What would you do about this Pillar Page conundrum?
-
I am re-organizing site structure for an e-commerce site. Here's the problem I have:
The product (shipping container) is available to BUY and HIRE in four sizes, for example a 20ft container is one of them. Now, should I have a 20ft container product page for buying -- and also a 20ft container for hiring?
I want the container sales and seperate container hire page to be pillar pages, if I don't have any cluster pages for the different container sizes below them it I'm worried it'll just be floating out there in the ocean while the sales page gets all the cluster love. At the same time I don't want to have something that looks like duplicate content with 20ft hire and 20ft sale page. Any ideas please?

There's gold in your answer Roman, thanks for taking the time!

As I understand you want 2 main pages, your product pages are related to shipping containers.
At this point, you have 2 options, build several pages for each product/services will all the variations or just build 2 main pages. Let's assume you have this 2 pages. Also, you mentioned that you have 4 sizes available
- size-1
- size-2
- size-3
- size-4
So the best way to deal with this problem is using Anchor Links
so instead of having several pages with many size variations, you will have
just 2 strong pagesHow to Create Anchor Links in WordPress
https://kinsta.com/blog/anchor-links/So your URL structure will look like this one
- www.yourwebsite.com/buy-container#size-1
- www.yourwebsite.com/buy-container#size-2
- www.yourwebsite.com/buy-container#size-3
- www.yourwebsite.com/buy-container#size-4
-------------------------------------------------------------------->
- www.yourwebsite.com/hire-container#size-2
- www.yourwebsite.com/hire-container#size-3
- www.yourwebsite.com/hire-container#size-4
Wikipedia articles are a good example of what I'm talking about
if you search for Shipping Containers on Wikipedia
you will found this article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipping_containerSo this page try show all the important content related to shipping containers
- type of shipping container
- Corrugated box
- Wooden box
- and so on
If you go the page
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shipping_container
if you check the table of content will look like this- Types
- Intermodal freight containers
- Corrugated box
- Wooden box
If you check the code you can inspect the code and take a look of
how Wikipedia use anchor links to build strong pages. So Basically on that page, you will found all the relevant information about this specific topic such as sizes, materials, international norms etc. These pages are called **10x content **here on Moz, **Cornerstone content **on Yoast or Money Pages on Affiliate marketing. The idea behind is building strong pages rather than dilute your content, trust, link-juice using several pages.
Hope this information helps you to answer your question

Q&A Page Titles
Hello All! I am currently updating page titles and metadata descriptions for a websites Q&A section and have run in to a problem while updating page titles. Since it is the Q&A section of the website, all of the page titles are around 100 characters and some are up to 200 characters long. Here is an example: Page Title: My child is working below grade level in math. Do I have to purchase the curriculum from the grade below as well? The problem is that this is obviously too long for a SERP to display however I know it is best practice to have matching titles on both the title tag and page title. My question is what hurts SEO value more: the title tag and title of the page not matching or having a very long title displayed on the SERP?

Duplicate page content
Hi Crawl errors is showing 2 pages of duplicate content for my clients WordPress site: /news/ & /category/featured/ Yoast is installed so how best to resolve this ? i see that both pages are canonicalised to themselves so presume just need to change the canonical tag on /category/featured/ to reference /news/ ?(since news is the page with higher authority and the main page for showing this info) or is there other way in Yoast or WP to deal with this & prevent from happening again ? Cheers Dan

Is it better to have an hreflang go to the home page in a different language if there's no corresponding page
If I have some pages in English, but not in Spanish on my website: Should my hreflang go to the home page on the Spanish site? Or should I not have an "es-MX" hreflang for that page? Ideally I would have all the pages translated, but this has not all been done yet.

Missing new pages in Search
Hi, We are on wordpress platform with category permalink structure site.com/category/categoryname. To pull in more SEO traffic, we created pages with structure site.com/categorynameand pulled in all the content from category pages to these new pages followed by applying no-follow on category pages within robots.txt. While it has been a week we applied these changes, we still see old category pages on google search with weird description ( A description for this result is not available because of this site's robots.txt... ) How could we make search results to replace old categories links with the new pages? thanks in advance

Why isn't our site being shown on the first page of Google for a query using the exact domain, when its pages are indeed indexed by Google
When I type our domain.com as a query into Google, I only see one of our pages on the homepage, and it's in 4th position. It seems though, that all pages of the site are indexed by google when I type in the query "site:domain.com". There was an issue at the site launch, where the robots.txt file was left active for around two weeks. Would this have been responsible for the fact that another domain ranks #1 when we type in our own domain? It has been around a couple of months now since the site was launched. Thanks in advance.

Can you 301 redirect to a page that has other pages 301 to it?
Two years ago updated url page to include better keywords and used a 301 redirect from the old page to the new. so www.example.com/keyword-1st-generation.html now points to ... www.example.com/keyword-2nd-generation.html That moved the pages up in ranking, but now have better kw for the url, so is it okay to redirect the /keyword-2nd-geration-html to www.example.com/keyword-3rd-generation.html And what is a good length of time before removing the 1st-generation url? It's been 3 years and there is no chance of using it again. Plus, no sign of it in analytics.

Getting pages indexed by Google
Hi SEOMoz, I relaunched a site back in February of this year (www.uniquip.com) with about 1 million URL's. Right now I'm seeing that Google is not going past 110k indexed URL's (based on sitemaps). Do you have any tips on what I can do to make the site more likeable by Google and get more indexed URL's? All the the part pages can be browsed to by going to: http://www.uniquip.com/product-line-card/suppliers/sw-a/p-1 I've tried to make the content as unique as possible by adding random testimonials and random "related part numbers" see here: http://www.uniquip.com/id/246172/electronic-components/infineon/microcontrollers-mcu/sabc161pilfca Do I need to wait more time and be more patient with Google? It just seems like I'm only getting a few thousand URL's per day at the most. Would it help me if I implemented a breadcrumb on all part pages? Thanks, -Carlos
