Where does Google get its meta descriptions from?
-
We have a new client and they don't have meta descriptions yet. However, Google has assigned descriptions for them now appearing on the SERPs. The problem is that Google added a phone number that's totally not the client's and goes to a different unrelated business. Our plan is to update the meta to reflect the correct information, however, we're just perplexed as to how Google came up with the incorrect phone number. Where does it get its information from? The page currently has all the correct phone number, hours, and content.
I've read that Google sometimes also doesn't recognise our meta descriptions if it thinks they could serve up a better one. My next question is, what if Google insists on showing the incorrect phone number. Is there a way we can fix this? Thanks!

Thank you! Yes, we have a feeling the phone number came from a hidden code somewhere. We asked our client if their website was built by the same developer that built the site of the business where the phone number goes to. If this is the case, then that solves the mystery.

Hey!
Thanks for posting, that's a really good question,
Google will typically create a meta description based on the content of that page, in this instance if the meta description is completely missing Google will use an algorithm to pull through keywords that it deems relevant to the user's search query, directly from the copy of the page.
One negative of this is, you will have a lack of control over what is displayed in the SERPs about your brand.
If the meta description is pulling through an incorrect phone number, this may be caused by a hidden piece of code on the page, that Google deems relevant.
Do you have an the page URL as an example?
That being said, when you come to update the meta description, as long as it contains relevant and up to date information based on the content of the page and it's within Google guidelines, (150 - 160 Characters) then Google should not find the need to create a meta description, and the bogus number should no longer be displayed.
Hope this helps!
Thanks,

Google Answer Box
I optimized several pages using Rand's post on Google Answer Box: https://mza.bundledseo.com/blog/how-to-appear-in-googles-answer-boxes-whiteboard-friday How long after the page is indexed should it appear? Lastly, how long should I wait before determining it will not get an answer box and reconfigure the page? No bad answers 🙂 TY KJr

Google is not taking the title I set
Hi Everyone, I have the following website I am trying to SEO www.forcor.com.ar. As usual, the client decided to SEO the website after it was made by a developer that is not specialized in SEO. I am having the following issue. Google is not picking up the title I defined for the homepage. I have changed it multiple times and Google continues to take the title that was defined when the website was launched which was about 6 months ago. I also tried to verify if the title is being defined by some other website and so far I do not find any evidence that supports this. This is the title seen in the SERP (GOOGLE) as of 6 months ago - Forcor S.A: Repuestos Ford - Concesionario Oficial de Ford This is the one that is programmed via Yoast - <title>Repuestos Ford - Concesionario Oficial de Ford - Forcor S.A</title> The funny thing is that Google is picking up the correct Meta Description. Any suggestions on how to get Google to pick up the programmed title??? Another interesting fact is that Yahoo is picking up the correct title as you can see here

Duplicate meta and title in Google Webmaster Tools not updated?
Our canonical tags were removed by mistake for some time and our duplicate meta and title warnings in Google webmaster tools html improvements went up. We fixed the issue a week ago. I made sure the sitemap is picking up the canonical URL. Still the number went up after we fixed it (from around 5000 to around 7000 now) but when I click on details, it shows around 2000 in detail page. How long does it take for Google to update this? RB

Paginated URLs are getting Indexed
Hi, For ex: - My site is www.abc.com and Its paginated URLs for www.abc.com/jobs-in-delhi are in the format of : www.abc.com/jobs-in-delhi-1, www.abc.com/jobs-in-delhi-2 and vice versa also i have used pagination tags rel=next and rel=prev. My concern is all the paginated URLs are getting indexed so is their any disadvantage if these URLs are getting indexed as somewhere i have read that link juice may get distributed in case of pagination. isn't it good to use Noindex, Follow so that we can make the Google to understand that paginated page are not so much important and that should not be ranked.

Problem with meta title
My web is http://www.canexel.es, is supported by wordpress and I'm having some problems with the meta title. Google SERPS shows “Canexel: Casas de madera canadienses“ when I config the snipped to show “Casas de Madera canadienses – Canexel” I use SEO yoast plugin. I dont know why it is showing the name of the company followed by a colon at the beginning. The home page is the only one that is having that problem. Thx!

Product Descriptions & SEO
I got another small question for my price comparison website that I run 🙂 An example product from my site, to which this question relates http://goo.gl/XDTUNs I have about 600 products which I track, and the product description I have for each is as follows; Paragraph 1 - Standard copy which is contained on all products, only the product name / keyword is changed "Easily compare prices below on a XXX" Paragraph 2 = Blatant, 100% copy of the product description from Amazon Paragraph 3 - Standard copy which is contained on all products, only the product name / keyword is changed "Always read your chosen stores product description before buying your XXX" Firstly, I am now on a mission to create unique descriptions instead of the Amazon ones I foolishly copied. My question is, are the standard paragraph 1 and 3 which are in all my product ok? Or should this be avoided? Should my unique description be paragraph 1, or can it remain in the middle? The reason for the three separate paragraphs was so I could mention to keyword 3 times, which is what is suggested on the Moz page grader. Thanks so much!

Wrong sitelinks & landing pages in Google
I've recently launched a well-optimized website with good-content category landing pages and then I've added a blog to the website (as supporting content to the landing pages, the only links pointing to the blog are from the category landing pages) What happened is that Google is now using the Blog pages as the site - sitelinks and also as the landing pages for most keywords I only have inbound links to the reg. landing pages and none to the blog, how do I get Google to change that? I know I can demote sitelink URL's in webmaster tools, but would that help me with getting the right sitelinks, it sure wont help much with the landing pages Thanks
