Duplicate product description on the same page
-
Hello,
I've got a really simple a basic question : is it an issue to put an excerpt of a text at the begining of a page, with a "jump to full text" link at the end of the excerpt ? So the first part of the text will be duplicated.
A solution would be to hide a part of the text and reveal it with a "read more" button, but we don't want to do that, we want users to be able to read the full text just by scrolling + we want to put an excerpt "above-the-fold" content
It's a product page.
A second question : we've got duplicate content between our brand category pages, and the related product page, because the presentation text of the brand is shown on the product page + on the brand category page (it's presentations of distilleries, so it's a valuable content for the customer, we want to show it directly on the product page). Do you think it's a big issue ? Or maybe we can think : "ok, there is plenty of other text on those pages, so it won't matter" ?

Thanks !

Yes, but my question was about seo, not UX. Regarding the UX, it's depend of the layout, of the way this excerpt is displayed, of its length etc. "would the duplicated content serve the UX? Of course not." so, no, it's not so simple. It can serve the UX, yes.

To your first question:
If the text on the product page is only duplicated on that page, then it's fine. That's not much different than having a text pull quote in an article. Also not much different from Amazon having a short description, and a jump link down the page to a longer description.
To your second question:
We generally don't worry too much about duplication on category/tag/aggregation pages, so long as it's only excerpts, eg 5-50 words. If the pages are really thin, and 100% of the text content from the distillery page shows up on the category page, then you need to write more text for the distillery pages to fix the problem.

Hi Leana,
Sorry William, I think it truly matters, not to the point that you will be penalized, of course.
But:
UX is the uttermost goal for Google and the other search engines, specially nowadays. In that sense, visitors who have to read the same text twice, might no trust your brand for buying your products or simply very displeased would closed the window. As days pass your bounce rate could rise. If so, the algorithms will decide to show other websites with similar content before yours, answering the same query, due to the bounce rate tells to the algorithms that you do not offer a good UX.
In sum, would the duplicated content serve the UX? Of course not. Therefore you might try other options like rewrite the introductory lines above.
On regard the duplicated content between the product pages and the brand category pages, it is the same as explained above. Although if there is no other way to improve those duplicated you have to use canonical tags pointing to the originals more valuable pages, ie the brand category pages. Good luck.

Hello,
Personally, if it is just a minor portion of the overall content on the pages I do not see a problem with it. From what I think you are saying, I consider it to be like placing "Keywords" on a page twice instead of only once. This could actually help you if the text contains the keywords you are targetting.
I would just keep an eye on it and see if your rankings are rising or falling for the keywords you are targetting.
Best Regards

Duplicate Blog Content
Hey Mozzers! I have a client who is a dentist, with multiple offices, and wants to use an identical blog post (including images, alt text, text, tags, everything pretty much) from one of his office's website on his other office's website to save time and mimic the success of the original content for his other office. Everything I've researched says this is a HUGE no-no, but I'd love to hear if anyone else has tried to do something like this and if they were successful in doing so (implementing rel=cannonical or 301?). Also, if he is the owner of both sites and they both receive low traffic will Google even notice? My biggest worry is that if I did post the content on his other site, identically, that it would dilute the visibility of the original post, which has and is continuing to surpass our organic search goals... The main goal though, is to drive traffic to BOTH sites via organic search using the same content. Would love to hear everyone's opinions if this is possible or unrealistic... Thanks! -D

Duplicate Forum Content
HI everyone, great to be here, absolutely loving everything, please go easy on me I'm quite a noob when it comes to seo, but hopefully my question isn't too basic. After running the initial checks on my websites, I found there are 7,646 duplicate pages? Some are easy fixes but the majority are not, being forum pages, the edit, quote and new post links are coming up as duplicates of the main post? Does anyone know how to fix this? Best Lee

Is Publishing Content from a Book to your Site Considered Duplicate Content?
It is a book we don't own, either. Would you need to somehow find the original and rel=canonical it? Or is this just all around bad to do? Thanks.

Why is an old meta description displaying in search results?
We launched a new version of our retail website in Dec. 2012. This included new content and new metadata. When our homepage displays in search results, it almost always displays with designated meta description - except when it's searched with the .com. In that case, an old version of our meta description (pre-Dec. 2012) is visible, though our current title displays. The old metadata isn't loaded anywhere in our content management system. What can we do to change this?

Correction Duplicate Page Title Problems for a Blog
EDITED: To just focus on the issue at hand. I am trying to figure out the SEO rules instead of just working on the content. Please bear with me. I am adept technically. I just do not know the rules of the SEO process or even some of the termology. So I’m trying to attack problems one at time. Today’s problem – **Duplicate Page Titles ** We evidently have thousands of Duplicate Page Titles. We are using Joomla 2.5 & Easyblog. Our sitemap is automated from XML Sitemap Easyblog takes the title of the sites and uses it for a name of the summary pages. We post 5 blog items per page and all the names are the same. http://www.OursiteName.com/?start=5 Page Title = Site Name http://www.OursiteName.com/?start=10 Page Title = Site Name A similar thing happens on the sorting by Author or Category etc etc. Basically non-duplicate pages are looking like duplicates. What is the best practice / approach? Using the Robot.txt or XML Sitemap to tell Google not to crawl these pages? Writing a script or edit the Easyblog code to edit the 2000 duplicate Page Titles? Other thoughts?

Content being copied from our product page hurting our site overall?
On our product pages, he have short descriptions and some bulleted lists. Resellers of our products, and many other sites who are not resellers are copying this content, often verbatim. While I'm not as concerned for the product pages themselves as we're hoping the category pages will rank, does this duplication of our content hurt our site overall? FWIW, our brand name is in our domain and often also shown on these sites that copy the content.
