SEO - Ecommerce Small Business Quick Wins
-
Hi
I have a few hurdles I need some help with.
I work on an ecommerce site, it's huge but I'm the only SEO.
I've identified areas where we can make progress in rankings - we already have pages appearing for those terms, but they still need help to be pushed higher.
My issue is - if it's a product listing page & we have all the SEO foundations here already, how can we push this even further? No one in the company wants too much content on this page taking away from products & I've tried adding a small amount - with no results. I know UX is something to be looked at, but I need support from others so this will be slow.
Does anyone agree that writing user guides, hub pages & articles that this is a good next step? My only worry is - these pages will also be new and take time to rank so will they help the category pages enough? How can I maximise them?
I'm also the only SEO, so really need to pick my battles.
Thanks
Becky

Thanks very much for the advice, spot on as always

Our first priority is to write content that answers the questions that our customers are asking. This is usually easy because we tell this information by phone and by email everyday.
The next priority is to write content that explains how to use a product, how to fix it, how to select it. These articles can take a couple days for the author to research and write. A second person will be working on images or photos or data to illustrate the article. The people who enter the site through these article page often purchase consumable supplies, replacement parts or the primary item described in the article.
Although the cost of these articles are very high, they are usually evergreen and can be on your site attracting traffic and referring sales for a long time. But these are the articles that give your site a reputation for being a great source of content and a trusted place to do business. They are not "quick wins".
They are long term investments. Most business owners would balk if they saw how much time can go into the articles and the average weekly sales. They got to consider that there are 52 weeks in a year and the article will produce its results over time.

Thanks for your reply
I'm definitely not looking to write rubbish content and put it up for rankings.
I think where I struggle is, know where to prioritise & actually understanding the areas I'm writing about and what the customer may want - some are niche and technical, so a lot of research and work needs to go into them.
But you're right, management need to understand writing good content is very time consuming
Thanks!

**Content isn't king, the User is. **
Nice! This is the first time I have seen this type of statement, yet it is so obvious. Content that doesn't meet the mark is a waste of your money and ignored by the visitor.
At our office a little under 50% of staff time is spent on customer service and filling the order. A little over 50% of staff time is spent making the content. A lot of businesses that can't get traction think that 10% or even 5% spent on content is out of balance.
Management at too many businesses don't realize that they are in a competitive environment where there are only ten positions on the first page of Google and only about the top three get viable traffic after Google slaps four ads at the top and eight shopping results on the right.

This is by far the best advice you could have given, tricks and tactics only serve part of an issue while strategic planning and a forceful hand can prove to blanket the issue in solution + results.
More straight forward advice needs to be given like this, and I'm glad there are folks like yourself on here speaking about such.
Thanks!
Also to add on a bit,
Most SEOs would never have many issues if they would step back away from the " latest & greatest tactics " and applied more effort towards the user. Plan and fulfill their needs and think through the eyes of your customers. You won't have to devise clever content, you'll already know what is needed and even how to target it.
Content isn't king, the User is.

A lot of people think that organic rankings and sales happen through tricks and tweaks. They instead are wrested away from competitors through planning, skill and force. It comes down to a battle of resources. If a company wants to succeed, they need to put up enough resources to become competitive and at the same time apply them smartly. The more force you put into it and the earlier it is applied, the greater the chances of success. If I was management at your company, you would be getting a lot more help and we would be hiring authors and illustrators.

Hi Becky,
The company wants sales I presume? Content=traffic=sales. As you correctly mention you should add more content. You can also do this with a small introduction text and than a Read More which unfolds when clicked on. A different way is to put a small introduction at the top and the whole story down the page. This way you are not hiding the text and it does help you rank better.
There's a good Q&A about it here on: Moz
Furthermore I would indeed go for extra pages. In my industry ( Garden And Wood building materials) it works really well to write "how to" pages. You get good traffic, they stay on your site for a long time and it influences the overall ranking in a good way.
Hope it helps, Good luck!

Meta refresh bad for SEO
Hi there, Some external developers have created a wishlist for a website that allows visitors to add products to a wishlist and then send an enquiry. Very similar set-up to a shopping basket really (without the payment option). However, this wishlist lives in a separate iframe and refreshes every 30 seconds to reflect any items visitors add to their wishlist. This refreshing is done with a meta refresh. I'm aware of the obvious usability issue that the visitor's product only appears after 30 seconds in their wishlist. However, are there also any SEO issues due to the refreshing of the iframe every 30 seconds? Please let me know, whether small or large issues.

Multiple Ecommerce sites, same products
We are a large catalog company with thousands of products across 2 different domains. Google clearly knows that the sites are connected. Both domains are fairly well known brands - thousands of branded searches for each site per month. Roughly half of our products overlap - they appear on both sites. We have a known duplicate content issue - both sites having exactly the same product descriptions, and we are working on it. We've seen that when a product has different content on the 2 sites, frequently, both pages get to page 2 of the SERPs, but that's as far as it goes, despite aggressive white hat link building tactics. 1. Is it possible to get the same product pages on page 1 of the SERPs for both sites? (I think I know the answer...) 2. Should we be canonicalizing (is that a word?) products across the sites? This would get tricky - both sites have roughly the same domain authority, but in different niches. Certain products and keywords naturally rank better on 1 site or the other depending on the niche.

Scaling A Small Agency
I have reached a placed where I now have several clients and we're charged closer to the $2k/month mark for our SEO services. We normally partner with the client's inhouse copywriter or content person so that's a piece we don't have to take on in house...however we do provide content strategy for their person to execute. I'm now at a place where I want to scale and offer link building but quality link building services. I do it all myself and I really can't keep up with the time management and amount of labor that goes into quality link building. We're not looking to outsource or pay $10/hr for link building as I know we won't get the quality and impact our client's want. Can anyone speak to hiring people for SEO/Link building purposes for a small SEO agency? Right now it's myself and 2 interns, but even the interns don't fully know SEO. Just trying to figure out how best to proceed with scaling and how much to pay a part timer we bring in house. Also....how on earth do you all manage link building projects for multiple clients. I hope the $2K I'm charging is a fair rate...I feel like I should be charging more.

Page Speed Factors For SEO
Hey Guys, I have developed a page and optimised it. I have got a dilemma, I have 2 variants of the optimised page I could use. The page is responsive and uses bootstrap from an external CDN. The 2 variants: External CDN - This is adding an an extra request and is delivering the entire framework (not ideal for mobile) I've looked in the node/grunt.js route (+unCSS) to remove redundant CSS, which led me to my next variant. Inline CSS. After doing some grunt.js work I shaved out the redundant code from the framework then added it inline. I will also point out that all assets are optimised, all CSS/JS/HTML is minifed. In terms for score the 1st variant is less than the second, but I believe that most users of the internet already have bootstrap cached due to it being so common. The ultimate question comes down to ranking, I'm not entirely sure where I draw the line between development and SEO (I will also ask in Stack Overflow). Which one would rank better? all other factors being equal.

Outbrain Select SEO Implications
A member of our marketing team wants to use Outbrain Select to curate content to augment the original content we have on our site. http://www.outbrain.com/select/how This content would be taken from other pages on the site and shown through as though it is on our site through javascipt. Obviously this page would be setup as a no-index. This seems to me like something Google would frown on. Does anyone know the SEO implications behind using a tool like this? I'm concerned google will see links to a blank page no-index page and find it suspect.

Ecommerce SEO - Indexed product pages are returning 404's due to product database removal. HELP!
Hi all, I recently took over an e-commerce start-up project from one of my co-workers (who left the job last week). This previous project manager had uploaded ~2000 products without setting up a robot.txt file, and as a result, all of the product pages were indexed by Google (verified via Google Webmaster Tool). The problem came about when he deleted the entire product database from our hosting service, godaddy and performed a fresh install of Prestashop on our hosting plan. All of the created product pages are now gone, and I'm left with ~2000 broken URL's returning 404's. Currently, the site does not have any products uploaded. From my knowledge, I have to either: canonicalize the broken URL's to the new corresponding product pages, or request Google to remove the broken URL's (I believe this is only a temporary solution, for Google honors URL removal request for 90 days) What is the best way to approach this situation? If I setup a canonicalization, would I have to recreate the deleted pages (to match the URL address) and have those pages redirect to the new product pages (canonicalization)? Alex

Effects on SEO with CDN
Should we be concerned about any adverse consequences to our site's SEO value when moving the site's assets (javascript files and css files) to a CDN (Akamai)?
