301ing Pages & Moving Content To Many Other Domains
-
Recently started working with a large site that, for reasons way beyond organic search, wants to forward internal pages to a variety of external sites.
Some of these external sites that would receive the content from the old site are owned, admin'd and/or hosted by the old site, most are not. All of the sites receiving content would be a better topic fit for that content than the original site. The process is not all at once, but gradual over time. No internal links on the old site to the old page or the new site/url would exist post content move and 301ing. The forwarding is mostly to help Google realize the host site of this content is not hosting duplicate content, but is the one true copy. Also, to pick up external links to the old pages for the new host site.
It's a little like domain name change, but not really since the old site will continue to exist and the new sites are a variety of new/previously existing sites that may or may not share ownership/admin etc.
In most cases, we won't be able to change any external link pointing to the original site and will just be 301ing the old url to the contents new home on another site.
Since this is pretty unusual (like I wouldn't get up in the morning and choose to do this for the heck of it), here are my three questions:
-
Is there any organic search risk to the old site or the sites receiving the old content/301 in this maneuver?
-
Will the new sites pick up the link equity benefit on pages that had third party/followed links continuing to point to the old site but resolving via the 301 to this totally different domain?
-
Any other considerations?
Thanks! Best... Mike

This is a great metaphor:
"Finally, will moving all of this content damage Site A? Yes. This is cutting out body parts similar to arms and organs. When this content leaves the traffic flow into Site A will drop. The number of linking domains and pages will drop. The offer of this content to entertain existing visitors will be gone. The size of that loss will determine the impact. Rankings of remaining content might fall if the loss is great. If arms and legs or heart or brain are extracted then expect Site A to suffer. But if lesser things are lost then the damage will be lower but some damage will happen. Search engines and visitors will all notice. Enthusiastic visitors will find the content in its new home and they might move with it."
Will definitely be using this for future explanations!

Hi Mike,
EGOL's answer is a good one. You should mark it so (hint, hint, nudge, nudge, know what I mean?)
Cheers,

Hi Egol,
Once again I am acquainted with why you are objectively ranked #1 in the Moz community. That was encyclopedic!
Yes, I should have mentioned that I understand site A losing externally linked content would hurt site A.
What I was really getting at, which you answered, is that it's no search crime against humanity to effectively part-out a site. It's not viewed by Google as "what the heck are you doing?" ... for all concerned.
Thank you for the insight.
Best... Mike

Will this help the sites that receive the content? Yes. They will acquire content that they can display to their visitors. That content should appear in the search engines and pull in traffic. The 301s will redirect links that might help rankings and deliver click-through traffic.
Will the content rank in the search engines as well on the new sites as it did on the old sites? Maybe better, maybe worse, probably not the same. When you move content from Site A to Site B, that content loses the domain authority that it enjoyed on Site A. If Site A is powerful, authoritative and topically relevant to the moved content and Site B is not, then lower rankings in the search engines for the content on Site B would be expected. If Site B is more powerful, authoritative and topically relevant then rankings might be higher there, Maybe. No guarantees.
The value of the redirected links is questionable. The links into the content on Site A that will be redirected. If they duplicate the domains or pages of the links already hitting Site B then the lift that they will give to Site B will be minimal. However, if they are all uniquely new to Site B then their lift should be positive.
Finally, will moving all of this content damage Site A? Enthusiastic visitors will find the content in its new home and they might move with it.
Content moves from one site to another happen often. Sometimes the content is moved for strategic purposes, sometimes tactical purposes, sometimes it is sold for a nice price. There are many reasons. The alternative to the 301 is the rel=canonical. Each has its advantages, risks and shortcomings. The rel=canonical allows Site A to continue to use the content but any ranking value supposedly transfers to Site B. How much? Only the search engines know how they process that. My experience with rel=canonical is that it is valuable to consolidate the power of content that appears in multiple places on a single site. I don't see it sending a lot of value from one domain to another. Just an observation. I don't know of anyone who has written the results of carefully controlled experiments.

Http & https domain names
We currently have a site which we found SEM Rush to show that their were duplicate pages for the site. Upon further inspection we realized this was because there existed both http:// and https:// Versions of the site. Is this a problem for Google that the site appears for both http:// and https:// and that there are therefore duplicate versions of the site?

Ecommerce Site - Duplicate product descriptions & SKU pages
Hi I have a couple of questions regarding the best way to optimise SKU pages on a large ecommerce site. At the moment we have 2 landing pages per product - one is the primary landing page with no SKU, the other includes the SKU in the URL so our sales people & customers can find it when using the search facility on the site. The SKU landing page has a canonical pointing to the primary page as they're duplicates. Is this the best way? Or is it better to have the one page with the SKU in the URL? Also, we have loads of products with the very similar product descriptions, I am working on trying to include a unique paragraph or few sentences on these to improve the content - how dangerous is the duplicate content within your own site? I know its best to have totally unique content, but it won't be possible on a site with thousands of products and a small team. At the moment I am trying to prioritise the products to update. Thank you 🙂

Thin Content to Quality Content
How should i modify content from thin to high quality content. Somehow i realized that my pages where targetted keywords didn't had the keyword density lost a massive ranking after the last update whereas all pages which had the keyword density are ranking good. But my concern is all pages which are ranking good had all the keyword in a single statement like. Get ABC pens, ABC pencils, ABC colors, etc. at the end of a 300 word content describing ABC. Whereas the pages which dropped the rankings had a single keyword repeated just twice in a 500 word article. Can this be the reason for a massive drop. Should i add the single statement like the one which is there on pages ranking good? Is it good to add just a single line once the page is indexed or do i need to get a fresh content once again along with a sentence of keyword i mentioned above?

Page structure and how to optimize old content
SITE STRUCTURE I am trying to optimize the structure of our site Dreamestatehuahin.com. Getting a visible sitemap of my page make me realized it was not a pyramid as I expected it to be but instead very flat. I Would be happy for some advise on how to structure my site in future aswell how to optimize certain place on the page that i think need a change. 1: structure on posts. Maybe I misunderstand how post works in wordpress or something happen with my theme. When I look at my page sitemap my page is VERY flat because permalinks setting I chose the setting as post name (recommended in most articles). http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/sample-post What I actually believed was that post name was place after /blog/ like: http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/blog/sample-post I would be a good idea to do like this right? Should I add some SEO text on the top of my blog page before the actually posts. Or would this be a bad idea due to pagination causing double content? Could one do 4 blogs in one site and replace the name “blog” in the url with a keywords http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/real-estate-announcement/sample-post http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/hua-hin-attractions/sample-post 2) Pages Based on property type From our top menu, i have made links under for sael using wordpress property types http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/property-type/villa/ http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/property-type/hot-deals/ http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/property-type/condominium/ Earlier I found that these pages created duplictaon of titles due to pagenation so I deleted the h1 What would you do with these pages. Should I optimize them with a text and h1. maybe it is possible to add some title and text content for the top of the first page only (the one page that are linked to our top menu) http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/property-type/villa and not to page 2, 3, 4….. http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/property-type/villa/page/2/ b) Also maybe I should rename the property types WOuld it make sence to change name of the property types from etc villa to villas for sale or even better villas for sale hua hin Then the above urls will look like this instead: http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/property-type/villas-for-sale/ Or Maybe renaming a property type would result in many 404 errors and not be worth the effort? 3) LINKING + REPOSTING OUR “PROPERTY” PAGES AND DO A 301 REDIRECT? a) Would It be good idea to link back from all properties description to one of our 5 optimized landingpages (for the keyword home/house/condo/villa) for sale in Hua Hin? http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/property-hua-hin/ http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/house-for-sale-hua-hin/ b) Also so far we haven’t been really good about optimizing each property (no keywords, optimized titles or descriptions) etc. http://www.dreamestatehuahin.com/property/baan-suksamran/ I wonder if it would be worth the effort to optimize content of each of the old properties )photos-text) on our page? Or maybe post the old properties again in a new optimized version and do a 301 redirect from the old post?

Why does Google add my domain as a suffix to page title in SERPS?
Hi, If I do a search in Google - for one our products on our site, our site comes up - but it would appear that google is adding our domain name as a suffix to our title in the results... Anyone else seen this? Can I do anything about it? I would prefer it not to appear. Thanks!

Duplicate on page content - Product descriptions - Should I Meta NOINDEX?
Hi, Our e-commerce store has a lot of product descriptions duplicated - Some of them are default manufacturer descriptions, some are descriptions because the colour of the product varies - so essentially the same product, just different colour. It is going to take a lot of man hours to get the unique content in place - would a Meta No INDEX on the dupe pages be ok for the moment and then I can lift that once we have unique content in place? I can't 301 or canonicalize these pages, as they are actually individual products in their own right, just dupe descriptions. Thanks, Ben

301 a strong but under-performing landing page to a new domain?
Hi guys, Our website have a very strong landing page (PA 80, more than 1,000 domains linking) but is currently not ranking at all as the targeted terms are dominated by exact match domains. We are thinking of redirecting this particular page to a new partial match domain targeting the same keywords. Is it a good move?
