Post migration issues - #11 + configuration issue
-
Hello Moz community.
I'm keen to find out your experiences on the following:
- Have you ever experienced a migration whereby a large % of keywords are stuck in position #11 - post migration? The keywords do not move up or down (whilst competitors jump from 13 to 9 and vice versa) over a three month period.
Please see the % difference in the attached e-mail. (sample 1,000 keyword terms)
Question: Has anyone ever experienced this type of phenomenon before? If so - what was the root cause of this and did this happen post migration? What solution did you use to rectify this?
- Have you ever seen a cross-indexing issue between two domains (each domain serves a different purpose) post migration, which impacts the performance of the main brand domain? I will explain a little further - say you have www.example.com (brand site) and www.example-help.com (customer service site) and the day the brand website is migrated (same domain - just different file structure), www.example-help.com points to the same server that www.example.com is on (with a different file structure) and starts to inherit the legacy file structure. For example, the following is implemented on migration day:
I will explain a little further - say you have www.example.com (brand site) and www.example-help.com (customer service site) and the day the brand website is migrated (same domain - just different file structure), www.example-help.com points to the same server that www.example.com is on (with a different file structure) and starts to inherit the legacy file structure. For example, the following is implemented on migration day:
For example, the following is implemented on migration day:
www.example.com/fr/widgets-purple => 301s to www.example.com/fr/widgets/purple
But www.example-help.com now points to the same server where the customer service content is now hosted. So although the following is rendered:
So although the following is rendered correctly:
www.example-help.com/how-can-we-help
We also have the following indexed in Google.fr - competing for the same keyword terms and the main brand website has dropped in rankings:
www.example-help.com/fr/widgets-purple [legacy content from main brand website]
Even when legacy content is 301 redirected from www.example-help.com to www.example.com, the authority isn't passed across and we now have www.example.com (as per Q1) a lot lower in Google than pre-migration.
Question: Have you ever experienced a cross-indexing issue like above whereby Google potentially isn't passing authority across from legacy to the new setup?
I'm very keen to hear your experiences on these two subjects and whether you have had similar problems on some of your domains.

Migrated Domain, 90% Drop in Organic Traffic, HELP!!!!
One week ago we migrated our old domain www.nyc-officespace-leader.com to https://www.metro-manhattan.com/. Our organic search traffic from Google has dropped about 90%. Is this normal? If so, how long should it take to recover? We filed a submitted a domain change request on Webmaster tools one week ago. We are noticing that many of the www.nyc-officespace-leader.com pages are still indexed which seems strange after a week. To complicate things, we filed a disavow file on April 9th for spammy links that pointed the NYC site. We filed the identical disavow of those links to the new Metro domain to ensure low quality links don't point to the new domain. Prior to making the domain change request, we migrated 30-40 non critical pages from NYC to Metro domains. Webmaster Tools indicated that the traffic was normal on the migrated pages. We then migrated remaining pages and filed the domain change request on April 4th. It is after April 4th that traffic and ranking declined. I would like to mention that there was no change in content; identical content was migrated from Metro to NYC This does not seem normal. Research prior to the migration indicated that if proper steps were taken it should proceed with limited disruption in traffic and ranking. Any ideas on how to remedy this situation? Thanks, Alan

HTTP HTTPS Migration Gone Wrong - Please Help!
We have a large (25,000 Products) ecommerce website, and we did an HTTP=>HTTPS migration on 3/14/17, and our rankings went in the tank, but they are slowly coming back. We initially lost 80% of our organic traffic. We are currently down about 50%. Here are some of the issues. In retrospect, we may have been too aggressive in the move. We didn't post our old sitemaps on the new site until about 5 days into the move. We created a new HTTPS property in search console. Our redirects were 302, not 301 We also had some other redirect issues We changed our URL taxonomy from http://www.oursite.com/category-name.html to https://www.oursite.com/category-name (removed the .html) We changed our filters plugin. Proper canonicals were used, but the filters can generate N! canonical pages. I added some parameters (and posted to Search Console) and noindex for pages with multiple filter choices to cut down on our crawl budget yesterday. Here are some observations: Google is crawling like crazy. Since the move, 120,000+ pages per day. These are clearly the filtered pages, but they do have canonicals. Our old sitemaps got error messages "Roboted Out". When we test URLs in Google's robots.txt tester, they test fine. Very Odd. At this point, in search console

a. HTTPS Property has 23,000 pages indexed
b. HTTP Property has 7800 pages indexed
c. The crawl of our old category sitemap (852 categories) is still pending, and it was posted and submitted on Friday 3/17 Our average daily organic traffic in search console before the move was +/-5,800 clicks. The most recent Search Console had HTTP: 645 Clicks HTTPS: 2000 clicks. Our rank tracker shows a massive drop over 2 days, bottoming out, and then some recovery over the next 3 days. HTTP site is showing 500,000 backlinks. HTTPS is showing 23,000 backilinks. I am planning on resubmitting the old sitemaps today in an attempt to remap our redirects to 301s. Is this typical? Any ideas?0 -

301 issues
Hi, I have this site: www.berenjifamilylaw.com. We did a 301 from the old site: www.bestfamilylawattorney.com to the one above. It's been several weeks now and Google has indexed the new site, but still pulls the old one on search terms like: Los Angeles divorce lawyer. I'm curious, does anyone have experience with this? How long does it take for Google to remove the old site and start serving the new one as a search result? Any ideas or tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

I posted a link to Rand's recent Moz Blog in another forum. One of the users posted a link to this article as a counter point. Thoughts? [title edited by staff for clarity]

Quick Survey - How much would you pay for a blog post?
Hi, I would be very grateful if you could answer a short question I have related to a project I am working on - I am trying to build up a bit of market research as to where the market lies with regard to the market rate for blog posting. The answers are pretty subjective as there are other factors in involved but for the purposes of this question, it would be helpful to have simple answers that assume: ASSUMPTIONS:

a/. The blogs/websites are of AVERAGE quality for the domain authority given, and are genuine niche website (with their own full domains) and not sites which are haunted by spammers (ie NOT anyone can post anything sites such as article directories and Squidoo like sites etc, )
b/. The articles are of AVERAGE quality you would associate with a domain of that authority IE the articles would be better as you go up the DA scale as you would expect. Each article contains a couple of links to your target website. **QUESTION:** In $ how much would you pay for an article both **written AND posted** on a website with the following domain authorities? 1/ DA 20 2/. DA 30 4/. DA 40 5/. DA 50 6/. DA 60 7/. DA 70 8/. DA 80 9/. DA 90+ I'll start off with my answers as follows: 1/ DA 20 - $15
2/. DA 30 - $30
4/. DA 40 - $50
5/. DA 50 - $80
6/. DA 60 - $120
7/. DA 70 - $200
8/. DA 80 - $350
9/. DA 90+ - $600 What would you pay?0 -
How was cdn.seomoz.org configured?
The SEOmoz CDN appears to have a "pull zone" that is set to the root of the domain, such that any static file can be addressed from either subdomain: http://www.seomoz.org/q/moz_nav_assets/images/logo.png http://cdn.seomoz.org/q/moz_nav_assets/images/logo.png The risk of this configuration is that web pages (not just images/CSS/JS) also get cached and served by the CDN. I won't put the URL here for fear of Google indexing it, but if you replace the 'www' in the URL below with 'cdn', you'll see a cached copy of the original: http://www.seomoz.org/ugc/the-greatest-attribution-ever-graphed The worst-case scenario is that the homepage gets indexed. But this doesn't happen here: http://cdn.seomoz.org/ That URL issues a 301 redirect back to the canonical www subdomain. As it should. Here's my question: how was that done? Because maxcdn.com can't do it. If you set a "pull zone" to your entire domain, they'll cache your homepage and everything else. googlebot has a field day with that; it will reindex your entire site off the CDN. Maybe the SEOmoz CDN provider (CloudFront) allows specific URLs to be blocked? Or do you detect the CloudFront IPs and serve them a 301 (which they'd proxy out to anyone requesting cdn.seomoz.org)? One solution is to create a pull zone that points to a folder, like example.com/images... but this doesn't help a complex site that has cacheable content in multiple places (do you Wordpress users really store ALL your static content under /wp-content/ ?). Or, as suggested above, dynamically detect requests from the CDN's proxy servers, and give them a 301 for any HTML-page request. This gets complex quickly, and is both prone to breakage and very difficult to regression-test. Properly retrofitting a complex site to use a CDN, without creating a half-dozen new CDN subdomains, does not appear to be easy.
