Pagination, Javascript & SEO
-
Hi
I need some help identifying whether we need to rethink the way we paginated product pages,
On this page
http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches when clicking page 1,2, etc - we have javascript to sort the results, the URL displayed and the URL linked to are different. e.g.
The URL for these paginated pages is for example: page2 http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches#productBeginIndex:30&orderBy:5&pageView:list&
Then the arrows either side of pagination, link to the paginated landing page e.g. http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=3 - this is where the rel/prev details are - done for Google
However - when clicking on this arrow, the URL loaded is different again - http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches#productBeginIndex:60&orderBy:5&pageView:list& & doesn't take you http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=3
I did not set this up, but I am concerned that the URL http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=3 never actually loads, but it's linked to Google can crawl it.
Is this a problem?
I am looking to implement a view all option.
Thank you

Thank you this is helpful

If this page:
/en/key/workbenches#productBeginIndex:30&orderBy:5&pageView:list&
Had a rel="canonical" tag referencing this page:
/en/key/workbenches?page=2
Things would make a little more sense. But instead it references the main category page here:
en/key/workbenchesI think you're right to be concerned, and also agree that a View All Canonical page would be ideal for this site if they aren't willing or able to either pre-render the JavaScript so the client loads HTML, or at least land them on the right URL.

Hi Andy
Thank you for your feedback
To get to the ?page=1, ?page=2, The arrow to the side of the numbers links to these pages, but this URL isn't the one which actually loads. Like you said, you're never on the right URL/page
I'm just not sure of the best course of action from here & I'm unsure if this will affect SEO?
I know the webmaster has done this to sort the results by javascript, but I am not sure why they can't link & load the correct page e.g. http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/lighting-electrical?page=2
With this point you raised:
There does actually seem to be some problem with the navigation as well. If I go to http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=3 and the go forwards or back a page, I then am on page 2 or 4, but I see the following URL:
http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=3#productBeginIndex:90&orderBy:5&pageView:list&
Will Google only ever see http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=3? I am not sure how the crawlers would work in this instance?
Thank you

Hi Becky,
I think I am with you...
So is what you are saying, that there are different versions of the same page depending on which option you choose to move forwards with?
So where is ?page=1, ?page=2, etc linked from?
There does actually seem to be some problem with the navigation as well. If I go to http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=3 and the go forwards or back a page, I then am on page 2 or 4, but I see the following URL:
http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches?page=3#productBeginIndex:90&orderBy:5&pageView:list&
So I can be on page 1 or 5 and still see page 3 in the URL.
That aside, what I see is hashed (fragmented) content and Google doesn't index that. It understands that whatever is after the hash / fragment is used for something specific to a page and therefore for navigation purposes.
I would look to see what is going on with the navigation because it looks like the pagination is there, just not changing URL's correctly.
If I start at http://www.key.co.uk/en/key/workbenches and the click next, I get to the '2nd' page, but if I go back, it still shows me as being on the 2nd page in the navigation numbers.
I would say that there are some issues to iron out here first of all.

Question on AMP
I'd like to utilize AMP for faster loading for one of my clients. However, it is essential that this client have chat. My developer is having trouble incorporating chat with AMP, and he claims that it isn't possible to integrate the two. Can anyone advise me as to whether this is accurate? If it is true that AMP and chat aren't compatible, are there any solutions to this issue? I'd appreciate any leads on this. Thanks!

JavaScript navigation causing an SEO problem?
Hi - I'm looking at a site using JavaScript dropdown navigation - Google can crawl the whole site but my thinking is this - If I ensure the dropdown navigation is functioning fully when JS is switched off, I may facilitate the search engine bots? At the moment I can't get any dropdown effect if I turn JS off on the site but if I look at a cached page (text version) the dropdown links are visible and working. I am wondering whether any crawl benefit is there if you take this a step further and ensure the drop downs are actually visible and working when JS is switched off? I would welcome your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance, Luke - 07966 729775

Domain Forwarding - SEO Impacts?
I have a site that has been active for years - thinkbiglearnsmart.com. Awhile ago I had purchased about 50 domain names that were relevant to my company. I still have those urls and would like to use them to point to different pages on my site - just because they have good key words in the URLs. For example - one is dreamweavertrainingclassesonlinelive.com. Currently they are all redirecting to my homepage. A. is that hurting me? B. I would like to redirect to the more relevant page. ie the page dedicated to Dreamweaver training (http://thinkbiglearnsmart.com/dreamweaver-creative-cloud-training-course/ ) Will this hurt my Dreamweaver keyword for example because there is already a 301 redirect on that page from a very old Dreamweaver link which was something like thinkbiglearnsmart.com/dreamweaver C. On my hosting account where I can select where the URL forwards to - it has an option for "Location forwarding" and "Frame forwarding" - currently they are set to Frame forwarding - which one is best? Any help is much appreciated!!! Thank you!

Pagination & SEO
I have the WP-Pagination plugin and I am wondering how to handle duplicate content issues and what's best for SEO. My developer initially downloaded the plugin to speed up loading for the home page. Now my home page has 21 pages of paginated content. But the pagination continues with each of my categories as well. Should I be placing a canonical reference to my home page, or category main page? My site name is gracessweetlife (dot) com

SEO Landing Page Fail
We have a PPC landing page template that I've used to aggregate blog post collections thematically. http://www.ietravel.com/machu-picchu-travel http://www.ietravel.com/kenya-and-tanzania-safari The hope was that they would start ranking. After 5 months, it has yet to happen.Thought it was a good idea at the time because these pages have a nice prominent call-to-action area. It now occurs to me that the pages are probably under-performing because they are not incorporated into the main site navigation. Do you think that if I move these under their appropriate categories in the main site I'll see some lift? (Of course, I will add 301 redirects as well.) Thanks

SEO for Global Navigations
I did my first SEO audit from the book SEO Secrets by Danny Dover on my new website at http://melo4.melotec.com:4010/ In the book he says to disable Javascript and see if the global navigation still works. So when I did that the dropdown menus in my navigation don't show. I'm assuming this is a problem but when I check the cache text only version of the site, the dropdowns are in the text only version. Are their any experienced SEO's out their who can weigh in on this issue? Should I have my developer redo the navigation without any javascript? Thanks, Shawn
