Submitting site to dmoz.org
-
Over the last couple of years I've repeatedly submitted (about 4 times) our site to dmoz.org, hoping to get listed but have never been successful in getting the site recognized.
We have an eCommerce site that deals in automotive parts and accessories. What does it take to get your site accepted in dmoz and how do you go about it?
Thanks,
Steve

I haven't heard anything regarding DMOZ shutting down. Where did you hear that?
-
Have you picked the right category? If not a lot of bouncing around can happen internally.
-
I have had mixed results: about six of eight submissions accepted within the last year. But nothing in the last 90 days.

Dmoz.org is shutting down, atleast what I've heard. If shutting down means closing the site and delete all links or just close the submission-form, I don't know.
To answer your question: It's really hard to get accepted to Dmoz, this is because the huge amount of links that are submitted for moderation by an administrator. You're a lucky man if you get one accepted nowadays.
-
Try submitting to a different category. Most areas in dmoz is administrated by an individual. These are volunteers and maintaining a directory section is often not seen as a worth cause. Some people only log in once every few months, and others are intentionally ignoring other sites as they don't want to increase their competition.
Yes it sounds bad. It is bad. It has been complained about on every level. I am not aware of anything that can be done to demand a fair consideration of your site.

Backlinks from an Association Site
My company is joining an Industrial Association. Part of the membership is a link to our site from theirs. I've found that going to their site triggers a "threat alert" through our company malware detection system and shows a link that may be infected with malware. With all of that said I have (2) questions... Since this is a paid membership, will Google penalize us for having a link to our company from this association's website? Since a link on their site has potential malware issues, should we add our link to their site or could it be harmful to us? Any helpful advice is appreciated.

What are the steps to submitting a sitemap for a blog?
We are in the process of a website migration and need to submit a site map for our website and blog. What are the steps to follow for submitting a site map for the blog? Can we submit with just the /blog URL or do we need to include each category?

Tracing Redirects to a Site
I wonder if anyone has used any tools where you can trace the redirects pointing to a site? I know there are a number of tools out there that can be used to check where a URL redirects to, but I was wondering if anyone has used a tool where I could trace all redirects with the final URL? I am using this for competitor research so I don't have access to Analytics or Webmaster Tools.

Will Links to one Sub-Domain on a Site hurt a different Sub-Domain on the same site by affecting the Quality of the Root Domain?
Hi, I work for a SaaS company which uses two different subdomains on our site. A public for our main site (which we want to rank in SERPs for), and a secure subdomain, which is the portal for our customers to access our services (which we don't want to rank for) . Recently I realized that by using our product, our customers are creating large amounts of low quality links to our secure subdomain and I'm concerned that this might affect our public subdomain by bringing down the overall Authority of our root domain. Is this a legitimate concern? Has anyone ever worked through a similar situation? any help is appreciated!

Local business with multiple sites
I'm auditing a local business' sites (a spa) and I wanted to run my recommendations by everyone. There are 3 sites: www.sitename1.com -- main store location, used for Google Places listing #1 www.sitename2.com -- 2nd store location, used for Google Places listing #2 www.sitename3.com -- used for product sales for both locations Sitename1.com has the most ranking power. I'm going to recommend that they move sitename2.com and sitename3.com to sitename1.com as subfolders, 301 redirecting each page to the corresponding page on sitename1.com/subfolder. Google Places listing #2 would be changed from www.sitename2.com to www.sitename.com/location2. Any risks or problems with this strategy anyone can see?

Recently revamped site structure - now not even ranking for brand name, but lots of content - what happened? (Yup, the site has been crawled a few times since) Any ideas? Did I make a classic mistake? Any advise appreciated :)
I've completely disappeared off Google - what happened? Even my brand name keyword does not bring up my website - I feel lost, confused and baffled on what my next steps should be. ANY advice would be welcome, since there's no going back to the way the site was set up.

301 redirect on the root of the site
Due to some historic difficulties with our URL Rewriter, we are in the position of having the root of our site 301 redirected to another page. So the root of our site: http://www.propertylive.co.uk/ has a 301 redirect to: http://www.propertylive.co.uk/home.aspx We're aware that this isn't great and we're working to fix this completely, but what impact will this have on our SEO?
