Is my domain holding me back in the SERPS?
-
Even after a good year or so, my site intensivedrivingschoolmiltonkeynes.co.uk does not rank in the top 10 (google.co.uk) for "Intensive Driving School Milton Keynes", and is nowhere for "Driving School Milton Keynes". Do you think the domain name is being penalised, or do you think there are other factors that contribute to the poor performance.
-
Your domain could potentially impact your performance in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) for several reasons. Here are some factors to consider:
-
Domain Age and History: Older domains generally have an advantage because they've had more time to build authority and backlinks. However, if the domain has a history of spammy activity or penalties, this could negatively impact its rankings.
-
Domain Name: Keywords in the domain name used to be a significant ranking factor, but their importance has diminished. However, a relevant, memorable domain name can still aid in user trust and click-through rates.
-
Backlink Profile: A strong, high-quality backlink profile is crucial for SEO. If your domain lacks authoritative backlinks or has many low-quality or spammy links, this could be holding you back.
-
Technical SEO Issues: Factors such as site speed, mobile-friendliness, proper indexing, and the absence of technical errors (like broken links) are critical. Tools like Google Search Console and third-party SEO audit tools can help identify and fix these issues.
-
Content Quality and Relevance: High-quality, relevant, and regularly updated content is essential. If your content is thin, outdated, or not valuable to your audience, this can hinder your rankings.
-
Competitiveness of Keywords: If you're targeting highly competitive keywords with a new or low-authority domain, it might be challenging to rank well. Consider targeting long-tail keywords with less competition.
-
User Experience (UX): A positive user experience, including a clean site structure, easy navigation, and low bounce rates, can positively influence rankings.
-
Brand Authority and Social Signals: Strong brand presence and social signals can indirectly influence rankings by driving traffic and engagement.
To assess whether your domain is holding you back, consider conducting a comprehensive SEO audit. Here are some steps you can take:
-
Check Domain Authority: Use tools like Moz's Domain Authority or Ahrefs' Domain Rating to evaluate your domain's authority compared to competitors.
-
Analyze Backlinks: Use backlink analysis tools to evaluate the quality and quantity of your backlinks.
-
Audit Technical SEO: Use tools like Screaming Frog, SEMrush, or Ahrefs to identify and fix technical SEO issues.
-
Evaluate Content: Ensure your content is high-quality, relevant, and optimized for your target keywords.
-
Monitor User Metrics: Check metrics like bounce rate, time on site, and pages per session using Google Analytics.
-
Review Competitors: Analyze the strategies of high-ranking competitors to identify areas where you can improve.
If you provide your domain name, I can offer a more specific analysis.

Determining if your domain is holding you back in the SERPs requires a comprehensive analysis of various factors including website content, technical SEO issues, backlink profile, user experience, and competition. Conducting an SEO audit can help identify any issues impacting your search rankings and devise strategies to improve your website's visibility and performance in search engine results.

When you're buying a domain name, contact a good seo agency to see if they can see that the domain has had any penalties applied to it or not?
such as algorithmic or manual Google penalties applied in the past.
We did this when we purchased our garden room company, we wanted to see if the domain name, possibly had any Google penalties applied to it in the past

Thanks guys. Yes open site explorer does not register any backlinks. According to google webmasters tools we have 49 links in from 7 domains. I'll work through the points you raised.
I'm disappointed about the backlinks as we have, in the past, paid for blogger outreach with programmes like fatjoe and the hoth. I take it, you would not recommend these?

Agree with Donald above, I do not believe your website is being penalized in anyway for your URL. Some things to consider to help:
1. Setting up, and/or optimizing as much as possible, your social media profiles (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pinterest)
2. Create & Verify Your Google My Business Profile if you haven't already.
3. Use Moz Local to see what profiles your business has or doesn't have, then use Moz Local to help or do them manually.
4. Add Schema to Your Website to help Google properly index it.
5. Look at some of the backlinks the people ranking in the top 3 for the 2 searches you mentioned above using Moz's Open Site Explorer, Ahrefs, or SEMRush, and then see what links you can gain to your website as well from what they have. -
Hi Gemma,
Will need more information. Time is not the only factor the ranks a website. I used open site explorer and see that there are no backlinks.
Backlinks should be a focus area if you want to rank your site.

titles length, URL length and meta descriptions on a subdomain effecting SEO on main domain?
Hi all, I am currently evaluating areas for optimization on my main domain. When doing this, Moz has identified multiple titles and urls that should be shortened and missing meta descriptions on my subdomain (a help center of sorts). As far as I am aware, we have not set up any "no-index" rules for this subdomain. Are these items affecting SEO on my main domain? Thanks,

Meta title not showing up correctly on SERP
We have an issue with some clients on a Wordpress CMS where title tags implemented on a Yoast SEO plugin for the Homepage are not coming up as we'd implemented them. However, the source code shows we'd implemented them correctly according to what we'd wanted.**For example, this is the title tag we implemented in the CMS:Towing Services Alberta | Jack's TowingSource code shows:Towing Services Alberta | Jack's TowingHowever, SERP results shows:**Jack's Towing | Towing Services Alberta This is not an issue with the rest of the other pages and there isn't a global template for our client's sites. It's perplexing that it's only happening on the Homepage and this is across for 3 of our clients' sites.Even more perplexing, recently we've noticed that SERP is only showing the client's business name as the title tag and this is across for 2 out of the 3 clients we'd mentioned above. Nothing has changed in the back-end.Would appreciate some insight on this issue!

Google is showing erroneous results on SERPs page
Hello, All, In April, two months ago, we caught a hack on a client's website. It created about 40 pages in what looked to be a black hat link tactic. We removed the pages, resubmitted the sitemap.xml (it reprocessed) and ran it through screaming frog to confirm all the pages were gone, but the forty pages still show up in the search results for a site search. We have both the www. and non www. version of sites claimed and set a preference. Nothing is awry with the robots.text. We're not really sure what to do to resolve it. We asked Google to recrawl (fetch) the site. I'm not sure what's going on with it. The website's name is fortisitsolutions.com The site search bringing up the pages from the hack is below. site:www.fortisitsolutions.com Any ideas?

Does using keywords in the top level domain make any difference to SEO rankingsq
i am setting up a new company and I need to register a domain name, is there any advantage to using the full name of the company in the domain name? I know it used to be important but does it still make a difference? If possible I would like to just use say the first letter of each of the 3 words instead what will amount to 23 letters but of it makes a difference then 23 letters it will have to be. Thanks

Title Tags not Displaying in SERPs Correctly
We have two websites that are very similar. One is .co.nz and the other is a .com.au. I've noticed some of our page titles are displaying differently in SERPs even though the title tags are formatted the same:e.g. The title: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape Australia" shows as: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape Australia - MightyApe.com.au"It's showing with extra text "- MightyApe.com.au". Whereas the NZ result for the title "PC Games | at Mighty Ape NZ" is fine i.e. displays as: "PC Games | at Mighty Ape NZ"Does anyone who why this might be happening?P.S. It's odd that in the Australian results the site links don't show up even though the sites are structured the same.

How to increase SERP for long tail keywords?
Let me describe my situation. I currently run an e-commerce site that aggregates items across various e-commerce website. I am focusing my SEO on the long tail keywords such that when user searches for 'hermes birkin bag croco black' and other specific item search, then the page that I have on my site pops up. What are some tips on increasing this kind of stuff in a general sense such that I don't have to go through all of my 10,000 items that I have in my site and optimize each and every page for keywords. Right now what I am thinking is to increase the domain authority of the overall site. Any other tips?

Too many page links warning... but each link has canonical back to main page? Is my page OK?
The Moz crawl warns me many of my pages have too many links, like this page http://www.webjobz.com/jobs/industry/Accounting ...... has 269 links but many of the links are like this /jobs/jobtitles/Accounting?k=&w=3&hiddenLocationID=463170&depth=2 and are used to refine search criteria.... when you click on those links they all have a canonical link back to http://www.webjobz.com/jobs/industry/Accounting Is my page being punished for this? Do I have to put "no follow" tags on every link I do not want the bots to follow and if I do so is Roger (moz bot) not going to count this as a link?
