sourceforge.net/demo] in order to gain inbound links. For the sake of example, say my industry is ebooks. I would of course add links to all of my products to the site. In addition, I would want to add links to competitors products to the site to make the site actually useful and not look like spam. On the face of it, is this a good idea? Secondly, I of course wouldn't want to be helping out competitors, so would any of these actions be advisable? add nofollow links to all links except those pointing to my site. ads or featured listings pointing to my links. I make it so only voted on links are dofollow. Thus, competitors could actually get links from my site. Naturally, I would vote on all my submissions. The idea of the site would actually be to provide a meaningful service. Once it's done I would want to get people linking to it. Any advice? Thanks! Edit: I added scenario #3 which I think is probably the best option, if this is even a good idea. I would also make some static content to really make this a good resource!

Does anybody do directory submissions anymore?
I came across this list http://www.seomoz.org/directories and was wondering what everybody's opinions are on using directories for link building. Are they a complete waste of time and money? Does anybody get positive results from doing directory submissions? Cheers Al

Google disavow DMOZ/ODP spam sites?
Hello Looking into links to my one of my sites (over 10 years old) I've found that along with some bad spammy links, around 80% of my inbound links are from directories that are exact copies of ODP. Should I be concerned about / asking for removal / disavowing these links? Normally I would be trying to get rid of low quality links like this, but since they are ODP clones I'm not sure it's worth the effort. The sites openly state that their data is from ODP (Open Directory Project), but does this mean Google ignores them? I could spend my whole life swatting these links. Thoughts? Edit: I'm hoping for suggestions that specifically reference the ODP clone site situation. I did not create these links, I guess I should have made that more clear.

Blog Directories
Will links from blog directories to our subfolder-located blog within our website help the ranking of our overall site? In other words, will it just help the rankings of the main blog page (where the directory links are pointing to), or will it pass the link juice to the rest of the site? Thanks!

Directories and duplicate content.
Part of our link building strategy for a dentist is to submit their site to several relevant directories. If I enter the same description in each directory, is it possible that Google will consider this duplicate content and prevent link juice from being passed back to the dentist's site? Thanks folks, Jason

Parameter In URL passing SEO Value
Helllo I need help understanding the following scenario. We do campaign tracking for number of our sites using urt parameters. These are normally PR links with utm parameters. I am not sure if we should remove the utm parameter and forget about tracking the links completely if it offers an added SEO value with direct links OR we just keep using utm parameters for PR tracking and use canonical tag instead on respective pages. For me SEO value is most important. But i am trying to understand what i am losing or gaining. Kindly sugggest Thanks

Directories and Link Building
I was reading a post by Eric Enge, http://www.seomoz.org/blog/role-of-directories-in-link-building and nobody talked about in the comments, so I want to see what you think: Considering that get some bad links from punished directories is bad for your site, it's worth to use site submissions softwares, like SubmitEaze, that promisses a 1,000 submits?
