Do you think this is a good idea?
-
I have an idea that might help people evaluate casually the strength of backlinks. I'm thinking of building an upvoting list of backlink pages. People can vote on how they feel the strength of the backlink site has personally helped them. This would not be algorithmic or scientific, just a community of people rating their actual success with the strength of the backlinks for particular sites.
Thoughts?
Thanks!

Thank you for the responses everybody I appreciate your input.

I definitely agree with EGOL and Julie that both of those would happen.
HOWEVER, I do think there is a way to make this super useful to people and have it not be spammy. Charge for it. You'll have to figure out how to initially seed the community (it will be a community after all) with links and how to divide them up according to verticals/types of links, but if you don't let people be anonymous then you can keep it high quality (seeing Rand upvoted a link as opposed to Linksinator757 is super valuable) more easily.
Fun thought experiment for sure!

I think the law of unintended consequences would kick in ... soon you'd see Fiverr offerings to get 5 upvotes for your link page for $5.

This explanation approaches the topic from a tangent... just sayin' before you start readin'....
You really gotta be careful about following advice given on SEO forums and SEO Q&A sites - including advice given by me and what you read on Moz - or ANY other site for that matter. Lots of it is given by people who are just kibitzin' and lots is given by people who don't know a damn thing. So..... if you are a reasonably intelligent person, you pay attention to who is talkin' and use the advice from some people as a starting point and immediately disregard advice from others. Don't trust very much without confirming yourself because some people say what they think they know and don't know what they don't know.
For the reasons above, I would not trust a community sourced backlink assessment. I might trust someone like Marie Haynes for opinions on backlinks, but if I don't have that I am going to assess the link myself.
The sniff test works on many backlinks. Its really easy to spot a spammy site and its really easy to say that links from NASA, LOC.gov or the Pope are gonna be good ones. It's the links in between that are hard to assess. And, on those, I wouldn't trust three upvotes from people I don't know.

Making the most of a good back link
Hi Guys. We recently acquired a really good backlink from a charity site that has high DA. 71/100 on Open site explorer. I understand traffic is also a key component in a backlinks value, not just the DA. Is it worth spending time and energy (we don't have much as it's the lead up to Christmas) encouraging people onto the blog post to hopefully get some extra traffic through that link? And more generally, how much does traffic effect the value of link? Any insights would be greatly appreciated 🙂 Isaac.

Other than social media, where are good places to post content from ones website?
I am trying to build links with my content. I always post to social media (Twitter, Facebook, Google + and sometimes Stumble Upon) What are other good choices that may have more staying power?

Is there any good tools for toxic link checking.
I have done a manual link audit and made a good, bad and not sure list. Is there any tools I can run over the list to see if I missed anything and help me decide what to do with the not sure list?

Are PR releases good for Link Building?
I'm having a bit of a conundrum with Press Releases: I recently sent a press release on PRWeb (which I personally think is just "average" compared to others as it focuses mainly on the CBS network and is not focused at all unless you pay for an expensive release) and got over 100 incoming links from high PR news sites (according to Webmaster Tools) but these links had PRWeb in subtitle, so for all I know these were syndicated releases and not "Pick up By" as PRWeb reports. Will this affect Page Rank value or rankings for any keywords? Are these links treated only as temporary links or permanent back links? (I know sometimes they appear in Google News or Yahoo News, but disappear the next day) Was it valuable to the company? Our business is in health sector exclusively on East Coast U.S. and the release was seen all over the world and not one of the links coming back was from a health-related section. They were high rank online sites, but is there value in such links? added 11/30: I was reviewing competitors' link backs I found they did a lot of press releases and gained a high-level link back from each one. These were the best/highest-authority links they had. The syndicated releases were not even listed anywhere. And then I reviewed their SERPs... and guess what, their ranks increased with each one. (So I don't think "duplication" is an issue. If anything only the syndicated copies were penalized, but not the original one)

301 redirect blog network to main site, good or bad?
Hi, Here is a newbie question. When we launched our web shop 18 months ago I started eight blogs on a different host with keyword rich domain names to get some links to the shop. Today I don't update them, but they have a lot of links to our shop and the blogs have something like DA 20 and PA 30-40. There are lots of links between the blogs as well. Can I do 301 redirects of the blogs/posts to the web shop to rank higher in the SERP for the keywords? If I do, what happens to the links from the blogs to the shop? Will the shop loose a lot of links, but gain in PA, DA, mR etc? Overall, would the shop/main site benefit from this? Or should I just leave the blogs and not mess with them? They don't have much traffic. I appreciate any input, thanks!

Breadcrumbs - Good Internal Link Structure
Hello SEO Experts, I've been puting some thught into my internal link structure, and looking at breadcrumbs, as it has recently occured to me that most of the pages on my site link to Home | Contact Us | and paes and anchor text like that. Don't get me wrong my home page is really important, but anchor text of home I'm assuming is doing me no good at all? Anyway, here is my site home page And three other pages that are included within the site >> Pg1 | Pg2 | Pg3 So the four pages are targeting differnt keywords What I was planing on foing for Pg2 was having a breadcrumb trail that read like so site home page > Pg1 > Pg2 And then have the detail pages link from that with breadcrumbs like site home page > Pg1 > Pg2 > detail page with the home page link anchor text being 'jobs in (site area)' which would be followed by 'jobs in city' and then followed by 'sector jobs in city' So the breadcrumb trail would read - 'jobs in (site area)' > 'jobs in city' > 'sector jobs in city' So my question is, is this the best way of doing this, or would this be spammy? Ultimately it would mean 500+ internal links pointing at my homepage with the desired keywords in the anchor text?? Thanks for your thoughts 🙂
