Can slow mobile page speed affect desktop search results?
-
I heard recently from an SEO friend that with Google's recent update, mobile page speed now affects desktop results.
Our site is relatively slow on mobile, and I wanted to check!
Thank you!

This is a really good answer. You can also look for messages from Google saying that "mobile first indexing" was enabled for your site / GSC property

Hi Laura,
Hope everything is fineTLDR; If your site is already in mobile first index, then a slow speed in mobile will affect your rankings.
What you need to know is whether your site is in the mobile-first index or not. You can check that by selecting several pages of your site in the correspondent search console property, through the coverage report looking into the last crawled URLs and clicking in the inspect URL. What to seek, specifically? What says in "Crawled as." Take a look at the attached image.
There you will find out if you are in the desktop first index (crawled mostly as google desktop) or mobile first index.
What does this mean? That your site will be either judged to rank with the desktop or the mobile version.
If your site is in the mobile-first index and has a poor speed performance in mobile then won't probably rank high.Hope it helps.
Best luck
Gaston

Will getting backlinks to landing page from low quality sites negatively affect SEO?
I've recently started an initiative at my company to get our customers to publish a blog post about our company and to include a link to a landing page which sits on a subdomain attached to our main domain. The reason for directing visitors to the post to a landing page is to help with conversion. I've recently been thinking that couldn't the backlinks to this landing page from our customers' blogs (generally small sites) have a negative impact on the overall SEO of my companies domain? Thanks in advance.

Can I canonical the same page?
I have a site where I have 500+ Page listing pages and I would like to rel=canonical them to the master page. Example: http://www.example.com//articles?p=18 OR http://www.example.com/articles?p=65 I plan on adding this to the section from of the page template so it goes to all pages - When I do this, I will also add the canonical to the page I am directing the canonical. Is this a bad thing? Or allowed?

Some competitors have a thumbnail in Google search results
I've noticed that a few of my top competitors have a small photo (thumbnail) next to their listing. I'm sure it's not a coincidence that they are ranked top for the search phrase too. Is this really a help and how can it be done? Many thanks, Iain.

How to handle mobile site with less pages than the main site?
We are developing a mobile version of our website that will utilize responsive design/dynamic serving. About 70% of the main website will be included in the mobile version. What (if anything) should be the redirect for pages not included in the mobile version of the site? Also - for one specific section users will be redirected from that page to the homepage, what is the redirect that should be used for this? Thanks!

Local search results appearing above Organic
Hello, I've just performed a search for the query 'outdoor clothing' using Google Incognito mode and I've added the screenshots below to show my findings. The first attempt at the search only showed local results then when I clicked search again adverts were shown. I found this very odd, normally I'd see the local results after the 3rd of 4th organic result.Have Google changed their algorithm or is this just random? http://img209.imageshack.us/img209/8643/incognito1.jpg http://img692.imageshack.us/img692/6382/incognito2jf.jpg Thanks, Dan

For large sites, best practices for pages hidden behind internal search?
If a website has 1M+ pages, with most of them being hidden behind an internal search, what's the best way to get pages included in an engine's index? Does a direct clickpath to those pages need to exist from the homepage or other major hub pages on the site? Is submitting an XML sitemap enough?
