Does non-critical AMP errors prevent you from being featured on Top Stories Carousel?
-
Consider site A which is a news publishing site that has valid AMP pages with non-critical AMP pages (as notified within Search Console). Also, Site A publishes news articles from site B (its partner site) and posts it on site A which have AMP pages too but most of them are not valid AMP pages with critical AMP errors.
For brand terms like Economic Times, it does show a top stories carousel for all articles published by Economic Times, however it doesn't look the same for site A (inspite of it having valid AMP pages).

Now that there are valid AMP pages from site A and invalid AMP pages from site B on site A, there have been instances wherein a news article from site A features on the top stories carousel on Desktop for a certain query whereas it doesn't feature on the mobile SERPs in spite of the page being a valid AMP page. For example, as mentioned in the screenshot below: Business Today ranks on the Top Stories carousel for a term like “jio news” on Desktop, but on Mobile although the page is a valid AMP page, it doesn’t show as an AMP page within the Top Stories Carousel.

There have been some cases where although the page is featured on the top carousel on desktop, the same article doesn't show up on the mobile version for the same query on the Top Stories Carousel.
What could be the reason behind this? Also, would it be necessary to solve both critical and non-critical errors on site A (including those published from site B on site A)?

Thanks for this!
2 things:
-
I'd suggest that if Site A republishes duplicate (syndicated) content from Site B and references Site B as the original source, you might want to consider simply blocking that content from search engines (on Site A). This will ensure that Google doesn't penalize for dupe content and also will prevent them from seeing the critical errors on the Site B AMP pages.
-
Overall I've tested your example page and couldn't find anything seriously wrong, but one thing I did notice was that in your structured data markup (NewsArticle) you have an error:
On the page: http://m.businesstoday.in/lite/story/reliance-jio-is-preparing-new-tariffs-and-exciting-offers-for-you/1/249662.html
You list "mainEntityOfPage" as "http://m.businesstoday.in/"
However, the Google guidelines state that "mainEntityOfPage" should be the canonical URL of the article page: https://developers.google.com/search/docs/data-types/articles#type_definitions (in this case: http://www.businesstoday.in/sectors/telecom/reliance-jio-is-preparing-new-tariffs-and-exciting-offers-for-you/story/249662.html)
Although the markup does pass the structured data testing tool validation, it is possible that this is breaking the structured data and using NewsArticle markup is something that Google states you must have implemented to feature in the News Carousel.
If fixing this doesn't help, I'd suggest cleaning up the non-critical errors next to see if that fixes the issue.

1. Yes, Site A republishes content from Site B on a daily basis as Site A has an exclusive partnership with Site B for republication (with site B being the parent publisher). To address content duplication errors we use the original-source tag to point towards the articles present on site B.
2. Yes, it performed well a couple of months ago until the non-critical errors started building up recently. One of them being "Use of deprecated tags or attributes". Also, as mentioned previously, AMP pages site A has non-critical errors and AMP pages from site B have critical as well as non-critical errors.
3. Yes.
4. Yes. Site A has about 15,000+ Indexed AMP pages, 4000+ Critical AMP Errors and 22,000+ non-critical AMP errors.

Hey! I have a few questions first of all, just to clarify the situation.
-
has Site A always published the articles from Site B? How do you currently handle the duplicate content aspect?
-
Has Site A's valid AMP content previously performed as expected, and this is a new issue? Or have you always had this issue?
-
Are you verified in Google News?
-
Are you seeing errors in Google Search Console for any of these AMP pages?

Woocommerce SEO & Duplicate content?
Hi Moz fellows, I'm new to Woocommerce and couldn't find help on Google about certain SEO-related things. All my past projects were simple 5 pages websites + a blog, so I would just no-index categories, tags and archives to eliminate duplicate content errors. But with Woocommerce Product categories and tags, I've noticed that many e-Commerce websites with a high domain authority actually rank for certain keywords just by having their category/tags indexed. For example keyword 'hippie clothes' = etsy.com/category/hippie-clothes (fictional example) The problem is that if I have 100 products and 10 categories & tags on my site it creates THOUSANDS of duplicate content errors, but If I 'non index' categories and tags they will never rank well once my domain authority rises... Anyone has experience/comments about this? I use SEO by Yoast plugin. Your help is greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance. -Marc

VisitSweden indexing error
Hi all Just got a new site up about weekend travel for VisitSweden, the official tourism office of Sweden. Everything went just fine except som issues with indexing. The site can be found here at weekend.visitsweden.com/no/ For some weird reason the "frontpage" of the site does not get indexed. What I have done myself to find the issue: Added sitemaps.xml Configured and added site to webmaster tools Checked 301s so they are not faulty By doing a simple site:weekend.visitsweden.com/no/ you can see that the frontpage is simple not in the index. Also by doing a cache:weekend.visitsweden.com/no/ I see that Google tries to index the page without the trailing /no/ for some reason. http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:http://weekend.visitsweden.com/no/ Any smart ideas to get this fixed or where to start looking? All help greatly appreciated Kind regards Fredrik

Moving popular blog from root to subdomain. Considerations & impact?
I'd like to move the popular company blog from /ecommerce-blog to blog.bigcommerce.com.WordPress application is currently living inside the application that runs the .com and is adding a large amount of files to the parent app, which results in longer deployment times than we'd like. We would use HTTP redirection to handle future requests (e.g. HTTP status code 301). How can this be handled from a WP point of view? What is the impact of SEO, rankings, links, authority? Thanks.

What can I do to put these pages back in the top results?
Hello here, here is an interesting question for you. The following 2 webpages from our website have been ranking well on Google (usually on the 1st or 2nd page) for the past 12 years. They are among our oldest, highly relevant product pages on our site: http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/Moonlight.html http://www.virtualsheetmusic.com/score/Eliza.html And we could always find them with the keyword "moonlight sonata sheet music" or "fur elise sheet music". Now, since the last November these pages don't show up anymore despite they are still present in the index. It is pretty hard to understand why those pages don't show up in the search results for those keywords as they used to, above all if you consider that those are among our best, most popular and unique product pages! But instead to struggle to understand why we lost presence (Panda? Some unknown sort of penalization?), has anyone any suggestions to help us to have those pages back in the top results? What do you suggest to do in such kind of cases? Any ideas and thoughts are very welcome! Thank you in advance.

How to beat Wikipedia article from the top spot on SERPS?
Hi Guys, One of our clients has a good web site with lots of content that is ranked already on #2 for the top keyword (singular and plural) on Google UK. The keyword itself is a competitive one. The top spot is occupied by a wikipedia article that doesn't have much content in general. Can anyone come up with an advice what strategy we have to apply to outplace that article? Thanks!

SEO for Korea - Naver & Daum
Google and Yahoo have very little market penetration in the Korean markets. Instead, the popular search engines are Naver and Daum. Naver seems to like keeping traffic within its own network of sites. Does anyone have tips for what things might work to increase search visibility in Korea?
