Search console site verification
-
I've been going on the assumption that when verifying a website in search console, it's always good to register and verify all variants of the site URL:
- http
- https
- www
- non-www
However, if you create redirects to the preferred URL, is it really necessary to register/virfy of the other three? If so, why?

Your dev is right on the specific question of whether the additional GMB profiles are necessary for Google to understand which is the primary version. This is not essential as long as the proper redirects are in place. It's a "belt and suspenders" approach. If there's no way for the search engine crawlers to ever reach anythig but the primary version, then there's no way for them to get it wrong. You're using the GMB info to reinforce what the redirects are already doing. (That said - it's trivial to reinforce the redirect process with the declaration in GMB, so best practice is to do that as well. You need the GMB profile to properly manage the other aspects of marketing the site anyway, so...)
Put another way - declaring the primary version of the site using the alternate GMB profiles is Google's way of allowing those who might not have proper dev access to sites to at least partly accomplish the same thing from within GMB which they can manage.
The real value to verifying the other versions in GMB is so that you can monitor to make certain that those non-canonical versions of the site are in fact definitely not getting indexed or ranked. This is essential after an HTTPS migration, for example, as you should see the HTTP profile showing a steady drop in indexing while the HTTPS profile shows the steady increase.
A periodic check of the non-canonical GMB profiles will alert you immediately to any newly discovered issues Google's crawlers may be encountering (like a sitewide redirect got accidentally removed or changed, for example.)
Make sense?

If you don't have access to the old Google accout, verify the property from the current new account. Verify all versions and then select the preferred one. This is what Google asks people to do. It is very fast and easy. This is always the preferred method.

The preferred version has been verified by adding an HTML tag in the Shopify theme (this is how I usually verify too). But I don't have access to the same search console account...
- can I generate a new HTML tag to verify the other three variants (ie. is it OK to use two different HTML tags)?
- or should I create a new HTML tag to verify ALL 4 variants (ie. is there any negative side to replacing the orginal HTML tag)?
-
Nope, you should not believe what your dev is saying (in this particular case).
As William said, Google suggest us to verify all your versions and set the preferred to be considerd. -
Thanks William,
That's always been my approach too, but the dev is adamant that if they redirect all variants to the preferred version there is no need to verify them all.
My question is: should I believe what this dev is saying?

Hello,
Yes, Google suggests that you register all variants of your site. Then make sure to select the preferred one in the search console. That way Google will understand your intent and desire.

Error 404 Search Console
Hi all, We have a number of 404 https status listed in Search Console even treated, not decrease. What happened: We launched a website with the urls www.meusite.com/url-abc. We launched these urls sitemap. Google has indexed. ... For some reason, the urls were changed four days later by some developer in my equipe. So I asked the redirection of URLs "old" already indexed to the new (of: / url-abc to / url-xyz) all correspondingly. I submit the sitemap with new urls. We fixed the internal links. And than marked as fixed in the Search Console. But it does not work! Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks for any advice!

Partial Match or RegEx in Search Console's URL Parameters Tool?
So I currently have approximately 1000 of these URLs indexed, when I only want roughly 100 of them. Let's say the URL is www.example.com/page.php?par1=ABC123=&par2=DEF456=&par3=GHI789= All the indexed URLs follow that same kinda format, but I only want to index the URLs that have a par1 of ABC (but that could be ABC123 or ABC456 or whatever). Using URL Parameters tool in Search Console, I can ask Googlebot to only crawl URLs with a specific value. But is there any way to get a partial match, using regex maybe? Am I wasting my time with Search Console, and should I just disallow any page.php without par1=ABC in robots.txt?

New site causes massive drop off in ranking, old site restored how long to recover?
Hello, We launched and updated version of our site, mainly design changes and some functionality. 3 days after the launch we vanished from the rankings, previous page one results were now out of the top 100. We have identified some of the issues with the new site and chose to restore the old well ranking site. My question is how long might it take for the ranking to come back, if at all? The drop happened on the third day and the site was restored on the third day. We are now on day 6. Using GWT with have used fetch as Google and resubmitted the site map. Any help would be gladly received. Thanks James

Should I just redirect all my sites to my main site.
Hi, Over the last few years I have built many sites and own a lot of domain names. Some have high page rank some have high domain authority and some have many back links. I'm finding it very difficult to keep up with all the links and being able to provide quality content for everything. Should I just redirect everything to my one site that make the most money as all sites are for the same industry, but in different categories of that industry. So I could 301 redirect all the sites to the relevant page on my money site. Would it be a problem is 1000's if not 10,000's of links all of a sudden pointed in to one site?

Why does this site rank above us?
We own www.discountbannerprinting.co.uk and over the last 8 months have built some decent guest post, charity and customer links but still we seem to be beaten on good words such as banners, banner, vinyl banner, pvc banner etc by this website www-signfirm.com we just cannot figure out how this is happening and would be very grateful if someone with great wisdom could give us an in-site into why this is happening and we would be very grateful..

Seo for Q&A site
Hi, I am working on a newly launched Q&A site. We have very few questions and users right now and very very low seo traffic. In order to increase the number of users and seo traffic we intend to create a number of pages containing potential questions. Each page would have the following structure: Question. Ex: "What are the top wholesale suppliers of coffee in China?" Some content. Ex: Are you looking for wholesale suppliers of coffee in China? Post your question here? Question form Some additional content So there would be a page for wholesale suppliers of coffee for every country. We would publish the pages gradually and the content would be unique but yet similar (ex: only the Country changes). What do you think about this approach? Is it a good idea or can it be dangerous? We don't want to incur in any kind of penalization, we just want to give the possibility to people who are looking for specific information to find us and be able to post the request on our website.
